This is purely hypothetical. Go out and buy the gun you mention. Just remeber, it was your idea. Don't blame me for the divorce.
You are going to get a general-purpose revolver. It is to fulfill the role of plinking, defense, etc. And possibly concealed carry. It is to be .38 Special + P or lesser in caliber. Here's the catch- it has to be in production and NIB.
If you already have the gun, post a picture of it.

Hmm... If we limit it to .38spl or less it can't really be an all around gun since you couldn't legally hunt deer with it sooo... from whats left I would say that a 3" barrel, steel (blued or stainless), exposed hammer J frame would be hard to beat. Bottom feeders do not have enough ammo flexibility for may taste in this application. The J frame puts the cylinder bolt cut outs between chambers so that a steel frame gun can take some decent pressure loads when needed and is small enough for CCW.

Ooops, you said current production so that leaves out S&W. Would have to take a serious look at what Taurus has in that vein. Maybe you would let me choose an SP101 if I promised to only put short cases in it. :) .

NIB? I would go w/ a Ruger since their current production wheelguns don't have those silly internal locks

Ruger SP-101, they make a .38Spl only variant and it's good for anything the .38 can do. Ruger also makes a .38 only GP-100 but I can't figure on all that extra mass to get one extra shot.

.38 is a good round and truthfully is plenty for most folks. I figure if I can shoot it out of all my .357's with no discount in accuracy then I have no need for a gun limited to it alone.

Hmmm that's hard.

I like the Ruger SP101 a lot, but I believe the only currently in production dedicated .38 Special is a 2" barrel, and that's great but to me it's not general purpose. That gun would never ever wear out, however...

Probably a Model 64, 3" maybe 4" pipe. They are currently in production. I'd just ignore the darn lock. Or a Taurus 85 with the 3" barrel.

But to be very honest if it was for everything, I'd want a .357, and it would be the 3" barrel fixed sight GP100.

Smith Model 64, but no way would I get one... too little bang for the buck, plus it has the lock.

Maybe a Taurus 82 Service.

Not a lot of choices out there for this thing.... I'm curious why the .38 +p limitation. That removes 90% of your current producion non-snubby revolver choices.

I have such a gun. 3in. Model 10. However, it's no longer in production, So...... I'll go with the 3in. Model 64. Not that pricey for what it is, but it's a good range gun, SD gun, and CCW. Especially with the round butt.

You may say " It can't shoot .357's!" Well, neither do I. I shoot 38+p in my 357 gun anyway, so why pay more?
This is mine.

Just got this BlackWidow holster. Thought I'd add the pics.

I'd have to go with the smith 64. yes smith designed the lock... but who here can honestly say that in all their lives, they've never had a dumb idea? There has to be some way to remove the lock, I did my springer ILS with a pin punch and a 2lb engineers hammer.:D
