depicts, that's a good story! Just remember my name is Don too! :p

Once with a friend we had cans set up between 50 and 75 yards for SKS shooting. My friend Sam suddenly whips out a Lorcin .22 pistol, swivels, fires and hits a can easily over 50 yards away. We were both in shock, then I started yelling that he could never, EVER duplicate that shot. He looks at me, turns, and hit the damned can again with one shot. I'll never forget it! :)

The last time I shot groups for accuracy with a handgun was with a S&W 629 testing it for a friend who's not really into handguns. I kept the holes inside a 4" bull shooting from a rest single action.

Normally I'm shooting a qual course on an IPSC target attempting to shoot 216 (minimum for FA instructors) or higher out of 240.

I can regularly smack a pepper popper at a lazed 100 yrds with my G-22.

15 of you guys are incredible!

I've seen a number (over a dozen, less than 2 dozen) of 1911s shot in a Ransom Rest at a measured 25 yards. Mostly custom or limited production, a few were factory stock. All of them were shot with 3 or more different ammos, usually at least 5, maybe 8 at the most. Federal Match 185 was almost always one of the ammos used, because it usually groups well. All groups were 10 shot, and measured from center to center. Each ammo was used for at least 3 groups. All told, I've probably seen well over 200 of such groups. I remember 2 guns breaking 1", ever, and only for a few groups, with certain ammo.
Just incredible (first definition).
Where were you guys when we had the virtual matches?

quote from JohnKSa,

"This poll says that if you know 17 handgun shooters, odds are that either you or one of the 17 shooters you know can shoot 1" or better at 25 yards."

OK, I went to the range this weekend. Some test loads in the Kimber from a rest. Now I know what the pistol is capable of. So the next day I shot some offhand. Yes, the groups were considerably larger, but that's counting the flyers that I pulled. I had some clusters in the 1 1/2" - 2" realm. But the called flyers really looked bad outside the black. But, to afirm the possibility that I know at least one shooter that can shoot 1" groups at 25yds.... Yes, maybe not consistantly, but I do know that at least one of our rimfire Bullseye shooters, with his 45acp(Performance Center), did shoot a 98 slowfire score this week. With the target finishing up at 5x, and his last shot being an "8" . That's pretty darn close to a 1" group. I think he's still shooting with open sights too.

put a paper plate out there at 25yds and I can hit it somewhere
most of the time.
Put it at 7 and I can hit hit everytime (maybe)

Anyone actually plan to shoot something other than a target at more than 50 feet???

I'll bet someone could come up with some real stumpers along this line for biathlon competitors! ;)

Seriously though, lots of people see "shooting paper" as an end in itself. I've shot a handgun at 50 yards but I certainly didn't do it with self-defense training in mind. I suppose I could dream up a reasonable self-defense scenario that required shooting at someone far away using your self-defense handgun, but that's not why I sometimes run the targets out past 40 or 50 feet. :D

Interestingly, a few years ago, a deputy sheriff here used his .45 to make a 58 yard shot on a running, armed suspect. Single round, lower center mass.

As you said, you can dream up anything, and there's a one in a million chance you'll see it.

Absoutely.
I plan on shooting anyone at any distance that they are shooting at me.

I've always hoped that if I have to shoot it out with a BG that the distance is 40-50 yards. I figure the chances of me being hit are slim but the chances of hitting the BG are very good.:)

Matter of fact I sight my pistol lasers in at least 25-30 yards. Then they are good for close up to 40+ yards.

I do great with my defensive-against-killer-rabbits :what: .22LR target pistol (SIG Trailside)! 1.5 to 2 inches, easy, at 25 yds, iron sights. (And the pistol itself is a lot better than that.)

With my new/old .357 Blackhawk, I'm still figuring out (ammo, grip, eyesight) how to get consistently in the black at 12 yds :scrutiny: (But it sure is fun trying !) :D

It really depends on the Fourth Rule. Middle of nowhere, sure.

vanilla_gorilla: I am no deputy sheriff; again, I can't wait to see how my lawyer will explain to a jury why I shot a fleeing man who was 174 feet away. And since Johnny Cochran won't be around no more...

I've never shot at 25 yards so i had to guess. At 3 yards I shoot about 2". At 7 yards about 2". At 15 yards it opens up to 7" or so. I'm guessing at 25 yards I wouldn't be able to hit a paper plate consistently. So I'm probably somewhere between 24 and 60 MOA.

Pretty good shootin' here!

Gotta remember, though, group size is not a linear extrapolation. That is, 2 inches at 12 1/2 yards is not 4 inches at 25.

I am very pleased with how my .45 does at 10 yards. A box of fifty tears out the center of the target. But if you count the flyers (there are always several in a box of 50) the group is huge.

Now, run the target out to 25 yards (the length of our indoor range) and I can't even see it. On a good day, I can get 3 shots on the cardboard backer. Maybe 1 on target.

If they aren't close enough so I can tell friend from foe (or bunny rabbit from next door neighbors shih-tzu) then I ain't firing!

I've not shot at 25yards in a while, been limiting to 15 yards exclusively recently. The last time I did that, I get about 5" w/ a Glock 19, but my accuracy seem to decrease a lot when not practicing.

Since I've not shot that far in a while, I'll give myself some room and claim 6-10", which I should have zero problem hitting, even 1 handed.
