What is the general consensus on the Hi-Point brand of pistols? Is that compensator integral or can it be removed and shot without it? Finally, what's with the side ejection?

Thanks, it's been a while since I've been here (been at AR15.com). Good to be back:D .

i can see noe reason what so ever why anybody would want to buy one. you can get a makarov for the same price. besides, hi points are so damn fugly

Well you could always shell out the $150 or so and try one. I don't see it as an expensive enough purchase to worry about bieng ripped off. If it shoots at least 95% of the time it would probably be worth it in my opinion. Just don't be unrealistic in your expectations and you won't be too disapointed if it doesn't perform well. Besides if you don't like it, there is always a thug on the streets who needs a "gat" for poppin caps

I've put 1200 rounds through mine, no problems really. (Doesn't like Blazer much) I hear they have top-notch support if you need it. I believe the comp can be taken off. I am happy with mine, it was cheap and has been reliable.

However, if I could have gotten a Makarov for the same price I would have - but I couldn't.

So...any particular reason WHY it sucks? Reliability maybe?

I don't care if it's fugly, it's just a tool. Cosmetics isn't much of my concern, though I love the look of custom 1911s:D .

Because there are far better and more reliable pistols out there for that price than the Hi-Point

Makarov and Star are a couple that come to mind.

I have a 45. Have never had any trouble out of it. It fires every time I pull the trigger, never jammed, and is decently accurate. For someone on a budget that wants a 45, IMO theres nothing wrong with them other than being fugly. I do have a Star, 2 maks, 2 cz 52s, 2 cz 70s, and a host of other pistols. I like them all.

Reader's Digest version.

I know where you can get a free one!! Yes, you heard right!! A FREE HIGH POINT!!!

All you have to do is dig it up!!!!

It's buried about 4' under the ground, somewhere in the Sonoran desert!!! I'll even give you a hint as to where it is!! Ready?? Got yer pencil and paper?? Are yew up with me???

IT'S ON THE ARIZONA SIDE OF THE BORDER!!!!!

I'm tired of telling the story. Suffice it to say, that I'm a FORMER Hi-Point owner that could not bear the thought of inflicting that POS on another human being!!!

Sooooo, get yer metal detector warmed up, your snake proof boots on and good hunting!! Oh, and make sure to bring plenty of water. It gets mighty hot out here this time of year!!!

Purchased the offending POS in the early nineties for approx $100.
It would not get through a mag without jamming. Failure to reliably feed, as I recall. This was with BOTH factory supplied mags!! There was also more than one failure to fire as well!! I tried to return it to the place of purchase to no avail!! No refund. No store credit. No exchanges. Nada!!
A cost to benefit anaylsis revealed that it was not worth sending it back to the factory. So, it got buried!!

I was wondering where TropicalZ was also???

He has usually chimed in by now with something to the effect of:

HiPoints RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLEEE!!!!!

Okay sigma 40ve has a valid point about the .45. One would be hard-pressed to get any other .45 for that price. So if a person really wanted a .45 and was on a tight budget, that might justify buying a Hi-Point.
But with any smaller caliber, the argument about getting a Makarov or Star for the same price is valid.

as far as eliabilty, i heard the new hi- points are very reliable (their carbine is said to out perform the pc9) . still would't buy one though for reasons already mentioned.

I stopped coming here after my last Hi-Point thread caused such an uproar that I was forbidden from accessing my own thread (or even seeing it for that matter)and decided it wasnt worth it anymore.I didnt break the rules!!!!!!! When your thread is removed from the archives its clear youve overstayed your welcome.Theres a lot of good forums.Im out there on the web somewhere.;)

i have the hi point 45.i have had it for 6 years, and about 5000 rds.had maybe 2 or 3 failure too feed problems{ammo related}.
a friend of mine has the 9 mm, bought it used for $60.the slide broke,he sent it back to hi point.they sent him a brand new gun!
they have one off the best warranty programs.
for a cheap truck gun or range plinker it can't be beat.
just my 2 cents.

Tropical, it's good to know you're okay. Sorry to hear you got a sour deal, I never knew you to be anything but polite in your arguements, but some of the anti- Hi-Point folks can be down right rabid, especially those who have never owned one. Me, I've never owned one, and probably never will unless they come out with a .45 carbine (Oh please oh please oh please), but I know several people who have owned them and they really haven't had any problems with them. True, they ain't the purtiest girl at the dance, but if they work, looks is secondary.

No experince with their pistols

but I do have a carbine and it was the best $120 I ever spent on a firearm. If they make a .45 carbine I will buy another.

The carbine I have has been entirely reliable for the two years I've owned it. But one has to develop a "thick skin" to endure the ribbing at the range. Every time I pull it out I get comments about the "ape gun" or "sure is ugly." I've tried to let it answer those questions with its reliablity and excellent accuracy. My son can regularly hit a 10" steel plate at 110 yards. There is one guy at the range who has a .45 pistol and he tells everyone that it is very reliable and accurate. WTM

I've had the 9mm compact for a couple of years now, and never had a problem with it. If it ever does wear out, I'll send it back and get a new one for free. A lot of people with more expensive guns can't say the same thing.

However, it does take a while to get used to the looks.
