I was reading the latest issue of HANDGUNS. My wife got me a subscription to the giant advertisement...I prefer AMERICAN HANDGUNNER, but heck...it is still a gun mag.

Anyway, Walt Rauch...about the only good thing left in HANDGUNS was talking about how we, as gun toters, talk .45, shoot 9mm, and carry a .38 snubby.

I realized I am guilty of that too.

I LOVE my 1911's, but stopped carrying them because they weigh a ton, and dagummit, Glocks are lighter, and reliable, and accurate, and add your own reasons here. My carry gun, as of late, is a Glock 37 in .45GAP. It is lighter, and more concealable than my Glock 21 or even my Glock 30, and it is still a .45.

BUT...that being said....I shoot it, but not nearly as much as I shoot one of my 9mm Glocks. I rationalize that by saying...well, ammo is dirt cheap for the 9, and it is basically the same gun...etc.

Now, move right along to this evening. My wife sent me to the local Safeway for some last minute grocery items.

So, I went to the bedroom to change from sweats to my street clothes. Sweatshirt, denim shorts, sneakers....you know...the Friday night, i want to be comfy clothes.

As I was slipping my belt into the belt loops, I just grabbed my old Smith Model 37 Airweight .38 Snubby, and an HKS speedloader full of CorBon 110gr jhps. I slipped on the Galco paddle, dropped the HKS into my left pocket, and was out the door.

Now, bear in mind...My Glock 37, and Glock 22 were both in the little safe I keep my most-often-carried carry guns in. Both were loaded, in a paddle holster, right NEXT to the .38.

It would have required no more effort to grab either of the Glocks, and a spare mag, than it did for me to grab the little Smith wheelie and the speedloader.

Then I looked back over the last couple of trips I made out of the house. If I was going into Phoenix proper, I carried the Glock 37, and a pair of spares. When I went from Tempe, where I live, to Avondale where the Mom In Law lives...knowing I would be going to WalMart, I also packed the Glock. When I went to Quik Trip up the street for a gallon of milk, and a powerball ticket...I slipped the snubby into the pocket of my jeans.

It seems the only time I even carry one of my 1911's or a Hi Power anymore is if I am going out of town (Don't ask me why), or if I am going to specifically shoot one of those.

That daggum .38 sure follows me around a lot. And to think, I keep calling it a back-up gun.

Makes ya wonder.

Is Walt Rauch and I the only two guys guilty of this?

hey, neighbor!

i carry a snubby about 80% of the time, a S&W 37 Airweight in a galco summer comfort IWB holster, and a speedloader in my pocket or two of them in the belt pouch.

Hmm. It's December 24, and you're dressing in shorts?

Why you must live in the desert SW.

<checks user location>

Yep.

Up here, I could carry an assault rifle into Walmart under all the layers and no one would know.

Not that I would, mind you, but just making a point about weather differences.

I sort of miss the SW sometimes.

it can make concealed carry a bit difficult in the summer months, unless you want to drown in your own sweat just walking to the car. good thing i've got the kel-tec p3AT, and i'm about to buy a Kahr.

well, this time of year up here, it's just as easy for me to carry my 1911 OWB. and I have been. but until the front sight wore a hole in the pocket, I just kept my 642 in my right side coat pocket. all the time. didn't even take it out, unless I was wearing a different coat. I think I'll sew a piece of cordura or something into my coat pockets. summertime, I sometimes carry my 1911 IWB, but yeah, it's a lot easier to toss my 642 in a pocket holster into my front pants pocket, and I'm more likely to do so, honestly.

Naw, I do the same thing, and I'm in Vermont.
Of course, my choice is between a S&W 5906 and a S&W 342. Even though I can (and have) conceal the 5906 beneath a t-shirt, it's just more convenient to stuff the 342 into a pocket holster. Looks like a large wallet (which I most certainly don't have :( ) and weighs about half.

