I'm going to take a hog or two between Saturday and Tuesday. I have a few options and would like opinions on each or which you would choose.

I've got a 20" marlin lever in 44mag., a 3" 629, a 3" 686+, a 6" 686+ and a 6.5" 610. Ammo will be G-A 240 gr. gold dot for 44mag., DT 158 gold dot for 357mag. and DT 180 gold dot for 10mm. I've used gold dots on hog before and they have worked which is why I'm going with them again.

I'm guessing the 3" 686+ won't get many votes since it's the least powerful. I shoot it very well and it's nice to pack though. Another thought was to take the Marlin and a revolver. That way I won't have to pass on a longer shot should it present itself. I've hunted this property before though and a 6" revolver has been enough. My top choices are the 629 and 610.

Thanks for your thoughts. In the end, I'll take what I want but I'm excited and want some input from guys with more experience.

I would opt for the .44 mag lever gun with a 3" 629 as back up.

Lever guns are pretty easy to carry and handy in tight places. It will also bump the velocity up a good bit and make hitting easier.

+1 on the Marlin and the 629.

I have hunted hogs with a Winchester 94 in 44 mag and it always does a great job. Puts 'em down every time. The 629 makes a great backup and can become the primary if you get an opportunity for a close shot.

.44 mag, pistol or rifle, given your choices. Hogs are generally close as they're hunted in cover most places, at least around here. .30-30, .44, .308, really anything you'd shoot a deer with will work, but just use a heavy penetrating bullet for whatever caliber. A BIG hog takes a penetrating bullet. 240 and up soft point or SWC will work in .44.

+1 on the levergun.

But speaking of this, what do you think guys - is this pretty much the ultimate hog gun or what? :D

SMLE "No. 6" Jungle Carbine, which is really an Ishapore No. 2A in .308/7.62 nato, shortened and made to look like a No. 5 JC. It's got the "pig-sticker" on the front, in case the little devils charge you, and 12 rounds of .308 win with a forward-mounted scout scope.

Well as with any game hunting take what you shoot best . I wont presume to make other statements other than if you go pistol primairy then be able to " dot the i " at the ranges you will likely see . a pig aint hard to kill , but it is easy to pixx off if you miss and a tough sob then .

SMLE? Nah, I'll take my Hakim and bayonet, of course, the bayonet. Can't hunt hogs without a pike, ya know. The thing is 25 feet long, 400 lbs, and fires 10 8x57s fast as I can dump 'em. I haven't gotten an MG38 30 round mag, yet, for it. I'd take a picture of it, but I don't have a wide angle lens.
