Hi-Points?

To answer one of your questions: The compensator comes off with a small allen wrench that is supplied with the gun when bought new. You can shoot without it if you wish.

As far as comments on Hi-Points go, my C-9 Comp works fine. No jams ever, good shot groupings, virtually no recoil. It does have some weight, but it's no heavier than lots of revolvers.

As far as ugly goes, it's all in the eye of the beholder. I personally don't see the non-compensator models as any uglier than Glocks. While I did think the compensator assembly was ugly, $105 for a new C-9 Comp was too good a deal to walk away from. I wanted an inexpensive dependable travel gun that I didn't care it it got some marks on it. They're a Chevy, not a Cadillac.

The low cost did alarm me, but after talking to numerous owners and sellers of the new models, thay all talked nice about them. Every seller I talked with said they had never had one returned. Lifetime warranty extends to any owner, not just the first one. That indicates some confidence by the manufacturer. Based on these forums, my guess is that there were some quality issues in the past that seem to have been taken care of now. Hyundai sound familiar? I also notice that most of the bad comments on them comes from people that don't own them or have even ever used one. Follow the leader heard mentality? There's bad forums comments on every gun out there.

Even the press is starting to talk nice about Hi-Points in terms of value for the money - reference Gun Tests (9mm carbine review), GWLE (carbine & 380 review), Combat Handguns (45 review) and one other recent one (Guns & Ammo maybe?)

Well up until now I put Hi-points on about the same level as Jennings, Brycos, and Lorcins. Or perhaps half a step above. Some of what I've read on this thread and elsewhere has caused me to question this judgement. I still wouldn't buy one personally, because they are crude looking ugly, and Glock isn't much of a standard of beauty. :D

But function is far more important than form. Even with everything I've read, all told the views I've read of Hi-points could best be described as "mixed".

On the other hand, for about the same money as a new Hi-point, I can buy a good-condition Makarov, FEG, CZ-52, Star BM, or any other of a large number of Eastern Bloc or European military surplus pistols that have an almost spotless record of reliability and longevity. So I still can't see the justification for taking a chance on a gun of questionable quality and longevity. If you got a good Hi-Point, congratulations and enjoy it. Other people seem to have gotten bad ones. I realize that there are good and bad examples of every pistol or any other complex piece of machinery ever made. I just do my research and try to make an accurate overall impression based on what I learn.

oh no. While HiPoints are in the same price category as the jennings and brycos, they are NOT in the same reliability and longevity category.

A hipoint is a viable low cost home protection, or plinking option for those who cannot afford costlier firearms.

Jennings and Brycos will never be viable options for either of those choices.

Just a side question

Does anyone know if the carbines are made from the same recievers as the pistols? If they would make a .45 Carbine, I'd buy it no matter how ugly it was.

My 2 cents. I wanted to try one, and I bought the compact 9mm. Several thousands of rounds later I consider it a reliable gun. I've had 2 ftf's in close to 3000 rds and have only cleaned it three times. The owners manual states to clean it every 1500 rds. A roll pin holds the brick (range nickname) together, and is kinda tough to get out. I came across a 45 model for 75 bucks and snatched it up. 1200 rds later it has been flawless. Its on the night stand. The H&k P7 and the Sig 220 are in the safe, couldn't bare the thought of someone breaking in and finding one of those.

Anyway,

Ugly? YES. Heavy? YES. But Hi point backs these guns 100%. A statement in itself.

I own, or have owned H&K, SIG, Browning, just to name a few. For no more than I have in these two guns, I would recommend them to someone who has a interest in them, or maybe just can't afford to purchase a high dollar gun. As you can see they are not for everyone.

That being said, is my two cents. To each his own.:D

ya know , a few years ago my dad was goin through some hard times (money wise). and he had to sell alot of his firearms (all his pistols and alot of his rifles and shotguns.) he kept his 30-30 levergun and his rem 870 and that was all. he hated not having a handgun .so he picked up a hi-point .45 this was a few years ago and you know what ? that nasty lookin gun has been stone reliable so much he picked up one in 9mm and .380, yeah their really ugly but his work and thats what counts.

I know I would rather

own a new American made cheap but reliable with a full lifetime warranty handgun, no matter how ugly it is, over a surplus com-bloc gun, anyday.

Just me view. Buy American, Support American jobs. Get a warranty.

I don't care if it's fugly, it's just a tool. Cosmetics isn't much of my concern,

I understand that viewpoint, but Hi-Points are so outrageously ugly they could burn your eyes ;)

Cmon now, i understand your reasoning..but makarovs are mighty hard to pass up sometimes:D

I guess my question is why are they (especially the carbine) so ugly? For me it is the gratuitious curves that don't go together. Heck, just square it off/smooth it out, whatever. I keep hearing about the great reliability on the carbines. Well, if you can do that, you can make it look less like the previously mentioned "Planet of the Apes" gun.

Has anyone noticed that most of the people that talk all of the trash about the Hi-pointsHAVE NEVER OWNED ONE!!!!!!! :fire: :banghead: Hi-points are good guns. I do not care what anyone says. I have had 2 of them with NO, I repeat NOOOOO problems!!!!!!! Customer service is great. The people who have owned one and had problems and now call them "Junk" :barf: have never took the time to see what the problem was, which is usually something EXTREMELY simple. Send it back to MKS supply/Hi-point and they will send you all new stuff!!! They are economical, extremely accurate and reliable guns. period.

Pheeewww, now thats off my chest!!! :)

I bought a .45 after hearing a ton of stuff here (Mostly bad )
I got a lot of other pistols but I got to say I am not disappointed
with the Hi-point . Cheaply made but it does its job !

my experience

with the 9mm carbine has been excellent. Spent $100 and got the used blue carbine, two mags, and a case. Have about 500rds thru it and only one FTF, due to ammo most definitely.

I called HIPOINT (and got a human after 2 rings) and just talked with the guy. I was desperately hoping they were going to make a folding stock for the carbine ( I would pay another $50 for one), but he said there are no plans for it at this time. I asked about the 45 carbine, he said it is still in the works. May be awhile. I asked about hicap mags for the carbine and he said they are getting bids from two mag manufacturers, but it may be another 6mos before we see any on store shelves. Seems everyone is wanting to produce hicaps since the ban died (yeah). That was my news.

Just wanted to pass it on. I will buy the 45 carbine when it comes out. I would buy a 45 or 9mm pistol if I could get one used for around $75, but they are kinda scarce the places I go around here. Just see new ones. I guess the folks who buy them new, just hang on to them (or hide them from public view in shame). I will say they dont hit me as being a graceful or pretty weapon, but I dont think the bad guy looking down the wrong end of the barrel will ever say, "hey, is that a hipoint? do they really work?"......
