I don't think I've seen this posted, so I thought I would share.

All items have a UPC bar code. Find the bar code of the ammo(s) you are looking for and make a note of it.

All Walmart's have hand held readers at most of the counters. These readers can show prices, on order, in transit, in warehouse, and what stores have what ammo in stock, based on the UPC code.

So, if you are looking for a specific brand or caliber, it makes it a lot easier. If you are willing to travel. Not far in larger areas as there are 2-3-4 stores around. Bit harder in small towns.

I found 500 rds of 9mm yesterday :D, I could have bought 1500, but I figured I would look out for the next guy ;).

Of course the clerk said, 'who ever shows up first, usually buys all of it'.

Love to follow this advice. Except my Walmart keeps all ammo behind a counter...far enough back so you can't read the prices, let alone the UPC codes. I've suggested to the manager a locked case with the ammo more visible might help them sell more, but I guess I'm just another voice in the wilderness.

The UPC code is on the price sticker, just ask the person at the counter what it is to write it down for you.

Prob be easier, to phone in once you have the UPC, and just ask them to check availability.

Gas is going up nowadays also.

Are you kidding? Call a Wal-Mart? Where do you live?
Where I live, no one would answer the phone. If you did get lucky and asked for sporting goods, no one would answer the phone there. If by some perfect alignment of the planets, they did answer, they wouldn't speak English, or know what a bar-code is.
Call Wal-Mart!!! Ha, Ha That's a good one!

I have called the WalMart near me several times. Never had any trouble getting a live human being or one that spoke English.

Ask them to do a physical look...

I called my local Walmart, they provided me the UPC code for 100 round WWB 9mm (2089221297 for those interested). Of course they had none in stock. I asked them to do an area search for other stores. The customer service lady was very helpful. She gave me results for two stores about 30 miles away, one showed 9 boxes, the other showed 7 boxes. She suggested I call to verify the inventory. I called, thank goodness! Neither store had any...they even checked the stock room. So, the moral to the story is....have them do a physical check, don't just trust the numbers the computer spits out.

After getting that kind of incorrect inventory information I gave up and didn't call any others.

Just save yourself the trouble and accept that it aint gonna be found ANYWHERE it seems, unless u wanna buy online! Did find a couple of stores here, but you better be willing to pay exhorbrant costs! After being told the costs, informed them they sure lost a custoner on down the line and walked out!

I only call the area stores as opposed to driving to each and doing a physical search. Sure, sometimes sporting goods doesn't pickup, but try back a little while later, and they do.

Since Wal Mart is one of the only ones not raising prices, you can't trust it will stay in stock long, so call, find out the info and stock up.

There are four Wallyworlds between my house and work and I know what day and time each typically gets it's weekly ammo shipment. When I'm in need of ammo I call a store the morning of it's shipment and ask them to check stock. Sometimes it's on the shelf and I ask them to hold 10 or 20 boxes for me for one hour. They always do. Sometimes they show it in stock on the computer but there's none on the shelf.... in any caliber. This means they've received their shipment but have not stocked the ammo shelf yet. I leave early and wait for the big flatbed cart of ammo to be wheeled out of the stock room and take my pick. I'm extra-nice to the sporting goods guy and often "help" him stock the ammo shelf as I dig out what I want. It's The High Road thing to do you know!

Good plan Mr.510.

One of the stores near me showed 54 boxes of CCI stingers at 7 am Sat morning. I went by at 5 pm Sun evening. There were only 25 boxes left.

I got 10. Now I can do a little practicing. :D

No problem getting ammo at WalMarts here on the border - unless you're looking for .380 or .38 special. Those mostly go to Mexico.

WalMarts are strung out along the border strip, less than five miles apart. Lots of them! So are Academy Sporting Goods stores. Between them and the other sources, ammo is plentiful, so are reloading components - although no one has small rifle primers down here, either.

I can't quite believe you people willingly spend so much time at a Walmart store, repeatedly call them on the phone, and actually reconoitter their stocking systems. Get a life! The gun stores and pawn shops are loaded with every caliber you could want. Yes (brace yourselves), you just might have to pay a penny or two extra per round, for some calibers. Spend your Walmart Sporting Goods Inventory time with your friends and family -- or even better, at the range!

Duke, every penny saved, is more rounds downrange. :D

Plus I kind of like the challenge. :neener:

duke of doubt-

Your right, the pawn shops have ammo. My local pawn shop has ammo, blazer brass 9mm (from walmart) monarch .223, and 7.62x39 (from academy). He knows people that work at walmart and academy that call him when shipments arrive. Then he goes over and buys them out. Once back at his shop he relabels the boxes covering any mention of the origional seller and marks it up a couple bucks a box.

Finding ammo is not a problem, finding ammo w/ a decent price is.

I have found an even better method for finding ammo at WalMart. Usually everyone has 3-4 WalMarts within a 30 mile range. I just go to a different one each time I go and I managae to hit maybe 4-5 different WalMarts every two weeks.

I just buy what they have that fits my guns. Sometimes its .22, sometimes it .270, sometimes its, 9mm, sometimes...

Eventually, you'll be stocked. Plus its kinda fun not knowing what you're gonna get.

It is well worth it to a lot of us. Every penny counts in my household.

I have to spend time there. I work overnights at one. I see ammo come in. I'm checking every night for stuff. Right now we only have .44mag, .38 special +P, and .40 S&W blazer brass for handgun ammo.
