Can't tell you how often you "should" do it, but I can tell you I have never had a good reason to.
The only reason I would feel the need to is when something goes wrong that I feel I can fix, myself with my limited tools and experience.
Have I done it? Once. But only for curiosity. How often do you disassemble your car by removing the engine block, all seats, all panels and the exhaust system for a cleaning or just for fun? Me, I tend to drive it for fun. And clean the places I can reach.
