How many different calibers?

I like simple.
I'm at 8 right now but I could probably get by with five different calibers - maybe less.
I like guns a lot but it does get nuts trying to keep ammo for them all when you have too many different calibers.
IMO, keep the ones you need, the ones you really like, and the ones your dad/grandpa gave you.
The rest...
Sell to buy more ammo for the ones you're keeping.

That's just my $.02.

21 calibers in about 33 guns or so...

.22 LR
.223
30-06
7.62-39
.308
38 special
9 mm
.357 mag
.40
.44 mag
.45 acp
.45 long colt
.454 casull
45-70
.460 smith and wesson
.475 linebaugh
.480 ruger
50 ae
500 smith and wesson
.410
12 gauge

My opinion is a couple of thousand rounds for each caliber, so that you have plenty for trading if the SHTF...

.22lr (handgun and long gun)
.22mag (long gun)
9mm (handgun and carbine)
.38spcl (handgun)
.45LC (handgun)
.243
30-30
.308
30-06
7.35 carcano

410 gauge
20 gauge
16 gauge
12 gauge

Sad thing is I have traded around and reduced the number of cals in the not to distant past.

.22 lr
.38 spl
9mm Para
.45 acp
.223/5.56 Nato
30-30
20 ga.
12 ga.

Layaways and future plans will add:
.22 short & long
.44 spl/mag

So ... 8 current calibers (9 planned) and err, 10 current guns (15 planned). Not too hard to keep track of and all fairly easy to find ammo for. My needs are pretty well filled or will be soon and I'm actually feeling pretty good about my choices.

To start with I don't have ENOUGH guns. So I had to start with the total number of guns and count backwards for duplicate chamberings. I came up with 56 different cartridges. This may be off a little bit. I'd say I have every bit of 50+. Of all of those the only gun that I can think of that I don't have ammunition for would be the 8mm Nambu.

(This also counted .22 short only rifles as firing a different cartridge as a .22lr.)

14 calibers.

1 .22
2 .22 WMR
3 9mm
4 .40S&W
5 45ACP
6 .38sp/.357mag
7 7.62x39
8 7.62x54r
9 .308/7.62x51
10 .30-06
11 8mm Mauser
12 .223/5.56 NATO
13 5.45x39
14 12 gauge

No more for me, unless I win the lottery, or an African safari package, or some other low-probability event.

Um.... 25.

The only good thing is that many are in the same calibers so it makes stocking up on ammo much easier (12 gauge, 7.62x39, 5.56 & 9mm). :)

4, but the 12 gauge is out of commission at the moment...so 3, that work:

I might get a Sig P220 and a Remington 700 in .308, but other than those two I can't see myself ever buying a gun in another caliber.

Plus I keep 7.62 x 39 handy to use in my father's SKS. And I bought some 7.62 x 54r recently, as I figure I'll be adding a Mosin to my collection in the next year or so  .
