High-end .22LR rifles

Not an extreme high-end rifle, but an excellent find of a Model 69A Winchester. I was pleased to find it for $220 at Kittery Trading Post, about 15 years ago. Lately, I 've seen them for twice the price that I paid. When a kid, I lusted after these when I visited gunshops and couldn't afford them.

I had a 69A and a 72A (the tube-fed version) about 20 years back. I wanted a 75 sporter to go along with the 69 and 72, but those were rather hard to find back then. I lost the 69 and 72 in the Big D (and I don't mean Dallas) some years ago and never did get a 75 sporter (if you have one, post some pics!). These days, I can buy Kimbers, 52 sporter reproductions, or Anschutz rifles for what people are asking for 75 sporters, and, while the 75 is a fine gun, it is not IMO the equal of the newer rifles listed.

That Winchester 69 really gets me going. I have a soft spot for Mossberg 22 rifles. This is a 146 that still shoots great. The wood is not stained, they used real walnut even on low cost rifles like this back in its day.

I don't have a 72, but shot my B.I.L.'s before he passed. I like the 69 better and have a single shot adapter for it as well as a 5-shot magazine.

I wish I still had the 69A and 72A---I can't buy one of them now for what both of them cost me back then. They were fine little rifles. Enjoy yours!

This may be getting too far off the subject of high grade .22's but just for fun this duo might be called Li'l Bro and Big Bro: An '03 Springfield .30 Cal. and M2 Springfield .22 Cal RF. with matching sights (Lyman 48) and other similar features. Indoor practice with the .22 is great training for the big caliber, which is exactly what it was made for, and doing the rapid fire stages (standing to sitting, standing to prone.) is a hoot. Try it. My first .22 RF rifle was a Remington 510 Target master. Not a high end gun but that rifle shot where it was pointed and was as accurate as many other Target grade guns.

My Anschutz was a sportier that gave great service - If I recall it was an early M64 ? . One other .22RF rifle I owned was a heavy barrel target model made by Mossberg. It shot very well for a lower cost gun.

Well here she is as promised! It's a valmet M45 that finally came in today. The original stock was missing the butt end attachments and had also be modified into a free rifle style with repairs. But, i found the stock with wooden palm rest thats installed and the rear sight on ebay. A collector had them both for sale and had perfect timing since i had just bought my rifle that lacked alot. So, now its in firing condition again and HEAVY! I initially had the thought of having it d&t for a scope before finding this stock and sight. What do you guys think, should I put a scope on or leave it as is? Also thought about having an all steel mount made that would slip into the rear sight groove so it would be easily removed with no alterations.

Very nice Valmet! A rare and most unusual rifle in this country. I like the idea of using a scope mount that would keep the rifle as original as possible. There are just not that many of those around anymore. Congratulations on your most recent acquisition!

Check with BKL. I believe they make a mount like the one you're talking about. Kinda like this:
