Always......unless prohibited by law.
Sure, I live in a great neighborhood. However, reality has me going to/through neighborhoods which are not so great.

every day,all the time, never leave home without it. Populate each room with easy access (no kids). Arizona summers usually lower the caliber i'm carrying due to heat. Kel-tec P32 with belt clip is the easiest way to go. clip inside my adidas mesh shorts and i'm good to go

I also voted 75% or more. I always carry when I leave the house. I don't always carry in the house with the doors locked. I keep my pocket gun in my nightstand while asleep.

I carry when I feel there is a better than 25% chance I may have to defend myself.

I don't mean to pick on you 22-rimfire - but I've never understood how anyone is able to "feel" what their odds are in any given situation.

I've been threatened by an erratic driver while walking my dog in my own quiet residential neighborhood.

I've had very sketchy looking "meat salesmen" come up my driveway and ask questions about my dog (who was going nuts at the time).

I've been threatened while walking with my dog and wife and grandson in an upscale area park.

At that same dog park, a calm, well-mannered pit bull stopped to check out my grandson. I exchanged glances with its owner and we walked on. An hour after we got home, a man with a pit bull fitting both their descriptions was arrested at the park. The guy was guilty of several horrific and senseless murders.

Come to think of it - my dog seems to be the common denominator here! ;)

The point is: Just prior to each of these incidents, I would not have assessed my chances of needing to defend myself as more than 25%. And in fact, I did not need to present my firearm in any of those incidents. However, I'm convinced that in one of those instances, having a firearm allowed me to make it clear to the potential assailant that he needed to end his aggressive rush at me and step back.

When bad stuff happens, it almost always happens quickly, with little warning, and completely unexpected.

Hi All, I am very new to this forum and have been learning daily. Thank You! I am now confused(again!). I am wondering if all this "carrying" is done legally? Only a question and not an accusation. I am not asking anyone to admit they are or would do something illegal but, I'm 60 years old and live in NJ, just across the river from Manhatten and I would really like to be armed at times. My small town is pretty safe but it is changing. I am pretty sure carry permits are almost impossible to get so, I guess what I'm asking is what percentage of carrying is done without proper paperwork. I will understand if I don't get any responses but I really would like to get a feel of what others are really doing. REALLY enjoyed this topic. Thanks for letting me part of it. Peace, mark

...concerning the legality of carrying in some places. Not that I advocate breaking the law at all but I always remember something that was told to me long ago. "Better judged by 12 than carried by 6".

I'm asking is what percentage of carrying is done without proper paperwork.

I would say that answer varies wildly depending on which states the responders are from. In states like Kentucky or Tennessee (among several others), it's a simple matter to acquire a CCW, and any non-felon who wishes to carry will likely do the minor amount of work necessary to be properly licensed.

In states like Arizona, which just passed the "permitless" CCW (as I understand it, anyone who can legally own a firearm may now carry that arm concealed - Arizona folks, correct me if I'm wrong here) legality isn't even a question anymore. It is every law-abiding citizen's right to carry concealed.

My advice to you is to try for the permit; it may be easier to get than you think, and if you are going to carry, it's decidedly best to carry legally where possible. If you really can't get a permit, you'll just have to do what you think best.

I'm really glad I don't have to make that particular decision.

It's too bad that you live in a state that doesn't allow you to protect youself legally. In answer to your question, I have permits that allow me to carry concealed in most states, and I always carry where it is legal. I do not break the law, and do not carry where it is not legal to do so. If I did, and was caught, I would likely loose the right to carry anywhere. On those times I can't carry a firearm, I carry pepper spray and a stout hickory cane. You might be surprised just how effective a cane can be for self defense, if you have a little training and practice with it.

i never carrie becasue its illegal over here in europe. only movie stars and other big time politicians that want weapons banned from regulor joe schmoes etc will get sumkind of carry permit. we arent even allowed to carry blades. not even in our cars without a valid reason!

up here in northern europe we got plenty of moose and deer. how are we supposed to end theyre suffering after sumone hit them with a car? my torque wrench thats in the back of my volvo?

Oilman:
As KR said, many states have much more friendly laws for CCW than NJ. Since you are new here (I am too, but been lurking for years) you will soon learn about that. That's the good thing about forums like this. People in different states (and foreign countries) discussing the RKBA is a good thing. I think that is one reason we have been making so much progress in the last few years. The word gets around that CCW people are not all going around shooting everything up as the anti's said would happen in the mid-90's when "shall issue" started up in a big way.

Having said all that, I personally am committed to doing things legally. I won't carry where I am not legally allowed. I think more than a few feel this way. That is why there has been such a grass-roots push to improve the laws in favor of the law-abiding carrier. We want to carry everywhere if possible. The best way is to work on more favorable laws.

damn u illinoisians think ur so much better then the rest of us because u guys got a silent S. :cuss::barf:

less than 25% on my person. but always in my jeep. i travel about 40mi one way to work & often have to start at 2:45 am. so i like to have something with me while driving that late at night. plus when i get to work i cant bring it in any way. i do plan on carrying more often on the weekends though.

everybody in my family, including myself, does like OP
I know quite a few people who CCW, but only know one who actually carries almost all the time everywhere (duuno why, ain't none of my business, nice guy, good shooter)

gun forum demographic is not same as gun owner demographic, nor is it same as CCW demographic, not even close

I read somewhere recently that if you are authorized to carry a gun and you leave the house without it you might as well say BAAAA!
