When it comes to using shotguns for home defense I often read about that especially for the longer barrels that a home intruder could grab the barrel/shotgun away from you. Instead of him using it on you, could you just shoot the home intruder right when he puts his hand on the barrel or makes an attempt to grab it? Or would that not justifiable because he is not actually an "armed" threat yet?

If your fighting for a gun, you are justified in shooting someone who broker or got in your house period. :)

In most states if he's already in your house(and especially if he's grabbing your gun as Srigs pointed out) you can defend yourself with that gun.

You'd have to be a hard mother to grab for the barrel of a shotgun, but yeah I suppose it would be easier to grab a 30" barrel than a 20" one. So go get yourself a nice Mossberg Cruiser ;)

Don't ever let a threat that causes you to point a firearm at them get within 6 ft. of you without shooting them.

If they are that close and you aren't justified to shoot, you shouldn't have the gun out. Rifle disarms are real easy. Taking out a pistol holder ain't real hard either if you are within 6 ft of them. Heck, they don't need to know what they are doing, just charge you like a crazy person swingin'.

If you encounter a threat that grabs your barrel while clearing the house, muzzle punch 'em in the chest or throat -or- forget the gun and gouge his eye out or slam your forearm into his throat. Then shoot him.

"The law" is a vast and mysterious thing, subject to all the whims and vagaries of mortal man. What's legal in one jurisdiction isn't in another. If it's legalities you are concerned about, learn the law and the practice IN YOUR JURISDICTION. Ask your DA or prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney or someone genuinely in a position to know the law in your jurisdiction.

Keyboard/gunshop lawyers don't count...
