Home Defense Shotguns....Let's See them

There are two shotguns with a rail on each. They recieve a rather cheap reflex sight with a laser beam emitter to assist in targeting at night. There is a short rail up front where a very big light can be placed.

Other than that they are just bone stock. My gun happens to like salt water environment and the other needs TLC becaue it's a bit picky with salt water. No biggie.

After thinking a bit of the concept of wanting to show photos I dont have a problem with it, only that the serial numbers are not on there LOL.

Cheers.

Now that is cool.

I did not make my remarks about the type of guns he wanted to see, I made my remarks about how he was asking them to be presented regarding use for home defense.

I don't see the problem, personally. *shrugs*

those saigas look awesome
short sights though

Eventually I am going to pistol grip mine, add a front site post on the barrel and hopefully end up with something like this...

By some of these people's definitions, I don't really HAVE an 'HD shotgun' that does nothing but stay loaded between the nightstand and the side of the bed ready to eliminate threats to my person and property.

I do have a Mossberg 500 breacher, that I've done things such as put an AR-15 grip and side-folding ACE SOCOM stock (high tube), and a receiver rail that often has an Eotech, or some other red dot on it...

But I put that together for competition. Someone had told me about a door breach being planned on the next course. It was only after I set that shotgun up that I found out that the door to be 'breached' had a square cut out where the lock would be, and cheap plywood planks practically just stapled over it. Oh well, I kinda like the look of that breacher anyway, and it turned out to be a lot quicker of a shotgun to use than the 870 I used previously.

THAT shotgun, whenever it's not on the range or in competition, just happens to also be left by the bed with a loaded magazine.

I don't know, I guess I've watched too much Good Eats on food network. 'Tools must multitask!'

Come on in, rack that bad boy, and I own you

Damn, but someone talks tough! Love the pseudo gangster lingo. That always sends a shiver up my leg.

Million rounds, huh?

How many of those were you standing in a pitch black room and the shotgun fired at you? You're going to hose a few rounds at the sound, huh?

The sound of a shotgun means two things in a situation like that; #1, the other guy isn't unarmed and he isn't going to be polite to you and there's a good chance that you'll be dead in the next five seconds....#2, that, chances are, he can see you and you're already in his sights. You hear the sound but you can't pick the target out instantly and you can't fire on what you can't see.

I believe the pseudos would phrase that as *YOU* are owned.

You know, for the life of me, I can't figure out how the sound of a shotgun being racked would tell you how many perps there are in the room. I guess if each had a shotty and they all took turns chambering rounds one after the other. Never seen that situation before.

It is awfully hard to tell who is the intruder and who is an innocent if you can't see your potential target.

Well said and to the point. This is exactly why I strongly support the use of a weapon mounted white light system. Some may consider this "tackycool" or some such nonsense, but if these individuals have ever tried bearing a flashlight while manipulating a shotgun (in low light or complete darkness), Im sure this particular accessory may likely be deemed as quite useful.

Keep in mind, Im not saying a weapon mounted light is critical (I have yet to install one on my Mossberg 590), but if you have one on your shotgun....kudos!

To SM regarding "racking the shotguns forend" and giving away position/not being a deterrent to those who are "in the know."

I agree that relying on the sound of the "clack-clack" of the shotgun is not a good tactic. In fact, I dont really see it as a tactic at all. However, if someone hears me "preparing" my shotgun (as I dont keep a round in the chamber, but rather "cruiser ready"), well...so be it. If this individual hears me racking the slide of my .45 ACP in preparation to a potentially violent encounter...so be it. At least this person, or persons, will know Im armed and more than likely am prepared to meet force with force if necessary. In my case at least, the "tell tale" sounds of armament is due to necessity rather than bravado. These "sounds," to law enforcement, would probably incite the need for "backup" and require tactical thinking/adjustment. For the BG who has just broken into your home, these "sounds" just may incite thoughts such as "is getting shot at/potentialy killed really worth what Im wanting to do?" For instance, I cant tell you how many times Ive seen video of multiple, gun weilding "would be" assailants scattering like leaves in the wind once shots are fired at them. I suspect the "typical" HD encounter would be roughly the same.

Barring an individual motivated by some personal need to see you dead, Im sure that most individuals are not willing to risk death in order to steal your goods. Also, chances are, these individuals havent spent any kind of time familiarizing themselves with weapons or tactics well enough to know whats what; certainly not enough to stick around when fired upon. Besides, when mere seconds are separating you from a violent encounter, "tactics," "position," and/or "giving away position" may very well go right out the window. At that point, its all about will, weapon familiarity, action/reaction and improvisation/adaptation ability....all of this taking place within mere seconds.

