3 is my minimum for pistols. I prefer 5-6 but some mags are expensive and others I know I'll never really need more that three. My ccw for example, a Ruger LC9, I know I'll never need or use a 4th mag... Not going to waste my money.

Browning is spot on...magazines are "expendable" but necessary and our unfortunate "over-reaction" political environment makes availability uncertain in even the best of times.

For pistols, I think there's a distinction from a service-sized pistol over a smaller CCW pistol. Just about every double-stack pistol, I try to reach at least 8-10 magazines. For single-stack pistols, I try to make it 10-12.

Small CCW pistols and pockets pistols are typically more like 6-8 magazines. I think have only four for my diminutive Beretta 21A, but I have 8 for my M&P Shield and 8 for my Kahr CM9. I even have five magazines for my Kel-Tech P32; it's my most used mouse gun and I wouldn't mind grabbing a couple more mags.

With the "capacity" scare, I'm less worried about magazines under 10 rounds which is why I stock more of the double stack mags.

Magazine rotation is a good thing, and for my range training, it starts the night before when I load magazines...I hate wasting time on the range loading magazines and eating up valuable training time.

Christmas is a great time of year to add a half-dozen spare magazines to your stocking...they really do make great stocking stuffers!

The real trick is to set the goal and just buy a couple new magazines ever couple of months; over a year, you can easily meet a reasonable goal of 8-12 spare magazines for your semi-auto handgun(s).

I answered '4', but that is my minimum. for instance, I have 1 FS M&P in 9MM and 1 in .40. Surprise Surprise Surprise, you can use 40 mags to feed 9MM in the M&P. Have used them several times without issue. I have 4 mags each BTW, 5 AR mags, 5 S&W M22a mags, at least 3 for each CCW, and around 30 1911 mags including the ones that came with 3 1911's. Some of those works better in different guns. some are flat fitting standard size mags that hold 8 rounds of .45ACP.

All guns get 3 mags minimum.
Extended capacity "fun mags" at least a couple of each type.
Defensive guns get a minimum of 5 mags.
High use guns get 10 mags.
AR's...over 80 mags and still buying.:D

I used to do 4 mags per gun, but now I have multiple guns per model, so I am doing 4-6 mags per model. I can only shoot one gun at a time.:)

I'll admit I'm not a rifle guy, but it seems as if the folks with both rifles and pistols have more rifle mags than pistol mags. Since the typical rifle mag holds twice what the typical pistol mag holds, I'd have thought folks would have more mags per pistol than mags per rifle.

Peter...
Love the G20. And the mags. That was the first gun I never bought 40 years ago.

My target gun has two and my CCW has 2. The first allows me to load while my shooting partner shoots. If my CCW doesn't stop an attack after 5 rounds I'm toast so the 2nd mag is more for the range also.

I like a half dozen per gun, although I got ten for my Ruger Mk. III so I can preload a whole 100 round box of ammo before I hit the range.

I look at 3 mags per pistol as an absolute minimum, one in the gun and two spares. But I FAR prefer 6 as a minimum, three primary and three spares. I've got soft pistol cases I like a lot that hold the gun and 5 spare mags, giving 6 total and I like to use all 6 regularly to ensure proper function. I also find that case as loaded makes for a handy, easy to grab & go kit and is a nice amount of ammo to achieve a good practice session. Even more mags per gun would be nice, but budgetary reasons can make that prohibitive.

In rifles, I have only 10/22's and AR's. those mags I try to have more of. I was caught short at the start of the recent "banic" on 10/22 mags. I paid a $10 per mag premium to get 3 BX25's per rifle at a local dealer that still had stock, and very happily also was able to buy an extra 5 10rd mags per rifle from Midway. I got the 10 rounders as almost an afterthought and am glad I did as I frankly like them far more than the BX25's. I'm hoping someone will have a Black Friday sale on the 10 rounders so I can add a few more.

On the AR's, I like 20 rounders and got a number of them when I got my match AR after remembering how hard they were to find and how much they cost during the AWB. I actually gave away the few 30 rounders I had in preference for the 20 rounders but will probably be adding some 30 rounders back to the stocks as I recently acquired Tavor.

Better yet how many do you have on you right now? In this Theatre of operations, during the Holidays, I suggest 2 plus what's in the gun.

Many.

2 in car, 2 in truck, 2 in nightstand, 2 in belt pouch,...you get the drift. Or maybe 3, if they sold pouches that held 3. Inventory is useless without deployment. (Remove 2 from carry-on, check.) This way I can move around with pistol without lugging everything with it. And then there's the back-up inventory....:)

If I had a Glock 19, should I also count the G17 and floorplate G34 mags?

That was then. Aging encourages downsizing....

Being that 3 Glock mags are $75, I just bought another Glock instead. If Glock and other polymer gun manufacturers were smart, they'd include 5 magazines.

I keep only 6-10 magazines per type. But I'm only 5.56, .40 Glock, 1911, and .45 Glock. Any of my niche pistols only have 2 mags. Most of my gear is multiuse. So even if I have tow or three 1911's, 10 Tripp mags is plenty. "Per gun" doesn't matter.

Depends on the gun.

I have two for my CZ452 and 6 for my Sig P6. I find that 6 is about the right number but will buy extras when the price is right. For my needs 6 per firearm is about right.
