Hey C&R Guys--Little Rant!

Isn't the purpose of the 03 FFL to allow the holder of such to conduct aquisition of eligable firearms without having to burdon the NICS system and the seller with paperwork as well as to allow for shipment of such to your residence? If not then why the heck did you waste the 30 bucks and time applying... I've had my 03 for a while now... I have yet to use it to aquire a firearm as I havn't come across any appealing deals and cash is a bit tight at the moment... But treatment of this nature by an 01 would burn my noodle and I'd tell them to take a hike.... Same goes for places that will not honor my valid Michigan CCW in leau of the NICS for both handgun AND rifle purchases... I've handed them a printed copy of the Michigan law passed March 06 (I possess a post dec 05 CCW so it is valid for me) and I've had 3 scoff at it... oh well... I just shop somewhere else... but at least i get better pricing from the mail order places :)

Some dealers see C&R holders as competition. Some refuse to have anything to do with C&R holders. THat's when you ignore them. Find the shops that do deal with them, and there are quite a few that do. My best luck has been at gunshows as dealers will like not having to deal with paperwork. It's usually just confirming the ID, paying cash, getting reciept, turning over C&R and you are on your way.

It's completely up to the dealer whether or not they want to accept your C&R, it's also up to you where you spend your hard earned cash. If they won't take your C&R, take your business elsewhere. It's really that simple.

C&R

who do you think helped get rid of "kitchen table dealers"the FFL dealers thats who.same tretment there giving the C&R holders.they have not got the brains to realize the more sales the lower the price because of production costs.the factories did the same with surplus military arms.maybe a list of these people would shake them up.when I had my FFL we made 15% today its 200%.check the wholesale price and retail price.yes $69 m91 for $225.:cuss::banghead:

I'll bet the same FFL dealers who won't honor C&R licenses are the first ones to scream if the government tries to levy a tax or impose any restrictions which affect them. Not only does it add a minimum of $40 to any purchase to have to go through a standard "phone call" check via an FFL in my area, but we're also restricted to one purchase a week. With my C&R I can buy 50 guns a week if I want to. But if I buy one C&R gun from a dealer who insists I use a "real" FFL, I have to wait a week to buy another one.

So guess what? If it comes down to "wasting" a week by buying just one gun that week, I'll take that opportunity to buy one that's not on the C&R list which I may have been coveting. I will NOT be buying a C&R gun from someone who won't honor my license. There are plenty more to choose from if I want a C&R gun. I'll just wait til one pops up being sold by someone who doesn't insist on levying another "tax" on me.

I am an FFL, and I accept C&R licenses. I think the reason that a lot of dealers don't is that they will not take the time to verify that the gun is actually C&R eligible. Another reason is that we can not verify a type 03 license with the FFL EZcheck system, you actually have to call the ATF to make sure the license is valid.

TEDDY- please tell me more about how I can make 200% profit margins!!! Seriously, most guns are 10-15%.

The issues I've run into when trying to buy on my C&R comes down to ignorance on the part of the 01 dealers I was trying to buy from. I had the owner of a pawn shop once tell me my C&R was not 'real'... Really? ;)

I've bought from a few private parties here on THR and other places. Even one of the big gun shops in OKC while I still lived there was happy to accept my C&R.

Basically my stance is if you are too lazy to understand what a C&R is and do not want to sell to me under my LICENSE, ok. Fine. My money will go elsewhere.

In the end, the seller loses by ignoring us C&R holders.

Wow this thread is 2 1/2 months shy of five years.

Anyway, yes I had a FFL or two refuse to accept my C & R. They have a right to refuse to accept it and they have a right to refuse sales to anyone if they want. That is the way it is, even though I don't think it is right. However there are other FFL's and companies who will gladly accept it and look forward to doing business with you.

On my most recent C&R buy the dealer refused to honor my FFL03.
However, seeing as how what I was buying was at about 1/2 the value it should have been, I swallowed my pride and went through with the 4473 and associated paperwork.....:p

In some cases it is hard to determine whether a gun qualifies, such as a model that was made in the 50s and for decades afterwards, and isn't marked with a date code or listed in the very incomplete C&R lists published by the ATF. But all guns that are 50 years old or older are automatically C&R eligible, which includes all those old 7.65 bringbacks as well as pre-war Colts and other revolvers. So 80% of the C&R guns are easily identifiable by anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of gun history.

I might still buy a C&R gun with the added hassle and expense of a dealer transfer, but I'll pay less for it to compensate. For instance, there's a C&R gun that has a buy it now price I'd happily pay if I could get it without the extra fee. That extra fee makes it less attractive than competing guns though. I still might bid on it, but I'll top out at $40 less than the buy it now price I would have paid.

BTW, the last time I bought a non-C&R gun I drove 12 miles to get it, only to find out that PA's NICS was out of commission all afternoon. Which meant a second trip to get the gun. A total drive of 50 miles and an FFL fee on top of it. Which was a much bigger PITA than having my mailman ring my doorbell to get my signature and hand me my delivery, for free.

And on a different note, since as usual someone had to be "astonished" that a years old thread was resurrected, who decided that threads about subjects that are still current and topical have an expiration date on them? Unless it's a thread about a question that's already been answered, who cares how old it is? Do you really check the dates on every post you read? If you hadn't remarked on the age of the thread, do you think anyone reading the posts would suddenly be brought up short by the jump in the dateline? I mean, really.

Moderators here seem to close old threads that are resurrected. Surprised to see this still open.

but with the USPS. IME they have the best service and price in shipping, but they do not allow us to use their service. It is the USPS, not the BATFE, that has this reg. , and it costs them money as well as us.

Having used my C&R to buy (and yeah, I've found other C&R are easier to deal with)
I've used mine in face to face

my favorite was that I had my original for some reason (I forget) and I'm trying to make a copy of it, well the boss man said OK, it's a transfer between FFL, and I don't have to mess around on the phone....

Counter Monkey throws a fit cause it ain't signed AND I want to make a copy of it, they need the original... luckily boss man came back out before I walked.

Hey, if they don't want my businesses, then I'll take it somewhere else. The only place I'll stay and still buy is my friendly LGS or if it is a superb deal. Anywhere else I'll walk.

And what sucks even MORE is that, if you cave in and buy a gun from an 01 who refuses to take your C&R and insists that you do a 4473, you STILL have to put it in your bound book, even though you were denied the use of your 03 license.

To whomever asked why I don't just go through the standard procedure for acquiring a pistol: It's not worth the hassle. I have to drive 30 mi to the sheriff's office, apply for a permit, wait 7+days, pay $10 for the permit then take that to the dealer who receives the gun, and pay anywhere from $25-50 for the transfer.
Guess I should have just gotten my FFL01 so I could just bypass the "dealer attitude" around here!
That stinks!

Bought a gun not long ago on a whim. Had 15 minute to kill before work and decided to walk in and browse.

Walked out with a Ruger Vaquero before my 15 mins were up

Some 01's are miffed because us guys with the 03 get the same discounts they do at Midway and Brownells, to name a couple. They won't sell to us because they like acting like little kids. No loss to me, I'll just go somewhere else and they'll lose my business and any business that I MIGHT have sent their way after my purchase. Might not be much, but in these days a few bucks a week from word-of-mouth advertising helps out.
