I was perusing my local pawn shops and LGS, and technically, I bought a Ruger SR1911 Commander.
First of all, I'm not a Ruger fan when it comes to pistols with the MK I & II 22 being the exception, but at the last of the Pawn's I frequent, they had 2 SR1911's that weren't stupid expensive and against my better judgement I decided to try the trigger on the cheaper one
BECAUSE I've got parts on order for Caspian frame to complete my Nelson Custom 22 conversion.
The trigger in the Caspian sucks, the pull is about 10 pounds with 6ft of gravel before it clicks and finally breaks. Knowing that the 1911 isn't based on Legos like Glocks and AR15's, I can throw the parts in but I know its a little bit of magic and a work of art that requires fitting the hammer, sear, grip safety and springs to have a great trigger pull on a 1911. Knowing this, I'm going to risk about $110 in parts and try my hand at massaging it all together and see what happens ... but I decided to hedge my bet and see if I could find another 1911 with a decent trigger. The conversion was on my Kimber Stainless Gold Match, and it shot better than I'd hoped, groups are half the size of any other 22 I've got except my Colt 22 Cadet that's been worked over and has thousands of rounds through ...
Anyway, back to the Ruger SR1911 ... the first one the trigger was kinda "meh" and since there was only $50 difference between the two, I asked to try the other one. It's a Commander with the 4.25" barrel, was in nicer condition and came with 2 stainless mags but no box or manual ... and it has a surprisingly nice trigger, not as good as my Kimber SGM, but very nice.
Long story short, it came home with me. I pulled the slide off and installed the Nelson and realized I didn't have a 4" 1911 I've got a 3", several 5" a 6" & 7" ... so I really need the 4" and its yet to be determined if I've got the patience to create a sweet 1911 trigger!
I guess the worst that could happen is that my trigger sucks too, in which case I may (or may not) throw the complete slide on GunBroker, and maybe the Caspian frame too ... just to avoid temptation of trying again!
I just realized this post is stupid long, but I was bored ... and if I entertained you I'm happy!
