That would be on Mossberg shotguns. I have a chance to pick up a model 395 bolt action shotgun cheap. Very good shape but broken spring in the mag. I really don't need it but I thought it might interesting if I could remove the choke, shorten the barrel(20" or so) and reinstall. Suggestions welcome.

Pretty sure they are screwed onto the barrel. Should be possible to remove it and have the barrel rethreaded at the new length. Or for about the same cost, have the barrel reamed and threaded for screw in chokes.

I thought they were soldered on. Mine sure seems to be. The outer sleeve screws on but I think the main body is soldered. I may be wrong. As mentioned above, chop and reinstall with a modern version, unless you can figure out how to remove that main body of the choke portion.

If it's aluminum, it has to be threaded & screwed on.

If it is steel, pretty sure it is sweated on with soft solder.

Use a magnet to check which it is.

Good thought RC. I hope it's sweated on. Should be simpler to reinstall with a minimum of tools. As I stated in my 1st post cheap is the main reason I'm looking at it. 75.00 bucks. But it needs a mag spring that is OOS everywhere. Replacement mags are listed from 21-39.00. So I'm not buying a new polychoke if I can reinstall the one on it. For that kind of money I could look for a used pump with screw in chokes. Decisions decisions.
