Depends on the gun, my rule is 2X what I typically need for the gun. Collectables get 2, small carry get 4 and so on

It varies by firearm.

The least that I have for one is probably ~3 for one of the least-used milsurp handguns and the most is probably the ~150 mags that I have for use with my 2 CETME C Variants and one HK G3 Variant (100 of those were from an impulse buy when I saw a sale for 100 LN Alloy mags for $100 ;)).

Like everybody, I have a range from 1 (1921 Luger) to 32 (Colt LE6920)

I generally stock:

5 for CCW pistols, so I don't have to download mags for range sessions. I usually run stages with 1 in the gun, and 2 on the belt. For CCW I carry a spare, so 5 seems to work out about right.

10+ for a match pistol, or anything I'll use in a class. I'd rather listen to the instructors, or shoot the bull than load mags.

I've only got 5 magazine fed rifles, 3 are suitable for HD ext. so they run from 10-32 mags each.

Sometimes like in the case of my HK45T it takes a while to get there at $62 per and shipping, but eventually I do. As we used to say, mags are a "Class IX" item and disposable, you should expect them to wear out/break (not anytime soon at %^^&%$$ $62 a pop though).

Yeah, the poll is a little restrictive. I average probably 4, but where the mags hold ten each (most rimfires), I have 5 each so as to use up a full box at a time (OCD-ness). I have more for one or two carry guns and the AR, and less for bolt actions and others.

I voted 6, but it depends really.
For my M9? I have 5. I don't shoot it THAT much, but I do like to have the extras
1911 - I have 7, but want to pick up some more
Glock 17, 19, and 26 - All have the 3 that came with the gun, but I have about 7 extra Glock 17 mags that work in all of those guns, so not quite sure how those count
Glock 20 - only have the 3 that came with it, but am looking for more
AR - have about 10

In general I like to have enough mags to load at least 50 rounds so I can spend my time on the firing line shooting instead of stuffing mags outside in our high heat and humidity.

My range favorites typically have enough mags to load 3-400 rounds.

The magazines are probably 90+% of all autoloader problems, so its pretty hard to have "too many" these days with all the talking about bans.

I predict that if you were active in the firearm hobby in the early to mid-90's you have more than the average.

Sounds like the voice of experience... :D

I know that the AWB definitely had an effect on what I consider to be an adequate number of magazines.

I would want 15+ but I have 4 for my 9E. For my SR22 I got 2 but looking for 2 more if I can find them cheap enough, so that's what I voted (4). My old Walther PPK/S only has two and I'll leave it at that.

Funny that Ruger make a heck of a strong, inexpensive gun but their mags are priced like they're made of gold.

I picked "6", but it really depends on the gun. If it's just something for casual shooting, like a .22, I will have two or three. If it's something that's rare, or for more serious use, I'll get as many as I can find, and buy more any time I see some at a good price.

I'm surprised by some of the low numbers of mags people have. I think that I'd have a panic attack if I only had 6 mags for any of my guns.

At least six, but it really depends on magazine capacity. A dozen or more rounds and I shoot for six, eight or less and I have more per gun. In those cases where wife and I each have a certain model, BHP for instance, it essentially doubles.

We don't mind loading magazine at the range, but we'd rather not, and extra magazines is a cheap solution to that particular shared foible.

I went with 6 because that's about what I average for handguns. Now, when it comes to rifles, the sky is the limit because I'm constantly buying more and more AR/AK/VZ mags.

I like four, its got nothing to do with my wallet being tight, I just don't like having to keep up/store a bunch of extras.

I've only got two semi pistols these days. A Glock 17 that came with three magazines. I use one of them and almost never fill it to full capacity. The other two just stay in the box.

And a Ruger P95DC that came with one ten round magazine. I wanted one more, so I ordered two from a guy on Ebay. One of those two malfunctioned, so he just sent me another one. So I've got three for the Ruger too. Once I proved the two new ones work, I haven't used them really.

I have three for my carry. I have two for my 1911.

Before I got my AR I bought eight 30 rnd mags. Then I gave three to my son. Then I went and bought three more again. :)

If it is a carry gun I'm not going to shoot much, the 2 or 3 that came with it are fine. If it is a pistol I'm going to compete with, usually 20-30 total.

Kinda hard to count - I have Glocks that can share, 1911s, CZs, etc. Suffice it to say that I could easily load up more than I could carry. If I have to flee home, cases of ammo are a lot faster to throw in the truck than hundreds of loaded CA-legal magazines are.

My primary HD guns each have at least five loaded magazines on hand. If that won't get 'er done, I probably don't want to survive anyway.

Off the top of my head, I have no clue how many magazines I have for each gun I own. It'd take a while to inventory, but I'm pretty sure I have a lifetime supply.

I went with 6. My budget forces me to balance utility and cost, so I have several for which I have 5-8 magazines. I have more for CC pistols, but I don't think I have more than 10 (or at least not many more than 10) for any one pistol.

The poll looked like how many I'd like to have... 15+

Now, how many mags do I really have? Probably three per gun average.

Darn this thread; I need to buy more magazines now...

5.56 AR - a lot.
6.8 AR - 2.
10/22 - a lot.
.243 Savage bolt rifle - 1. Should get a couple spares.

CZ75 - 7. I think. Might have a couple more. Came with two 10 rounders. Probably ought to get a couple more of those for IDPA.
3913 - 4. It came with two. I carry it all the time, and want more mags.
Ruger .22 MKII - 2.
