How is Ammunition Availability at Your Local Gun Shops?

Purchased a box of 22 Magnum for the single six convertible at the LGS the other day. He had a decent amount of it there and my only "complaint" was that it was more than it was last summer. Although I already knew that inflation and demand were gonna make me shell out more. Looked like other common stuff like 9mm were readily available. First time I bought ammo since the state tightened up the rules last fall. Thought there would be some paperwork or something involved but nowadays everything is on computer. I have had a gun transfer done there, and purchased a set of scope rings for it so I was already in the computer. He just entered my purchase into his record of all my transactions there.

LGS ammo shelves are full. High prices.
Lots of reloading components but prices are too high there.

I'm seeing availability on store shelves in the Twin Cities even worse than when I first posted this discussion. You need to buy your brand of ammo when you see it because it may be gone tomorrow and not be in stock again for months. I believe that demand for ammunition is becoming higher than ever.
The dozen, or so, people I know that still live in the Twin Cities area are expecting a less than peaceful summer.
Lots of ammo on the shelves around here.

What I find odd, but not too surprising, is that 1 out of every 12.9 Minnesotans 21 years and older has a handgun carry permit (As of March 2022 when I crunched the numbers.). But within both the Minneapolis and St. Paul City limits only about 1 out of 20 people 21 and older have a handgun carry permit. But when you get to the 3rd tier suburbs and beyond about 1 out of 8 people 21 and older have a handgun carry permit. The people in the city have way more need to carry a pistol than people living in outstate Minnesota.

Of course this is about to change as on 03/31/2023 a Federal district court in Minnesota just ruled that the ban on 18 to 20 year olds holding handgun carry permits is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! The anti-gun laws are beginning to fall like dominoes.

FYI, since 2022, people have been shot on 10 of my bicycle routes here in Murderapolis.

Because of zoning laws here you pretty much need to go to the suburbs to buy ammunition and firearms.

2 retail stores have very selective stocks. I dont purchase anything local. Prices out in rural ak where I live, is nuts. I reload for all centerfire rifle rounds.

Good supply of standard ammo at the local box stores and LGS. No match-quality .22LR anywhere.

Some of the small gun shops around me are still hit or miss on ammo depending on the shop. I stopped by Graf's store front the other day and they had plenty of ammo out front and in the warehouse. Graf's is only 20 minutes away and also just down the street from the VA outpatient clinic I go to. I stopped in at Academy Sports and Bass Pro a couple of weeks ago and they had quite a bit of ammo too. Both are an hour from me. Midway USA is also an hour away but they don't have a store front.

Keep hoping ammo prices in store will get to what it costs online. Still above $15 a box for 9mm around here mean while it's close to $10 at some places online.

A local shop here has 9mm for $12 a box. Haven't been in there for a few weeks, and another LGS has some ammo but it's hit or miss at both places.

Do people actually buy ammunition at local gun shops?

I always try to buy ammunition at a local gun shop with cash. Up until recently I was able to buy what I wanted at my preferred gun shop and range and at prices competitive with online stores and I didn't need to pay shipping costs. Now I need to plan my ammunition purchases further ahead of just going the range and buying my ammo there. I also need to check the ammo stock at the gun shop before I leave the house so I don't waste a trip.

While I was searching the local gun shop websites today I just found the self defense ammunition that I was looking for and at 10% less than the online prices that I have been seeing. But no luck on finding the target ammo to match the muzzle velocity of my self defense ammo in stock in town.

It is getting better, but still not seeing to types.
300wsm (for a close friend) and 410????
Been into a few Walmart lately and they had some .410 birdshot. But it was 3" shells so no use for me. One of my frequent stop in LGS has it but they want $40 a box. Luckily a big gun super store has it for $15 a box and the clay range has it for $18 a box. The hard stuff to find is self defense

Thanks,
I bought two boxes (all they had) of 3" buckshot for my western field and 3 boxes (left three for the next guy) of 2 1/2" buckshot for my Bond Arms.
I would like some 2 1/2" for the Bond Arms snake shot....

In my area, weIl I only shop one lgs. Because , they are the best priced.
My calibers.
Dunhams.
9mm, Most available. Fmj mostly. $19 for 50 rounds is cheapest.
9mm hollow point. Some =Expensive
22lr. plenty
38spl.Non+p hardly any, If you can find any -Expensive.
38spl +p some = Expensive
30 30 very very little - Expensive
30 06 very very little =Expensive
410 None at any price.
Expensive = I'm not paying.
I have enough to do me.
I shoot 9mm to keep in practice
And
22lr for fun.
If I find a good deal I buy, If not I leave it alone.

I'm starting to see reduced 9 mm ammunition selection at my local gun shops in the Twin Cities area. Finding 30.06 ammunition is even more difficult. Most of the ammunition that I would like to buy seems to only be available online.
I was out at the big ones local a few days ago. Loaded ammo is well stocked - reloading components were coming back in, but now have dried up again.

I was on the pursuit for 30-06, 30-30, and 35Rem ammo at my local gun shop. A box of Remington Core Lokt 35Rem was $90. The 30-30 was Whitetail soft point for 60 and the 30-06 was the same brand and price. While the local Walmart didn't have the 35Rem ammo, the other two calibers were about $30. But the same gun store was selling 9mm FMJ boxes of 50 for $7. Some things are getting better, others aren't. My big barometer is waiting for the cost of components to go down. When they aren't being vultured at $100+ for primers.

Hello, I am a small LGS in Wyoming. I stock the regular stuff: 38, 45 ACP, 12 GA, 20 GA, 30-06, 7mm-08, 308, 6mm ARC, 22lr,5.56, .223 and 9mm. I can get anything anyone wants for the most part but I got stuff sitting on the shelf since COVID. Here's the thing, LGS can't even get REMOTELY close to the triple-whammy the big shops have over the small shop. First off, we have to pay mare, and not a little bit. The big box places buy by the pallet and ship to their own around the Country. They can also work with a 1% profit margin and get manufacturer direct deals. I can't touch that. They also get first-dibbs on everything. This is especially true with firearms. I've got customers who have wanted me to get them this or that for forever. Can't get it... there's something called "allocated" in the distributor world that keeps all the stuff people want out of the small shops. It's truly un-American. Every mainstream popular gun is ALWAYS "allocated". If you are a small LGS it's because you love the business, not because you are making the big bucks. It's the Wal-Mart effect and the online sites just made it worse.

I enjoy lgs and have bought a lot of firearms from them but I live in a free market world. The wal-mart effect and online sales keep everyone more honest. Without them 22lr is normal at 5.99 per 50 instead of 3.49 online.

But anyway, my lgs has a good selection of ammo and the prices are fair. For the casual shooter or hunter who they cater to on ammo they keep well stocked. I usually buy a box or 2 of 5.7 if I'm think it's a fair price. Currently 40 a box.

I remember back in the 50s 60s hardware stores were big in selling guns. Then kmart became much like walmart is today. That put a big hurting on the hardware stores. Eventually putting most of them out of the gun business. Now Lowe's and others have about finished them off.