Now, when considering those violent individuals who proceed to meet law enforcement intervention with guns blazing...well, in this case, the stakes/outcome are a bit different. Here, its mainly about resist/escape and/or kill vs. spending the next few decades or more in prison. Here, the "payoff" very well may justify the need for violence (in the mind of the criminal). In the case of home invasion, to risk death for mere worldly goods (unless we are talking about life-altering sums of cash)...the risk/reward just doesnt seem to be worth the taking. But, then again, Im not of the criminal persuasion. Thus, these thoughts are merely based on "rational" thought. If Im way off base here...so be it.

I guess this could be used for home defense. I currently use it at work. Winchester Defender with a pair of .22s

This is Mine.

One of the reasons for starting this post was to get ideas on what might work for me. I had already purchased my Mossberg 500 Persuader/Cruiser 8 shot 12 gauge with 20 " barrel. Trying to decide what, if anything, I should consider adding to it. I am sure it will serve its intended purpose if called upon to do so, just as it is. What add-ons will actually enhance my odds of coming out on top in a middle of the night Home defense senario?

I would consider the following: Either a Meprolight tritium sight or some type of weapon mounted light...possibly both. I have a Meprolight sight (front bead) on my Mossberg 590. I would already have a light mounted to it, but am having a difficult time resolving a decent solution regarding this issue (thanks to the fact that I have insisted on using a heavy walled barrel).

Other than finding a way to store additional ammo on the gun (probably not necessary if you already have a mag tube with decent capacity), dealing with area illumination, or in the very least sight illumination, would be of primary concern when it comes to HD versatility, IMHO.

Re: Racking Slides

My comments were intended for those new to shotguns, and the serious use of shotguns.

New folks cycle in, and often times so want to be part of the firearm community, they parrot what is read, or heard elsewhere,to have a sense of belonging.

Personally, responsible firearm ownership means correcting some "ideas" and getting these new folks on the correct path.

I do not want anyone getting hurt,or worse. While we hope none of us ever have to deal with serious, we especially do not want new folks, to be armed with incorrect ideas.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with saying " I do not know", I do it all the time.
Nor is there is anything wrong in asking someone to share correct ideas, I do this all the time as well.

Steve, I really need to buy you a slice of pie and a cup of coffee one of these days. I've gotten a lot of good stuff from your posts.
Even way back in the TFL days.....Boy I miss those days.

Well stated..and agreed.

It wasnt my intention to incite any debate or to discredit anything you suggested. I was merely stating my thoughts, or umm...insights, to an otherwise interesting topic. Unfortunately, I have the bad habit of throwing out comments and/or starting debates in hopes of either validating what I know as being "right" or in a backhanded way, fishing for additional (useful) information from those who know much more than myself.

Either way, I respect your opinion(s) and am thankful for them. I can only hope that, through my various posts, some members here will leave with some useful advice or in the very least, "food for thought." I am certain that you have helped many here and have far more experience than myself. Therefore, I respect and welcome your opinions/thoughts.

Respect.

The reality is, all any of can truly share are our experiences and observations.

Now others around here, have not had my experiences or observations.
Just the same, I have not had the experiences and observations of those that have been in War, or worked for a Corrections Dept, or on a HRT/SWAT Team.

New folks cycle in, and it is the responsibility of those seasoned, with experiences and observations, to pass forward.

New Folks, it is your responsibility to be willing to learn.
New folks it is your responsibility to want "it".

Respect is earned. Seasoned folks earn the respect of new folks, and new folks earn the respect of seasoned folks.

Now if someone does not have a willingness to learn, or does not want "it", that is certainly their right.

Just have some respect for those interacting and either find another forum, or be quiet, read, and do not be disrespectful of the others.
You might learn something...if you do choose to stick around.

There is no holy grail, no absolutes. Evil uses many ploys, methods of operations, as there are many models of criminals and many different environments.
Add, we ourselves differ.
Variables, plain and simple.

What I bring to the table ...
I was born into a high risk environment, and have various experiences and observations based on this alone.

I also grew up assisting mentors, whom assisted battered women, abused kids, physically limited, elderly , and War Veterans.
So I chose to continue to assist these same persons.

Mentors passed to me, I continue on, while passing this forward to others.
We cannot all do the same thing, we have a need to diversify and pass forward to so many , in so many ways.

In other words, we need not all do the same things, as we will leave others out.
It is all good.
There is no "Us vs Them"

Each one - teach one.

No, I never attended a know gun school, there were none. My lessons were private, with mentors.
Mentors that include some interesting folks, that had been there and done that.

