how did you fare through the ammo shortage .....

Honestly, I never came close to having any shortage of the ammunition I shoot. But I cut down on my shooting when I saw that it was not easy to replace. I started buying a couple years prior to the shortage. I didn't buy it because of any shortage; rather I purchased the ammunition because I saw prices rising.

Relative to my normal shooting, I have years of 22 ammunition cached and months of just about everything else.

Out here in the great wasteland of California, we were hit with two factors: a general shortage, and a pending law signed by the last Hollywood actor Arnold. The law banned internet sales of most handgun rounds, but most all the major suppliers, including CTD, said they were suspending ALL ammunition sales to California. This made the run worse, and a number of gun shop owners started to really jack up their prices, to the point that a number actually lost customers, myself included. My sources tell me that a few that have survived have a lot of that same over-priced stuff still on their dusty shelves, and I don't care anymore. Because of them, I urge all buyers to do as much of their business online, and I likely will never buy so much as a screw in a LGS. Their greed got them where they are, they can deal with it.
As luck would have it, the law was actually suspended by the courts, but likely will come back again.
The benefit was the discovery of Wolf primers, that have proved to be just as good as any other brand, and for a lot less.

Primers are all sold out in my town. I live up the road from where they make the CCI and Blazer stuff. Rumor is CCI/Blazer/whatever their name is has been making things at regular pace, but stockpiling it all in a warehouse. Their plan is to have lots on hand when the election heats up and the buying spree hits. Then they can sell at high prices. So I suspect there will be more primers on sale very soon, but for now, there are none for sale around here except some rifle primers here and there. I snapped up the last 1K of large pistol primers this afternoon.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about what is to come. If store-bought ammo sells out, and there are no primers either, then I cannot buy or make ammo. Guess I'll make bigger cast lead bullets so I can throw them.

Wow. I thought to myself jokingly, that not being able to find CCI small pistol primers was due to people hoarding them. This was a yesterday!

I also couldnt find my H335 or Unique powder at my Cabelas.

As I don't shoot as much as I used to, it hasn't been a problem for me. I have bought a few boxes of .22 Mag and .38 Special at LGS and a couple of gunshows in the last 18 months, but that's it.

Since I reload it wasn't much of a problem, sort of hard to get certain bullets from time to time and primers were really tough to get but since I had a bit of a cushion I fared pretty well. Sure played hell with prices though.

I fared very well.

It pushed me over the edge into reloading. :D Now I'm stocked up on primers and powder, as well as loaded ammo. I do need some more bullets.

I don't recall an ammo "shortage". I buy online and back then, yes there was a shortage of choice but not overall availability.

I recall the ammo shortage. Now folks are beginning to think about the next one. Guns and ammo are selling quickly.

Never had a problem getting finish ammo but primers and some bullets labels can be hard to get more costly at times at times

There were probably at least 10 times that i went to every walmart in the city and there was no 9mm on the shelves. And there are 10 or 11 walmart supercenters within about 20 miles from me.Since then i buy 3 or 4 boxes every time i go.

I got burned on the last shortage because I didn't know there was a shortage until I went to buy ammo and found out there was literally none of the common semi-auto rifle or pistol calibers left on the shelf.

...Which is why I'm trying to buy a Makarov. 9x18 wasn't effected, and it probably won't be again. My paychecks are barely getting me by and buying ammo involves saving for several weeks to buy a couple boxes. I always keep enough ammo though to fill all of my magazines, plus 200 rounds of 5.56. Hopefully 9x18 won't skyrocket like 7.62 Nato did last time...

Stopped by Sportsmans Warehouse this evening to get some small pistol primers and the shelves were almost bare. When prices hit $50.00 a brick, we'll suddenly have plenty. Here we go again.

ammo shortage?

I did LOTS of shooting with .22 conversion units for my auto pistols, .22 revolvers, and the .22 conversion unit for my AR-15.

I ended up buying a .22 converter for my Sig 226, a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 as a sub-caliber trainer for my Colt A3 and a Walther PPK/S in .22 as a sub-caliber trainer for my PPK and Sig 230.

I happened to be at Farm & Fleet one day when the Winchester ammo guy was there -- he told me that most of the shortage of a few years ago was caused by (1.) panic buying after the last presidential election, and (2.) the fact that the big ammo companies were filling military orders first and LE orders 2nd. They were cranking out as much 9mm and 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm ammo as they could to fill the military orders, and everything else was a lesser priority.

I noticed ammo prices starting to creep back down in July of 2010. "Down" being a relative term . . . .

I've been buying 100 rounds of .38, 357, and 9mm just about every Friday for about 4 months now. I've also just recently started buying 100 rounds of .45 in the last few weeks. This was not due to the upcoming ammo scare. I recently bought these guns in the last 6 months or so. I collect guns AND ammo.
