I'm not sure if FMJ ammo goes through the same quality specifications as premium defense ammo during manufacture. I've got some old IMI 9mm FMJ ammo that is very consistent in velocities, the primers have a purple sealant and it appears to be quality stuff but I can't get anymore. I'm looking for high quality 9mm FMJ ammo that I can use for defense.

Thanks.

I use M882 (9mm NATO) surplus as my high quality 9mm FMJ ammunition. It's a reasonably warm 124 grain load. Theory being, if it's good enough for the military, it's good enough for me.

It's hard to find a steady supply of this stuff. :(

Ammoman has Geco 9mm ball in stock and advertises USGI "more coming in soon."

Why do you want FMJ for defense?
Most cops and citizens prefer hollowpoints.

I'd look at fiocchi 115-124gr . Its pretty hot.
RE: fmj vs. hp, hp's rarely expand in human issues at hadngun velocities. The only reason to get hp's is that most +p+ ammo is jhp, as well as some of the better 147 gr loads.
I'd also take a look at the new fiocchi loads aim surplus got in. They have a 150 (?) gr subsonic load that looks interesting.

Well, without the drag of an expanding bullet and the larger frontal area it brings bullet mass becomes less important and velocity more so. Since you know you're going to get consistant penetration the best way to get a larger wound channel is higher velocity.

If I were to go with a non-hollowpoint I'd probably opt for the MagTech 95 gr SP. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=815285

or if it has to be FMJ go with something with a meplat for better wounding, which pretty much means a 147 gr bullet like the Winchester. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=512377

I'd actually avoid military ammo for defense unless your shooting from a carbine since they're designed with harder primers for full auto firearms.

I run into Remington UMC (yellow box) 115gr. FMJ cheaply fairly often. 1135 fps w/329 ft/lbs muzzle energy. By comparison, their +p 124 gr. Golden Sabre JHP does 1180 fps w/384 ft/lbs energy.
