Help pick sling hardware for 10/22

Hi, sorry if this question is too specific for this forum
but I didn't want to join a 10/22 forum without tapping
into your expertise first.

Anyway, I just got a Ruger 10/22 Carbine and I'm looking
to put a 1.25" USGI sling on it. I believe the swivels I want
are here
but I want to be sure.

Has anyone done this to their 10/22? What setup did you use?
I'm basically trying to create a Liberty Training Rifle for the Appleseed
shoots this Spring.

Good, I'm trying to avoid using the ones that attach to the barrel band
as I've read that having a sling connected to it can cause accuracy
problems.
 
OK, I have the studs and swivels.

Now I'm hesitant to start drilling. I want to do this right the first time.
I've searched around on the Internet but haven't found a good step
by step article on how to do this properly.

Is there anything I can do to insure that my holes are drilled exactly
where they need to be, etc?

Has anyone here done this?

I know it sounds pretty straight forward but I figure I should probably
put as much effort into doing this perfect as I can so that I'm not unhappy
with it when I'm finished.
 
There isn't any concrete place the holes "need to be." :)

I'd mount the rear swivel about 3" from the butt, and the front anywhere you like near the barrel band. Do you have a drill press? Any way to firmly hold the stock while you drill? You want the holes drilled perpendicular to the surface so they will screw in square and flush.

It's easy. Don't worry. Take your time and have some confidence.
 
I put the stock in a vise and used a sharp object to get the hole started. I put masking tape over the stock to prevent any large chips in the finish. Make sure you are using the correct drill bit size (if I remember correctly it is 5/32). Try out your drill bit on a scrap piece of wood to make sure it is not too large before you drill your stock. Dont worry about counter sinking the stud, just use the white washer and you will be fine.

As for position, I go 2.5" from the butt plate and 2" from the barrel band. The locations are not set in stone.

Dont worry if you want to change it later, your LTR is not supposed to be pretty :).
 
I just sprung for a Hogue Overmold stock. It comes with the sling swivel studs already, and it got rid of the barrel band as well, so it solved 2 issues for me.
 
Well, I took my time with it and it turned out great. I'm glad I didn't
just whip out the drill and go to work on it right away.

Now, off to find a USGI sling for this bad boy.

Any pointers on picking a sling?

How about a good leather m1907 sling?
I've heard of Turner slings but I'm guessing they can get expensive.
From what I've read online, I should stay away from the ones with
brass hardware as they are prone to bending.