Hey Erik,

The weather we're having (I'm near Selfridge) will let us carry just about anything we want. Ever think of putting a Fiber Optic front site on your Smith? May just save your front pocket.

Mine is in my vest pocket right now. (I don't heat my studio except when students/clients are here, so it's cold in the main room.)

We can't carry here in IL but I do keep a loaded .38 snubby around myself. I have ansewred my door with the snubby tucked in a holster under my sweatshirt many time.

Not me. I have two 3" 1911's and I carry one at all times. I do rotate it for a 3-1/2" Springfield hi-cap every now and then.:)

While at home, I carry a P3-AT in the pocket of my sweats. In the Summer, while wearing cut-off's, I carry a Kahr MK9 in a IWB under a T-shirt.

I've *been* alternating between my Ruger P345, my Bersa Thunder .380 and my Taurus 651 snubby. Lately, the Taurus 357 snubby has been winning out. It's very easy to conceal under an outer shirt while carrying OWB, and packs plenty of firepower. That is why it wins out over the .380. The reason it wins over the Ruger is purely from a size perspective.

Love that snubby.

My daily piece is a 3" 65-3,not a true snubby
but it works for me and it fits in my locker
at work. But when the weekend rolls around
i carry my XD-9 in a fobus paddle and a
beretta 21-A in a front pocket.

i live in phoenix as well and i carry the g23 in a galco summer comfort all the time with a spare g22 mag. i'll usually carry my g27 as well on the ankle but my lady has pretty much taken over that one. i'm a t-shirt and jeans kinda guy, though. i can see how if you have to wear a shirt tucked in it might be a little more difficult but there is still such an abundance of good concealment holsters there's no reason not to carry a decent size handgun. i used to carry a full size kimber bp ten II (hi cap) and it was a pain but the main reason i switched to the glock was reliability issues with the kimber (mag related and a different story). i think it was clint smith who said "a handgun is supposed to be comforting, not comfortable."

Lately as the weather permits long sleeve, shirt untucked, casual wear, I have been carrying my Sig 239 in .40 but in all the warm weather or dressed up, it's the 342PD. So light, so conceable, and it would be very effective if I needed it all those "nothing under a .357" guys not withstanding.

I sometimes carry a S&W 642 with a speedloader in my pocket as a BUG while on duty. I brought it in to the squadroom the day I bought it and all the guys started hauling their old service revolvers (we carry Glock 22's on duty now) out of their desk drawers and wishing they could still carry them. One comment: "If I could figure out how to get 16 rounds in my Smith, I'd sh**can the Glock." LOL.

I have to admit my aluminum J-frame is much easier to grab & go with and much more comfortable to carry around than one of my steel framed 1911's.

But I still carry my 1911's 95% of the time.

My main carry gun is a Taurus 450 (2 inch, 17 oz 45 LC) with a 38 snubby as the occasional bug, although I shoot my G23 much better.
Go figure...

OUCH!
My hand hurts just thinking about it!

On topic: If I'm dressing for the day and I put on the holster (IWB or OWB) it's a Yost 1* Colt Compact. If I'm just running out....yeah, either the Dick Special or the Python snubbie goes in the pocket.

But if I have to put on a holster, it's always the .45.

Actually, maybe due to the ribbed grips and porting, it's pretty comfortable to shoot. The 260 grainer handloads I carry in the 'woods' kick some, but my social load, 225 gr Winchester Silvertips, is pretty pleasant.

Well as one can see, weather can make a difference in choice... :D

Where I am, (way south Arizona) the high today will be in the middle 70's (no snow for Christmas) but the low tonight will be down to the middle 30's.

That, and the potential threat level will govern what I have. A short in-town errand is different then a drive out into the rural areas on back roads at night. Often there will be a larger handgun in the car, and a smaller snubby on my person. At other times both will be big... It all depends on the circumstances.

Yep - Read the same article, reminded me of myself. What I carry more often than not is my S&W 340 in a pocket holster. Twelve ounces, .357 power, absolutely brutal to shoot.
