Owning a double rifle is a pipe dream for most. Prices start at about $10,000 for a well worn used rifle and $50,000 or more isn't uncommon.

New doubles have never been more plentiful or cheaper. But they still aren't cheap. Here is a very good serviceable reliable new double for just barely under $10K.

308 or 30-06 soft point. it's a man sized carnivore that can run 50mph, not for long, but long enough to close the distance fast. best to put it down with the first round.

I looked at the Merkels at the NRA show and was thoroughly impressed. No, it ain't a London "best grade" gun but they're nice rifles for the money. The 7x57 (smaller frame/lighter barrels) was remarkably svelte and light but the .500 was not bad at all. Lighter than many. I may have to get one.
