i am thinking i might get a mosin to play around with since it's a cheap gun, and ammo for it is cheap, but i'd rather have a carbine, only because it's smaller and i'd have a hard time storing a full length 91/30, but i dont want a plinking gun that hurts like hell to shoot, i've shot a 91/30 before and it wasn't that bad imo, how much more do the carbines kick? idc about noise...

honestly, it's about the same. The extra weight of the permenantly attached bayonet makes up some of the weight difference.

I'm an M44 junky,Love the damn things. Have a number of 91/30s,but the
44's are what get shot.

Lees flash and blast with the M91/30 is an advantage as well. Most are sighted to a combat range of at least 100meters, so at half that you will be hitting a couple inches high. The sight is a l post and U , so impose the target atop the post. \i/ sorta...~~LOL!!~~

Different ammo will have different results, when you do settle on the best, buy in bulk if you can, it aint gonna be as cheap forever...

As Hoth said, they kick the same. The M44 just has more blast/concussion due to a lot of powder burning outside the barrel. It is awesome shooting one at night just to see that muzzle blast!

Recoil is about the same. As stated the "flash" is bigger with the M44 due to the shorter barrel (some surplus ammo
can be loaded hot) .I have multiples of both. I prefer ther 91/30's simply for the longer sights. All MN's are built like tanks.

91/30 is way cheaper... ima go with the 91/30...

I think that's a good choice, with the weights of both about the same, the 91/30 will give you a definite velocity advantage with the longer barrel, and with the longer sight radius, usually more accuracy.
I have two M44 Mosins, one of which I have restocked with an ATI synthetic and removed the bayonet and bracket and sleeved the barrel over the bracket area. It's still heavier than hell though.
My other M44 is a beauty with it's laminated stock, and yet to be fired by me.
I bought both back when they were dirt cheap.

FWIW....Russian surplus ammo will give you the best muzzle flash from the short Mosins.....chris3

I dunno...shooting both side by side the M44 seems a bit more harsh to me. Either will do you fine IMO, both very sturdy and powerful rifles.
