In a real life SHTF situation, be it foreign invasion/zombies/government take over, what ever, one can only carry a few rifles/shotguns practically. So, honestly, we may have ten guns, we may have fifty guns, but when it comes down to brass tacks (tax) what do you do?

I would imagine a 7.62 NATO/.308 rifle would be a good choice for long off shots, and plenty of ammo, as it is used by many governments.
Or, .223/5.56 would be good... Something else?

I think if I where in such a situation I would want the biggest, most powerful cartrigde easily accessable and a machine gun (stolen from the government/zombies/invaders of course). Would you prefer a more traditional battle rifle or perhaps something along the lines of a sniper rifle? Just curious.

I though the zombie situation readings were getting slim, had to throw one in.

I would choose a traditional lightweight Battle Rifle along the Lines of the FN FNC, Ruger Mini 14 (pimped out of course) or possibly AR15, folding stock no matter what rifle i choose, that way i have a rugged rifle with large ammo capacity that is easily concealed in a backpack. I would pair this rifle with a .40 pistol or possibly a 1911.
If walking i need to travel quite light and thus i will choose smaller battlerifles rather than a G3 or M14.

I wouldnt carry any its a good way to end up executed jailed or detained. Have access to guns yes but carry no.

Oh yeah IBTL

i have carried 28 concealed firearms at 1 point just to see how many i could... im just glad i didnt get pulled over its not illegal but im pretty sure i would have been detained for awhile not to mention we were on our way to the range and had about 60 other guns with us and about 50k rounds of ammo (i was able to fill the entire bed of the pickup truck (with hard tonneu) with guns and ammo...

ibtl too

Worry more about how many rounds of ammo you can comfortably carry for your rifle.

Then start practicing with it. No need to SHTF scenario the need for precision rifles if you can't hit a target at 100 yards.

It's a frequently overlooked issue, not just in SHTF situations but in general. Most people who have not schleped iron across the great outdoors underestimate the nuisance and weight involved. One rifle and one handgun is about max, with a single rifle or carbine being better if it's possible. More than that start to get heavy by mile 1 and REALLY heavy by mile 15. You also want something that slings without effort and balances well.

I have carried a 3 on a 30 mile backpacking trip, only once. Just to prove that I could I carried a 30-06, a mossberg 500, and a 6 inch wheel gun with 100 rounds for each. That plus the bare minimuns for food and shelter and it was a very heavy pack, didn't weigh it, but it was heavy enough that I would not do it agian unless my life depended on it.

I think probably an SKS with 150 rounds in stripper clips and a pistol with 100-150 rounds would be good for shtf, if I could give up the shotgun

as a thought exercise

note a average person can tote up to 30 lbs with out much problem.

Scouts heading out to philmont routinely have backpacks w/ all their gear for two weeks or so weighing in at 60+ w/out food.

if you factor in 3 or so days of food you have to cut the ordnace load some.

figure a rifle, 300 rounds of ammo and a side arm w/ 50 rounds plus mags you have over 30 lbs if it is say a M1 carbine and a .45.

you wont move fast and if you add water at 10lbs/gal the numbers are not good. The Brits in Bravo 2 0 (zero) had backpacks that wighed in at over 100lbs.

There probably are searches that might turn up similar things here already.

Three.

An M-60 MG, a 1911, and a Chiefs Special.

And that was when I was much younger, stronger, more foolish, and ordered to do so.

BTW: Somebody else got to carry most of the MG ammo.

I've figured one could carry 12 Kel-Tec P3ATs properly concealed if it were deemed necessary. Make it 13 if you jimmy up a forehead holster and call that your "open carry gun".
