Shotgun ammo for home defense

I bounce between the Federal Shorties or the Aguila Mini-shells buckshot loads. Based entirely on what I can find, the Aguila are usually easier to find. Our YT buddy Paul Harrell has videos on both brands to help do some effectiveness research to get you started.

2 grams of beeswax heated with #7.5 shot from a low-recoil 2.75" shell, poured back in so that all the pellets are embedded in the wax. Adding wax from the front after cutting out the crimp would only get about 2 layers down before the cold lead solidifies the wax. This way I'm shooting a slug, until it hits something. As soon as it hits something it starts melting and spreading. I've tested it on an 8" thick rotten cedar stump from 10' away. Entry is a clean round hole. Exit was about 4" across. That's good fragmentation, and unlikely to present a danger to anyone behind 2 layers of drywall, provided I hit the intruder. And hey, if you're going to miss, why pull the trigger?

12 gauge SxS coach gun I run a duplex load of #2 and #4's interior and limited outside ,bandoleer on the buttstock . I prefer .223 or 9mm outside depending on target as well as distance .

IF someone really agitated ME ,don't bother running ,you'd just die tired , as the .338 Lapua Mag. can easily out distance a speeding vehicle by a long long way .

Anything #4 Buckshot and above is good. Be aware of proximity of neighbors and adjust for over penetration. I love #4 buck for my 20 ga. Most 12 ga shooters favor 00 buck. I still like #4 buck, each pellet has approximately the impact of a .22 LR. And less of a chance of over penetration. Each shot from my Mossberg 835 3.5” of #4 buck is like getting hit with a 22 LR, 54 times. I can put 162 pellets down range in 2 seconds.

00 buck, 2 3/4", pretty much any brand name lowest price on the shelf which is usually Winchester or Remington. Which works best in HD situation? Have no idea. Never had to use in home defense. At the range? To punch holes in paper? Any that does not punch holes in my wallet.

Had a coyote come through a couple times.
Told bud use #4 buck for his 870 and we'd call er in.
BOOM BOOM across the creek from his stand comes the yote at a good trot.
I blasted it w my .357 revolver, heart shot it flipped and went maybe 10 yards and died.

He used #4 pheasant load.

Oops.

Now I do have some left over #4 turkey loads. Buffered, plated shot, controlled wad......I suspect it would just be one nasty hole at HD distance.

It aint a promo game load.
