How good a shot are you?

Well now, I learned to shoot two years ago, took nearly two years off to have a baby and started shooting regularly in August.

My personal best in trap is 22/25, which I achieve fairly regularly at this point.

Four inch or so groups with a Marlin 60 at 50 yards.

On paper--BIG paper--with the .22 and a 91/30 at 100 yards.

Three inch or so groups at 7 yards with a S&W 59--9mm semi, but my groups are consistently high.

On paper at 25 yards.

I'm still at the point where I'm figuring out what I'm doing, and I'm devoting most of my attention to trap at this point.

Nothing to be proud of, compared to most of you guys, but hey, I've been at this less than four months. I also have to adapt things a bit since I have a very pronounced weakness from an injury on what should be my strong side. I shoot right-handed, and my handgunning is all one-handed.

My current goal is to get my first 25/25 in trap. To do that, I'm actually working on the skeet field right now, to get better precision. We've got a guy at my range who runs things during the summer and heads south for the winter; I told him by the time he heads back north, I'll have my 25.

My next priority is to refine my handgun technique, get rid of my tendency to shoot high, and start shooting actual groups from 25 yards. The problem there is probably weak wrists--I generally use some small weights for wrist and arm strength, but I was quite ill for a couple weeks and let that go. Now I'm planning on restarting my work-out routine as soon as I finish final exams--another two weeks. Until then, between the cold and pending finals, I'm just making quick range trips once of twice a week in the hope of staying at my current level of proficiency.

I'm also really focused on reloading right now, so that this hobby will be sustainable in the long and so that I don't nuts on those days I can't get out to the range.

I don't have any photos of my handgun targets:mad: but here is one my wife shot with my Kimber Target at ~25 feet. The .22 holes were from my son:

Here are some rifle shots. The one on the left is 5 shots with my Eagle AR with match barrel and trigger and the other one is 3 shots with my Rem 700 VS. Both guns are in 223 and the target was placed at 100 yards. The square on the target is .350" to give you a reference.

This one was shot with my DPMS LR308 at 200 yards. The orange dot is .400":

I'll be honest I'm a really horrible shot. especially for as much as I shoot. I was tweaking my grip and stance a bit today and I think I might have figured outmy consistancy issue and I think I'm squeezing my fingers when I pull the trigger. I really need to get a .22 conversion for my glock...

When I'm practicing, I'm better than 75 - 80% of the other shooters at the range.

And I'm not a very good shot, merely a decent shot.

I shoot mainly rifle & pistol w/ iron sights. A good day with a rifle is 3 MOA bench and 5 MOA offhand.

Well, lemme see here.

IIRC:

M1A, 25 yards, scoped, at a shooting cadence of 5-10 seconds per shot:

M1A, 100 yards, scope, shooting cadence of 5-10 seconds per shot:

Above:

I've since ditched that scope and mount in favor of a lower power scout scope. Accordingly, my cone has opened up to a 5-8 inch circle, and my cadence has decreased to a stable 2-3 seconds.

I hit a target once

I tend to push my shots down. Still working on that. Bob Smith (FRGC) proved that it wasn't the gun (Taurus PT911, 9mm). He packed most of a mag into an inch at 15 yards.

I push the XD-40 down as well, pretty much the same way.

Rifle is different.

Bottlecaps at 50 yards with Ruger 10/22 and Marlin Camp 9. Coke bottles at 50 & 100 with the Kel-tec SU-16. All with open sights.

I've got a target pic somewhere of a 15 or 20 yard target done with the Ruger Mk II, and that's 10 of 10 in the middle ring.

Funny, I don't flinch or push the Mk II, just the 9mm and 40 S&W. Best I ever did with the Taurus was 10 rounds rapid fire at 15 or 20 yards, all grouped in about six inches. When I slow down, the shots begin to wander.

Gonna hafta get me some professional help.

"Und, zo, tell me, how long haff yoo had ziss problem . . .?" - :D

You wouldn't happen to be posting one of your wife's targets while she's in the hospital would you?

Hope she is doing well by the way.

Heavens no. Hers would be better. :D :neener:

She's doing well thank you, sir. A long way to go yet, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Arfin, if I could give you some advice that has helped me....
Handguns require lots of trigger control. The Taurus probably has a heavy trigger combined with a long travel. You need to learn where the trigger breaks and pull it straight back. After that, squeeze the trigger till it almost breaks and then concentrate on your front site placement while squeezing that last little bit.
You should start with your target close ~7 yards and then when you improve move the target out. Make your target small, not necessarily the paper itself but the dot you are shooting at. Aim small, miss small. ;)

Quoted from article in Jan. issue of Guns by Duke Venturino

"A man can be a pillar of the community, honest as the day is long; someone who never misses a payment and whose word is his bond. Then ask him how accurately his guns shoot or how well he can shoot and he becomes a pathological liar!"

As for me. I can't drive tacks but then I am not shooting at tacks.:D

I like this thread even though it proves nothing. As someone once said, it may have been Jeff Cooper, your only as good as you can prove on demand. All else is just story telling. By the way, I shoot pretty good.
maybe we shoud have a High Road shoot off!!!!!
how bout it??

I shoot well.but I'll never be as good as I want.this is a good day at 25 yards with taurus 905 w/CT grips ammo was 147 ranger T

Here's mine, Taurus Tracker 357 mag and my XD-40. XD target is on the left, Tracker 357 on the right. This is from about 15 yards out, 2 handed weaver stance.

I don't have any pics of targets to post, and even if I did, I wouldn't post them just to save on the embarrassment. I shot my first .22 at age 4, and have been shooting off and on ever since. I'm 25 now, and I am one of the lousiest shots I know.

The sad thing is, I was a great shot (or at least I thought so) when I was a kid. Then for some reason or another, I unlearned every thing, and started changing my sight pattern with every shot, jerking the trigger, and messing up my breathing. I eventually fell in love with shotguns and high-capacity "assault weapons", and there's times when I miss with those too.

It took me 2 to 3 tries every time I had to qualify in the army with my M-16, while there was 4'11" females who had never even seen a gun till they joined the army, that would qualify expert first try. By the second or third try, I'd always hit 31-33 out of 40, so it could of been worse, but it was still frustrating nonetheless.

I've started practicing more though, and have been hitting a lot better in the past. The insane ammo prices have caused me to focus a little more on marksmanship too, but that also cuts down on how much I can afford to practice in the first place.

The best shot I ever made was on a badger with a .22 mag. I don't know how far it was, but it was barely visible in the scope, and everyone with me (who are all excellent shots by the way), were quite impressed. Of course, it was more than likely just luck, and if I had to make that same shot twice in a row I probably would've missed it by a mile.

6" grouping at 15yds. I've heard of better, but that's good enough for government work (and for SD). When doing clips of double taps (DT, wait 1 sec, DT, wait, etc) at 3 yards I managed mainly a 3-inch grouping with one or two rogue shots within 5". All of them would have hit along the center line of a man-sized target.

:D:D I won't post any of my paper target results 'cause you'd only see a big white blank space. Really, tho---I'm not that bad but I need a lot of range time b-4 I'll show any results to all the world to see. But I love the practice!