Some were not from the USA, and these folks grew up in a country where war, conflict, and civil unrest was prevalent.

i.e. South African.
"In my country what is dropped, stays dropped".
Yes, I understand Awerbuck shares this...
I heard it too many decades ago as well.

You reach down and you might lose a hand, arm, or life.

Other mentors spent time in far places, and I hate to use the cliche's still they apply-
"We were never there..."
"We don't speak of some things..."

Plus I competed, in various things, including shotgun.

There was no 3 Gun for instance, just the same mentors and me, and our kind did such replications of real events that had happened, and replicated what might happen.

Re: Firebombs.
Nobody , except myself, has ever shared in Shotguns, the defense use of a shotgun, being used to fell a firebomb before it reaches something it was tossed at to do harm.
Most often a structure, such as home or business. These were also thrown toward vehicles, and to simply start fires.

A threat is a threat, and WE share the defense use of firearms, including shotguns, to stop a threat.

In the high risk industry, I once was working in the wee hours, and unknown to any of us, criminals had been working on gaining access through the roof.

They came in, while I was in this building.
These models of criminals had bypassed the alarms.

Re: PGO (pistol gripped shotguns).
First off, I hate the damn things.
Second, I had serious lessons on the use of one, as being in what all I was, I had a legit need, for one for some settings.
Third, I drew short straw ( actually I did not get straw at all) and assisted Armored Car Guards and similar with the use of a PGO.

Mine were Ithaca 37s, and mine were gifts from folks that honest to goodness cared about me.
Boss man told the mentors, and in house, get me whatever...
As time passes I received other PGOs from Sheriff Dept/Deputies, State Police, US Marshall, FBI, and City police.

Yes, I also had 870s...
Just 37s was what I toted most.

*snicker* No disrespect , just understand there is some serious, good natured ribbing that happens between folks doing things.

"Did you know somebody done stuck yore safety up there on the top , instead of down on the trigger guard where it is supposed to be?"

PGO Mossberg, we had a UC cop using one.
"Hey, the stupid Armored Car Co that I am doing this gig with, issues these, don't blame me, blame them"

"Yeah, right. Listen you bring us a bag of $10 bills and we won't rib you anymore".

I guess you had to be there, still we razzed like this all the time.
Being serious- Sick humor to stay sane.

He said he was going to shoot some light "birdshot" to get used to the Mossberg.
It made sense to me, to dump out his shells when he went to use the restroom and fill the box with birdseed.
My name was used in vain and ...

Respect does not mean you cannot have fun and pull pranks.
This was payback for what he did to me in regard to "rat shot".
Come to think of it, we were basically just a bunch of sick folks period. *grin*

New Folks, my point is, give it time, listen, learn, ask questions.
Yeah, you will be matriculated into this community, just give it time.

Careful you might get some bad prank ideas, then again this is not such a bad thing either.

.357, nice gun!
The first thing that I would do to that one is put a tactical light on it.... (There are scores of different effective tac. lights on the market currently for as low as $35.00) I know I've already stated this, but it is usually much better to see your potential target clearly, thereby increasing your chances to a) hit what your 'aiming' at and b) not hit something / someone that isn't the target.
Put plainly, you have to be able to see what your aiming at!

Here's my 870 Express with 21" Hastings rifle sighted barrel and extended mag tube and tlr-1 light.

One thing I would reccomend is to lose the pistol grip.

Totally useless,IMHO.

Find a load you like and work with the load at realistic ranges.

Read Massad Ayoob's primer"Street Survival".
Preferably before doing any shooting.

Some sobering accounts and pics in that book.

Try not to develop the human version of "meat mentality".

Always leave some form of low lighting in your home .Something that you are used to . It's amazing how well you can see in your own home .

Have a plan. If not, develop a plan that puts you safe and keeps others in the loop should something happen. Know where your fatal tunnels are in your home, BG's generally take the path of least resistance. Make that path their fatal tunnel. If they have to approach you, they are toast as you already, if prepared ahead, will know where to train your barrel.

The six inches between your ears is where you want to start. Think about what you are doing.

Accessories as mentioned in post previous might be nice, althought I would rather be maintaining trigger discipline rather than fumbling for a light or firing up a laser.

Keep It Simple Simon. I did not want to say "Stupid" as that wouldn't be nice.

I know its not the best thing for home defense, the 28" barrel could be a wee bit shorter, but for now it will have to work. I'm hoping to get something like an 870 with a folding stock or something of that nature in the future.

I am dead serious. Come into where I am or some others I know, and rack that shotgun.
I am not going to be afraid, nor will others. We have too many shells downrange to be "skeered" of a shotgun being racked.

Talking tough on the internet is the only thing you'll own anyone at, Commando. I try to be courteous on here but your post was ridiculous.
