Hi there,

I grew up on a farm and still go back often. Here's some of the animals I hunted recentley on our farms.

Kudu - Shot with .22-250
Blue Wildebeest - Shot with .30-06
Zebra - Shot with .270

Nice pics. Seems like if you only had a 3006, you could do quite well on the size of the animals in your pictures. Thanks for the posting.

22-250 on Kudu. I'd like some details, bullet, distance, penetration, where did you hit it.

Are you surprised a 22-250 will work on Kudu? I'm not. The PH I hunted with last in South Africa culled BUNCHES of animals like Springbok, Zebra, Blesbok and Wildebeest etc. with a 22-250. As I recall, he was on his 3rd barrel on that rifle.

Hi there, I shot the kudu at about 150m. It was a neck shot and instant kill. I normally study an animal's build before I hunt it so that I know exactly where to shoot to get an instant kill.

Oh yes, it was in the open as well. Wouldn't try it in the bush because the bullet travels so fast and is light if it hits a branch it will be affected.

The 22-250 is a very nice rifle and remember if the shot placement is good, no doubt the animal will go down.

Great animals and it is nice to make these pictures and details known to us Armchair Safarists over in the States.

Im sure most people think all there is to hunt in Africa is elephants and the only calibers worth considering are anything over 375.

Yip. Most people have a miss conception about South Africa. Lots of caliber rifles can be used. We use .22, .22-250, .270, .303, .308, .30-06, .300, 7mm etc etc. And if you talk about the animals that we can hunt we have :

Elephant
Buffalo
Eland
Kudu
Nyala
Reedbuck
Impala
Blesbok
Duiker
Steenbok
Gemsbuck
Redheartbeest
Blue Wildebeest
Black Wildebeest
Zebra
Warthog
Bushpig
Bushbuck

Only to name a few.

But I must say I would love to go overseas and hunt a moose if I can.

The problem is the finances. The rand isn't nearly as strong as the dollar so we must dig deep if we want to go hunt overseas.

Yes, we have to dig pretty deep in our pockets here too. I agree with your statement regarding "shot placement". Here, it is not permitted to use the 22-250 for deer hunting. It is of course plenty adequate with good shot placement, but we have so many novice shooters that think they are ready for the "big one" after 2 or 3 trips to the shooting range, authorities find it necessary to protect the animals.

Nice photo's. Would be interesting to see more. Gun shops, taxidermist facilities, as well as hunting trips in the field.

Thanks for posting.

Barno,
I saw some guys shooting baboon on a video. Have you ever done that? My understanding is it was the same as shooting feral pigs here. Also do you have any feral animal there or do predators keep that in check?
Something about the eland just makes me think good eating. What do you prefer to eat from the list you posted?

The "same" part is the baboon is being shot as a nuisance to farmers. It was just sort of weird to see baboon shot in the way as pigs, yotes, pdogs or any varmint. If you look on youtube you might find a video.
They are pretty smart and remind me of the pig problem in a few ways.

Other monkey things:
There is a resort area where the local monkees go on the beach and steal the tourists drinks when they leave them and some of the monkees became alcoholic.

In China monkees were getting the plastic grocery bags and using them to clean out apple trees. Instead of climbing the tree and eating or bringing one down they would load up a bag.

I saw in another of the OP post that he is a bowhunter. I would love to hear about bowhunting South Africa. That has long sense been a dream of mine to go on a three week safari with my bow. My pockets just don't have the depth to make it a reality at this point. Perhaps later on for now I will surfice to hunt African game from some of the exotic ranches of Texas.

I've hunted South Africa twice and I believe it cost me quite a bit less than it would have cost to do the same hunts in Texas.

I agree some of the south Texas ranches are sky high. I won a free trip to the King Ranch off of a raffle and it still set me back almost $2k. Not sure how the free thing worked out for anyone but the King ranch. I did however have a great time.

The place we go now called Sweet Water Creek bowhunting is alittle more on a average man's budget. $1,100 for a 4 day hunt one hard horn and two pigs will all meals and lodging included. Perhaps when the kids get a little older and I have less money tied up in my business Africa will be within my sights.

Just curious

what to do you do with A zebra?

I have been to south africa a few times for business, but these hunts look cool.

Liked Capetown........

Joburg...... another story

d7zo6.jpg I have a Zebra mount on my wall which is one of my favorites. A Zebra says Africa more so than a lot of other trophies you could get. The hide also makes a nice rug.

I've never eaten Zebra meat but I've heard it tastes OK. The Zebra though has yellow fat which turns some people off.

Grumulkin,

I agree I've got three skins at the house two rifle kills and one bow kill. I haven't eaten it either but I have had a horse steak in Paris. The guys were more than happy to take the meat after I shot my Zebras.

a .22-250 is a legal deer round here in MN too, I took one this year, but that Kudu seems to be a heck of a lot more animal than your average whitetail...I don't doubt that its capable of taking the animal cleanly, as the deer I shot got extremely dead extremely fast, it just seems that you'd have to be very confident you'd be getting a perfect shot

Wait-I was drooling over that list and your dream is to shoot a animal that I shoo out of my yard? Swap hunts?

Hey to people who live in Africa, brown bear, black bear, bison, American alligator, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, caribou, moose, whitetale deer, mule deer, pronghorn, turkey and mountain lion might seem like exotic game.

I don't care much about African safaris but I would love to hunt elk, pronghorn, moose and mule deer.

My dad dreams about hunting pheasants.

True, I guess. But I have to lock the lid of my dumpster to keep Grizz out. Takes some of the awe out of shooting one.
But elephant? That's a life long dream[with a proper .500 NE double, of course]
however #2 on my wish list is a 44 inch curl and a quarter Dall sheep. And there is one 10 miles from where I type this. In a state park:banghead::cuss::fire::mad:

Looks like the OP is dead on arrival!

Pity. Guess he didn't get what he was looking for???

Still a good thread though!

About 2 hours ago I had three moose in my backyard here in Alaska and we have a bull with a good rack roaming around as well, I shot my first one with a Ruger .338 from inside the house through a window, but all you really need is a shotgun with a slug.

I had a girl friend many years ago, her father was a big game hunter, her house had a ceter room two stories high and had every game animal except an elephant and a hippo. She was a small lady yet she used a .460Weatherby.

Moose is a great lean red meat, its so lean we have to add fat to make it into sausages, makes great chile, stew or jerky.
