How good a shot are you?

Mike6161: Keep at it, you'll get used to it. It's worth noting that you're somewhat consistent, which is a good thing. Being consistently bad means that with enough practice, you'll be consistently good.

I'd say I'm a decent shot but there is a lot of room for improvement as well.

Shotguns: I usually get about 17-18 out of 25 clay shooting. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. Ducks are a little harder to shoot.

Rifles: I'm good enough to be deadly to anything within 150-200 yards. Farther than that, not very likely as I have no practice shooting further than 200 yards. I've killed every deer I've had a good shot at. I have missed a running deer once though.

Handguns: It really depends on the handgun. I am much better when I have a 1911 in my hand. Here is a target from last week shot at about 10 yards with my HK P2000. The shots were fairly rapid fire and I started to rise on the paper a bit. Not my best but it's all I have a picture of.

Sears and roebuck .22lr 50+ year old semi auto... 50 yards with iron sights... notice that the 4 corner circles are seperate groups than the center shots... gotta be at least 100 rounds on that target... and most of it was me rapid firing and screwing off... i will say, every shot in the red was my 8 year old... damned if he doesnt have way better eyesight than me

I've got a video of me shooting claybirds with a Suomi set on semi firing 9mm tracer ammo, getting all hits. Best string ever (not on video) was 17 straight in front of several thousand witnesses at Knob Creek. At the same shoot (not on video) went 5 straight on clays with a 16 lb. .50 BMG shoulder rifle.

On the video I also detonated a thrown stick of ditching dynamite with a Colt Monitor. I'll dig up the vid and post it on Youtube.

Glockman19:

I think that was either my G19C or my G17. It's an older target, so I am not positive. This was a pic, not a video. With the current targets, I use video, and annotate verbally what I am firing before I start. I should have back then made written annotations. Live and learn.

With group shooting, I've shot a couple of sub 0.200 5 x 5 shot aggs, and one sub 0.4" (not MOA...) 200 yard 10 shot unlimited group...

Handgun, never really kept track, but started working on speed a couple of years ago, and got so I could dump a pair of mags into two pie plates at seven yards in under 10 seconds with no misses...

Good enough of a shot that I can move and shoot, and still hit the 8 ring at 20 yards. Takes years of practice, and a lot of range time...but anybody can get...and don't forget to keep your skills up!

Remember now a Savage won't shoot so it got to be me

im not the best, seen oldtimers out at the range who can shoot quarter size groups at 7yds all day long. now that is good shooting!

i just love shooting all sorts of stuff though

I am probably the worst shot on THR. But what I lack in skill I make up for in volume.

Quantity has a quality all its own.

I've shot trap with my AR...

But I didn't do as well as I did using a 10/22.

AR: Rock River M4gery with a EOTech. Hit about 50% of birds thrown (3/6). (At a rifle-safe range) Okay, I'll attribute that score in part to "luck". I quit while I was "ahead". Basically one shot/bird. Once it gets too far out, it's almost impossible to hit and recoil recovery on the AR, without a brake, is tough when tenths count.

10/22: With a shortened barrel (to legal minimum) and a 'scout style' red-dot scope and a slicked up action job. Shot birds all day long... consistently hit between a third and a half of all thrown after a five or ten bird warm up. If you miss with your first shot, you can usually get a second or a third if you need it with the 10-22, although the first one is your best one.

And before anyone hoists the BS flag: You can buy the video of me shooting birds from chiefaj.com. He uses it to advertise his "Moving Target Marksmanship" course.

Oh yeah, and I really enjoy shooting incoming clays with an adult-sized Red Ryder BB-gun. In fact, I'm the USA National BB-gun champion, for what that's worth. (Shot 8-10 in the finals on incoming clays).

I'm not super-human. There's "tricks" to doing this. I can also shoot aspirin tablets out of the air with a 10/22 or BB-gun - and I can teach you and/or your kids to do the same, often within 15 minutes of instruction, easily with a half-hour of instruction. Quarters are almost too easy (and expensive!). Paintballs are messy. Charcoal briquets are perfect to teach with.

And I still have plenty of learning left to do. I recommend (HIGHLY) the Appleseed program for those who haven't had it yet (or who've been out of the service for a while). It's worth its weight in gold and it's cheap!

And if you want to shoot trap with a rifle like I'm talking about, Chief AJ will teach you that as well!

I consider myself a very lucky person to say that I've enjoyed shooting trap with a rifle. Few have the opportunity in this day and age to have a safe place to do this.

All the best...

John
