That stuff smells pretty good. But then I don't make it a habit of sniffing the snuff.

It sure beats the smell of the old military GAA grease.

Hoppes #9 does it all! Well, almost everything. The smell is distinct and it is comforting! don't know if I would go sniffing the bottle though. ;)

I havent used it years. I have a supply of the military break free. Ill have to go buy some this weekend again just because.

Speaking of Hoppes, maybe someone else ran across this too. I seem to remember reading a post in some thread on another forum that due to an EPA ruling years back that one of the ingredients in the original Hoppes formula (curiously enough the one that gave the distinguishing scent) was toxic or cancerous or something. Anyway, it forced the makers of Hoppes to adjust the formula but were careful to add other things to keep the scent as close to the original as possible.

Apparently if you were to hold a bottle of the original formula of 25-30 years ago, and a bottle of the current formula, you MIGHT be able to tell the difference but most wouldn't. The makers of Hoppes were definitely not stupid !!

Anyone know anything about this??

Could that have been MEK (MethylEthylKetone)?

That stuff is a very powerful solvent that would take the stripes off a zebra, and it was severely clamped down on in the '70s.

Ol' Hoppes #9...

(Inhaling)

Ahhhh.

Nostalgia in a bottle, besides useful.

I bought the jumbo bottle...don't know what I was thinking. I'll probably be passing this on to my yet-to-be grandkids...

Kinda like buying a gallon of wood glue!

Thanks Blackhawk...I think that must be it...I remember it was one of those long "ethyl" names and the timing is right. They said it was nasty stuff.

:D Hoppe's #9, my favorite scent.

A day of shooting isn't complete till the Hoppe's comes out.

I've tried other brands, some that would clean you sinus cavities out from across the room, and others that smell like pancake syrip. Tried CLP, gunscrubber, and others, but nothing works and smells like good ole Hoppe's #9.

I just bought a new pint bottle . Wanted a quart, but couldn't find it.

OH, here is a use for Hoppe's. If you ever leave a good ball point pen in your car in the summer and the refill leaks all over the inside of the pen, soak it in Hoppe's #9. Ball pen ink is mostly an oil, and Hoppe's will disolve it without hurting the pen.

So if you want to get ink stains out of your shirt and accomplish the cologne thing also while clearing your sinuses, we have a solution? Wash lightly afterwards, and you're good to go. ;)

Dang, never knew I had such a versatile product sitting in my garage...

Hoppes is what you use each 4th cleaning of the gun, having used Ed's Red the prior cleanings. Hoppes will get the copper fouling our while Ed's does not do a great job of it.

You mean #9 ISN'T a cologne? :D

Typical post-range activities:

/me cleaning the pistols with #9

/wife sniffs every couple of minutes, smiles and says "Mmmm, I LOVE that smell!"

If I could convert that into a cologne, I'd be rich, I tell you...

Hi everyone,
I like the hoppe's smell but it lingers. I use clp now the hoppes must have acetone in it and I dissolved 2 sets of plastic grips and took some of the finish off of a polymer coated pistol.
Also something that smells as strong as that cant be that good to inhale! pete

i certainly hope you guys are joking about using it as cologne, bathing in it ( i know that is a joke) etc. that stuff does seep into an through the skin, and ends up in your liver. enough of it and you wont have to worry about your sense of smell. because the only thing you will be smelling is your own decaying flesh in a box underground. and yes, it does go bad over the years. i think more to contamination than age. as for the new bottle that is 20 years old, if it looks and smells like new, it is probably good to go. sealed is sealed. the stuff on the inside doesnt have a calender. and i have yet to see an expiration date on a bottle. i also can relate to remembering dad teaching me how to clean our guns. GOOOOOD MEMORIES i hope to pass them along to my kids as well.

I will never, ever use anything other than Hoppes #9 to clean my guns, period.

and I second the idea of a Hoppes cologne...love that smell

I was JUST wondering about this very subject couple days ago moooose - what kind of gloves do you wear, and just how dangerous is a bore solvent like that - how much skin exposure before leading to disease? I wash quickly after cleaning, but perhaps I should wear gloves....??

You might know you're a gun enthusiast if you're using Hoppes #9 as air freshner/cologne.
Btw, does anyone make a gunpowder scented cologne? :D
