Okay C&R license holders, I've got a little rant here. I've missed out on at least 3 nice C&R ELIGIBLE handguns in the last couple of weeks due to FFL's just plain refusing to sell to a C&R or making things WAY too complicated. What's up with this? I know some FFL01's will chime in with "it's our policy, like it or not", but what's the problem here? Seems like I sense immediate attitude (or shall I say, even MORE attitude) when I mention C&R. Very frustrating:fire:

What I have found is, dealers want to be 100% sure it IS C&R to sell it as such. There are lots of guns that could go either way, just depends on the date of manufacture. Other than that, I don't know.

I've talked to quite a few 01 FFLs who have no idea what a C&R FFL even is.
Never heard of it. So I assume they are protecting themselves, trying to play it safe.
Irritates me, too.:banghead:

You'll have better luck buying C&R handguns from distributors. There's a list of C&R dealers on THR somewhere (I tend to go with Classic Arms or AIM Surplus, myself). I'm assuming you've tried to buy them in person; many 01 FFLs aren't too up on regulations regarding the C&R license.

they have all the same books as -01 FFL's. They have the NFO...you should bluntly tell them to check it out for themselves..it is easy to do.

I've had the same experience where local FFL's don't know what a C&R is. I stick to internet retailers and auction sites myself.

Don't deal with Mo-Mo's. Lot's of nice guys will take your money. They're not being 'careful'--they're being bone-dog lazy. Especially if you can point them to the chapter and verse. I don't know that they are obliged to do a transfer to anyone, but to refuse outright in the face of evidence is out of line.

A type 3 FFL is subject to certain limits--so are all the rest of the FFL's.

I get a bit ticked because there ARE many c/r guns not listed as such when they could be in online listings.

There are C/R frustrations. It amazes me that I can have sks's, garands and carbines sent to my house----but I CAN'T buy my kid a single shot .22 Cricket except as a normal type 1 transfer.

But I know the C/R creedo---DON'T ask for a change in the rules--it will never be in our favor.

I just got my C&R and that must be irritating, I am going to a few gun shows this month and will see how it goes.

I don't know why you would miss out on buying them though, can't you just go through the normal process of buying a handgun as if you didn't have a C&R. Not as easy as handing over a copy of the C&R, but only takes 5 minutes (maybe it is different in MO, I don't know).

I've had a few "private citizens" that have balked at providing me their Driver's license or other means of ID that I need to put in my bound book. I just walk away from the deal. Sometimes it's really hard to do, but I don't want to screw with the regulations. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but the thought of "Sting" keeps popping up in my mind.

Heck, it's easier for them to accept a C&R. They just have to log the transfer (which they would have to do anyway), but don't need to deal with a yellow sheet or calling NICS.

I carry my copy of the C&R list with me in my backpack at shows.

I went to a gun show in Harrisburg, PA today and picked up a Mosin 91/30 with my C&R. I asked a bunch of dealers selling various Mosins & CZ82s, everyone said they would accept it. These guys were mostly dealing in C&R type guns though so maybe they were more familiar with it. This is the first time I have used mine at a gun show and it sure was convenient.

As an employee of a major retailer with an -01, I can say that I am prohibited by company policy from selling any firearm to anyone without a NICS check, minus LEO's with the proper paperwork. Dealers can make up ther own rules as to who they do and do not sell to, so long as it's within Fed rules. There's nothing telling them they have to sell something to you, even with an -03. Just shop online or somewhere else. Or fill out the NICS form. A paper trail is a paper trail. Whether they only log it out of their book or you fill out the 4473, it can still be tracked down eventually.

I dont give a hoot about going through a NICS check. No problem. What is a bummer is when you come upon a nice piece on the internet...In the CnR section...Listed as a CnR... and the dealer states that he doesnt accept a 3ffl for shipping purposes... There is nothing telling them that they have to accept your 3ffl, but when they dont IT DOES TELL YOU that you are dealing with folks who are just plain ignorant, or have foked up so many times in the past they are being overly cautious. Either way, there are too many shops out there WITHOUT their tail between their legs to screw around with a bunch of Barneys.

shipping

I have not had my FFL 03 for very long, but my main gripe is not with dealers, (I always ask before I attempt any transaction) , but with the USPS. IME they have the best service and price in shipping, but they do not allow us to use their service. It is the USPS, not the BATFE, that has this reg. , and it costs them money as well as us.

The only ones around here who won't take a C&R are the ones with stacks of M44s starting at $250. Not hard to figure out why they don't like C&Rs.

Buy from reputable !WHOLESALERS. Not full retail plus "mom & pop" retail dealers.

There are plenty online.

Pick up a copy of The Shotgun News. It's full of C&R guns.:D

80% Of it is that the 01's screw with the 03's for the same reason they hate the Internet, mail-order, Shotgun News/Gun List, and doing transfers.

20% Of it is paranoia, CYA, and ignorance.

Considering how many get dinged on 4473 errors, and how much business they lose to NICS delays, and improper denials, they ought to jump at every chance to do business with an 03 they can get.

To whomever asked why I don't just go through the standard procedure for acquiring a pistol: It's not worth the hassle. I have to drive 30 mi to the sheriff's office, apply for a permit, wait 7+days, pay $10 for the permit then take that to the dealer who receives the gun, and pay anywhere from $25-50 for the transfer.
Guess I should have just gotten my FFL01 so I could just bypass the "dealer attitude" around here!

$250? :what:

Yup Noxx, and Turk Mausers start at $180. This is why I got my C&R, I'll save money if I only buy one rifle with it.

Last show, there was one of these guys with a Vetterli for sale for $99. Picked it up and started to buy it, he insisted on the 4473 form and NICS check even though it was an antique. Pulled out a copy of my C&R to avoid the hassle and delay of a gunshow-weekend callin, he snaps at me to "get out of his face with that crap", even though I haven't said anything yet.

SgtRage: sounds like the typical attitude I hear from other C&R guys.
In my case, I usually don't receive that type of attitude "in person"
Refer to my post in "The faces of THR thread" and you'll see why:what:
Seriously, unless you were badgering the guy (which I'm sure you weren't), there's no need for such childlike behavior.
Oh well, guess I should just be happy for the ammo discounts!
