Hi-Point Carbine Quality?

I have a 995 in an ATI stock with a cheap red dot. It is boringly accurate, reliable(other than a bad magazine) , short and handy. That being said, I haven't shot mine in over 2 years. With the high prices of 9mm, it's cheaper to shoot 5.56. I'd like to get the wife shooting it so it could be her home defense gun. She doesn't really like pistols.

I bought one cheap about 9-10 years ago, or so. Mine always functioned, at least for about 500 rounds. Pulled it out of the gun closet after a short break a couple of years ago. At that time I found that you can hear a click when you pull the trigger, but there's no dimple on the primer, and no firing.

The thing worked okay until that point, and I haven't taken the time to figure out what the problem is with mine. With that said, it sure has some cheap-n-ugly construction to it, and they cut every possible corner to make this thing at the price they sell it for. I doubt I'd ever buy another Hi-point myself. I guess they work if you just really need to have some kind of gun, and can't afford something better. I'm not a gun snob, but I tend to demand at least a little quality out of my guns!

Personally, I'd save your $200 and buy something else. The Hi-points are okay, but they're still a bottom of the barrel gun. I think you'd be better off buying a used milsurp Mosin or Mauser for that price!

In fairness to the Hi-point, until it stopped working at the approx 500 round range, it was an accurate little gun (when the sight's windage was cranked hard left) and it didn't ever malfunction while shooting.

EDITED TO ADD: Until I saw this thread, I didn't know that Hi-point actually had anything in the way of customer service. I'll probably try sending my gun in to see what they say sometime, and I'll post my opinion of their service after I do. Of course, I'm not real keen on the idea of spending a bunch of money to ship a $100 gun across the country...

coloradokevin,

Sounds like you have some bad feelings about the gun.

Give them a call and see what they will do for you. If you have that bad of feelings about it give me a pm and I might buy it from you.

I think they are really good guns for the money. They shoot very well and you can change the looks of them if you like.

I've done a lot of online research about this and am on a waiting list for a 995. One of the deciding factors was the level of customer support that is evident whenever you read a thread about Hi Point firearms. If yours stopped working and you haven't contacted them you're missing something.

I have a 995, bought it over 3 years ago for $180. Took it hiking, horseback riding and put well over 5000 rounds through and for the pricetag it's held up pretty good. It's not a 1000 dollar 9mm carbine, however I have managed to drop it off a 20ft cliffline into rocks and have pitched it on a rock/gravel road galloping on a horse, and the list goes on, and it still fires. Can ya really ask for more at $200?

Mind you the stock is now held together by duct tape and the front sight shroud is broken off, But it still fires every round. Would any other carbine hold up any better?

I picked up a 995 last week at a pawn shop because the owner was grumbling that he had no idea why he bought it. Paid a whopping $120.00 with three mags for it, first thoughts were ok its trading material, or just might give it to my grandson. Second thought and talking with several others that own these, its going to stay right here. Yes its ugly as sin, one of those that at first glance you say Nope, Never, Not for me but so far its a great little carbine, just got to decide which sight/scope or whatever to put on it. I might even go looking for a second one now for the grandson.

I bought one from someone desperate to sell it about 3 years ago. There were problems with it due to misuse. I cleaned it and took care of the problems. I temporarily replaced the stock bolt with something that worked. It fired accurately. Due to this thread I'll be sending it back to Hi-Point for repair as I'd forgotten to do so.
