The NRA Institute for Legislative Action exposes John "The Manchurian Candidate" McCain:

http://www.nraila.org/Issues/Article...d=68&issue=098

So, since this thread has political overtones, you suggest I vote for Obama???? I think not..... If nothing else, I'd rather McCain be making the supreme court appointments for the next four years than either Hillary or Obama.

I don't want to get drawn into a political discussion here since it will get the thread locked. I think it's OK for us to reference a political figure or topic in a non-insulting way, but if we sit here and argue politics then this thread won't be around for long.

Think about it this way....

All you need is one complete rifle + a hot spare. Add in magazines and brass. You could make or buy everthing else you needed to keep it running until you stop ticking. Nobody's going to be able to outlaw gas tubes, springs, and bolt carrier assemblies...no matter how hard they try.

The last ban had more to do with the uppers than the lowers, i.e. flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, and retractable stocks.

Mags were limited to 10 rounds.

I'd make sure I was a member of the NRA. Then I would go to Staples and stock up on 8 1/2" x 11" tatical paper. Then sit my butt down and start cranking out letters to my congressmen. I have a friend in Washington who works for a local Representive. He swears up and down that a real hand written letter always goes to the congressmans dest unlike e-mails, faxes and angry phone calls. Since no one today takes the time to write a real letter anymore its a total red flag to congressmen when they actually get one. I also recomend that if the Congressman supports your action then you need to help support him. I always send $100.00 to any Congressman that a) responds to my letter, and B) votes my views.

Completely agree. From OP,

yes, I already talk with my local and federal representatives, give to campaigns, NRA, etc.

Question just is, if I'm already doing the other "right things," which hardware would you buy if you had some spare coin? I certainly can't buy $2k worth of paper, and I'm already an NRA Lifer.

Correct, but if you had a preban lower, then it was possible to add any kind of upper, stock, or mag your little heart desired.

The problem is that this time they're on to that "loophole" [sic], and it is possible that having a lower alone won't help much. I'm working on finishing a few builds for this very reason. Nothing I didn't plan on doing already, I'm just doing it sooner.

Is it just me or does anyone else think "President Obama" will be used in the near future of this country?

I am stocking up on all the stripped lowers I can get my hands on. All the other parts can be scrounged later, even years later. Documenting that each lower was a complete rifle before the new AWB? Easy to do.

Not if new legislation makes them controlled parts a la HR1022. I would not count on things being quite so easy if they manage to pass a second AWB.

Personally, I would buy the whole weapon and put it away...maybe a spare or two. Then it's/they're done and working out-of-the-box. Then make sure I had a MINIMUM of 1K rounds for each with selection of mags. If you have multiples and the need for parts arises, one can always be sacrificed.

Heh. How quickly stuff changes in a few months.

Oh, he might still win the nomination, and even the election. But he was on autopilot before, and he sure isn't now. It's a dogfight again.

And the recent posts highlight the problem with hedging our AWB bets: we just plain don't know what they'll try, if anything.

We assume that it will be like AWB 1.0, but they learned two things from AWB 1.0

1. Don't include a sunset provision

2. Don't base the ban upon things that can be changed, omitted, or otherwise swapped out.

Parts, or even complete firearms, are easier to manufacture than the mass production of ammunition.

Considering how little return the banners get for their investment these days I suspect any last "big push" legislation will involve ammo.

A ban on military and police calibers similar to what many countries have (such as Mexico and France) would really screw things up, wouldn't it?
