Against my better judgement i let my brother in law borrow a sporterized remington 1903-a3 that my grandfather gave me to go deer hunting with. he doesn't own a rifle just a bunch of pistols and shotgunns.
I know i specifically told him it was chambered in 30.06 but sure enough he bought .308 ammo for it and tried to zero it for 100 yards. he said he got 5 out of 10 rounds to fire.
My question is, what kind of damage could have been done to it? I havent taken it to a gunsmith yet. thanks in advance, Rick

I'm sure the barrel needs to be straightened after you wrapped it around his neck when he told you. .308 is loaded to slightly higher pressures, as well as a slightly larger neck, shoulder, etc., and is a bit shorter than a .30-06. I would have someone who knows what they are doing take a good look at it.

Good luck. Report back here if you take it in.

Nobody can tell you without seeing the thing. Take it to a qualified gunsmith (not a buddy who tinkers with the stuff in his garage) before you attempt to fire it again. Then suggest to your brother in law that he and his wife don't attempt to breed. (or if he married your sister, tell her to divorce his butt. I am sure she can find someone with an IQ bigger than his shoe size.)

Probably didn't hurt it.

There were some Garands converted to .308 by a sleeve in the .30-06 chamber. They worked fairly well until the insert came unstuck and ejected with an empty. The next round would usually feed normally and fire. Obvious by a short recoil malfunction and a .308 case blown out nearly straight, just the edge of the '06 shoulder angle showing. No damage to the action, but a puzzle about what to do with the barrel.

Take it to a gunsmith if it makes you feel better.
Require the dummy to pay him to tell you it is ok. I really doubt there will be any repairs for him to pay for.

Seriously, he probably didn't hurt the gun. But, I bet he has a nice supply of ".30 basic" once-fired brass.

About the worst thing I can imagine in that situation would be that a round could get pushed into the chamber, and then they attempt to push another round in after, striking the primer of the first round and letting it fire out of battery.

Since it's obvious that didn't happen, I'd check that the bore is still clear and get back to enjoying it as usual.

Of course, it never hurts to have a qualified gunsmith check things out (especially if someone else is footing the bill).

It shouldn't be any problem for a gunsmith to check the headspace with go no-go gauges, although I don't think that'll be a problem. He didn't fire it enough (I think) to mess up the throat. Fortunately, the calibers are the same, so he didn't blow anything up. You may have lucked out and you learned never to lend anything to your brother in law. :uhoh:

I doubt that he hurt it while he was fire-forming his .308 Ultra Improved cases...

Did he bring you back any brass?

Did he notice any weirdness? Like, when he took the first one out?

Better clean the gun too - I'm sure it's a little messy from when you shoved it... Well...

All seriousness aside, these are some of the funniest replies I've read on this board! :D What is the co-pay for removing an anal inserted 03-A3 at the emergency room.

Depends on whether there was a boot inserted with it too and if K-Y was used. If yes to the first and no to the second, it's gonna be expensive as it not covered by most insurance companies. Cheapest way to remove both would leave another boot print on one cheek or the other.

How much damage? Hard to say.

Like others have said, have a gunsmith look at it and send your brother in law the bill for everything (gunsmith, parts, new gun, etc).

When I lived at the gun shop before it closed, we had a guy come in asking for "'06 shorts" It took us quite a while to figure it out, but yup, he was shooting 308 in an '06. I seriously doubt it has any issues if he was shooting soft bullets. If he was shooing any mil-spec steel jacket or core there may be some issue with bullet jump slamming the throught. Best have it bore scoped.

Check the head space with go-no go gauges! Headspace problem
(Excessive) is why half did not fire! No idea what pressures were
generated, but at least it remained intact!!!:(

This is why you a) lend people ammo (its cheep, your guns aren't) or b) supervise people the first time they lend stuff.

I hope the poor 03 is ok.

I have 16 .30-.06 shells from a gun I sold. So now I don't have a .30-.06 but I have all these extra shells left.

Wait, hold on,

there's a .308 rifle in my safe.

Problem solved.

That ain't safe. Best drop 'em in yer .338.

How does the bolt face and chamber look? If any of those rounds split in the chamber they could've flame cut the chamber and/or boltface. Gotta agree with the others about taking it to a good gunsmith before using it again.

I hear the stocks are pretty strong so don't worry about it breaking when utilizing it for a buttstroke.:)

And the banjos played.
I can't believe that no one asked the all-important question...

What kind of group did he get with those 5 shots?

You should name the new round .308 Moron Improved.

Threads like this is why for many years I kept a " loaner" on hand when so called friends knew I had a extra or two and wanted/needed to "borrow' one so they could go huntin.
I finally learned to just say "no".

Serves ya right! 'I loaned a rifle to my brother-in-law.' Really!

If he's anything like any of my brothers-in-law he's an idiot and would be lucky if he didn't shoot himself in the foot with any firearm you gave him.

(Except for the one in Alaska; he's good with a rifle and sends us moose meat and smoked salmon every spring; but, like I said, he's from Alaska!) :D
