I am guilty. Yep...I carry a snubby.

Thanks for all the replies.

I should have said...I am 6'4" and run about 400lbs. I can, and have concealed my 6" Model 29 and my 6' Colt Python. It is just a matter of...choices.

I could just as easily grab my Glock 26 or 27. It just seems like the snubby is an "old pal".

We are all pretty gun savvy guys, or else we wouldn't be here. I just wonder at the irony of most of us having true fighting handguns, such as tricked out 1911's, Glocks, Sigs, you add your favorite here...and yet so many of us grab the little wheelie.

My wife laughs at me when I am rummaging through my big gun safe, and pull out a pistol I "forgot" I had, or haven't seen in months. She says I have "gun-related-alzheimers". I rotate guns into, and out of my small gun safe where I tend to keep a few carry guns...but that darned little snubby is always there.

Like Colonel Cooper said of the J-Frame .38...."It's a great gun to carry when you're not carrying a gun!"

Oh well....I guess half the fun of having guns is having choices.

I am headed to the grocery store again to get the rest of the stuff the wife forgot to send me to the store for last night...I am making the choice NOW to carry a 70 Series Commander, and 2 spares. That danged .38 ain't gonna get me again!:neener:

Anyway, Walt Rauch...about the only good thing left in HANDGUNS was talking about how we, as gun toters, talk .45, shoot 9mm, and carry a .38 snubby.

I realized I am guilty of that too.

I LOVE my 1911's, but stopped carrying them because they weigh a ton, and dagummit, Glocks are lighter, and reliable, and accurate, and add your own reasons here.

Is Walt Rauch and I the only two guys guilty of this?

Yes you is. My carry guns are:

1. Colt CCO.
2. Springfield V10 Ultra Compact
3. Delta Elite
4. Norinco Nickel plated Government.

They are all reliable AND accurate. A good belt and holster are all you need to carry them comfortably.

I don't even own a 9mm or a 38snubby. But if I could find a nice Dick Special I'd buy it.

Yeah, I have a Detective's Special too. I just don't carry it....for...hell, I don't even know why.

And, I make leather holsters for sport, concealment, and western SASS guys....so, my philosophy is A GOOD GUN DESERVES A GOOD HOLSTER. I carried for 12 years professionally, 2 in uniform, and 10 years as a fed.

Now that I am an old (38) retired fart with a pension and two bad legs from a line of duty injury, I still carry every day, everywhere. I can carry what I want...I was simply observing that Rauch was right. Many of us talk .45, shoot 9mm, and carry a snubby.

Maybe I will get my Bren Ten out of the safe and carry that for a while...

it can make concealed carry a bit difficult in the summer months, unless you want to drown in your own sweat just walking to the car. good thing i've got the kel-tec p3AT, and i'm about to buy a Kahr.

This is why, in south Texas, I am guilty, too. :D Lots of times I just pocket a .380, but my baby 9 and my snubby work under a T shirt IWB. I never carry my .45. It prints under a T and it's not as light and comfy, either.

I don't dress for war, just want something just in case, ya know? I do practice with 'em and carry most of the time, though. Just ain't into totin' cannons around. Rather carry something made to carry that I also have confidence in. I might not shoot IDPA with 'em, but they shoot straight, function 100%, and I'm much better than average with 'em.

If I lived in a high crime county, I might dress for battle, but I don't. It's a rural area. My snubs are pretty handy on the place or out and about when I might have occasion to shoot a bunny or a snake or a wild dog or something. The revolvers are more accurate than the compact autos. That's one thing I like about 'em.

If I was going into Phoenix proper, I carried the Glock 37, and a pair of spares.

Like, say, the Circle K at Van Buren and 27th Ave? You might want a whole lot of spares. But, again, while it certainly is Phoenix proper, it definately isn't proper Phoenix. :)

Or any Circle K in Maryvale for that matter!!!

Sean,
I too am guilty. I often slip my Taurus 85 into the pocket to go to the Circle K in Buckeye.

Subbies?

Heck - two guns I carried during the Rita evac were my Glock 19 and my SP 101 in 3" .357.

Why? Both went BANG! if the trigger had to be pulled and bother were concealable. The SP is a tad too heavy for pocket carry but on a belt in a Kramer gunleather holster its just fine in pretty well ANY mode of dress.

I don't care what anybody says - 5 shots of .38 spl (what I usually carry in my Ruger) plus maybe a backup speedload will get you out of anything but the most "doomsday" of scenarios.

They take practice, but anyone who says a snubby isn't a fighting handgun is kidding themselves.

I've gone the other direction. Once I got a Glock 26, I pretty much stopped carrying anything else. For me, it works on the belt, in my pants pocket, or in my waist pack when I exercise. Also works fine as an ankle gun, though I never carry that way. Since I also live in the Phoenix area, I don't need a gun for an overcoat pocket, which would otherwise be my sole justification for carrying a small revolver.

My J-frame is now a safe queen. Disagreeing with Walt Rausch is nothing new for me, though. :neener:

I"ve always loved that talk45/shoot9mm/carry.38 snubbie saying, because its so true.
Take me for example:
Because I'm a career prosecutor, I've seen clear evidence that the 4- calibers are superior to 9mm's, yet...I'm looking at 9mm plinkers right now...and I've carried snubbies for years (my latest is a S&W 340PD 10.8 oz .38).
A .38 is so easy to throw in your pocket...and walking through a dark parking lot, you know you don't even have to take it out of your jacket pocket to fire off a round. Just point it and shoot. Now that's comforting.

I have many handguns. My 1911 is a Kimber CDP Pro so weight really isn't a factor. I have a BHP that I've had for thirty years. Both these guns fit me great just sticking them down the middle of my back. But yep guilty as charged I have a 638 S&W that is my main carry gun. Call me old fashion I don't care but there is nothing more reliable or easier to shoot than a revolver. Pull her out and start blazing away. J frame Smiths will go down in history the same as the Peacemaker did. Yeah when I am dressing skimpy I use my P32. Go forth young man and fear no more. Merry Xmas
Jim

Although my Glock 27 is my main off duty/bug, I often carry my old model 36 snubby 38spl with +P federal SWHPs. I don't feel undergunned with it. It is the easiest grab and go gun I own except for the NAA 22magnum revolver I carry as a second BUG for up close and personal grapling. For an old fat cop like me, there is just something about a snubby that is hard to explain.

You are sooooo old fashion. :neener:

And Happy New Year.

The aforementioned Taurus 651. Took 1 day carrying to become a top-2 favorite for CCW.

I like this thread

I thought I was the only one on this board that was too lazy to carry a big gun.

A .38 on your hip is better than a .45 in your safe......
a ton of Bad guys have fallen victim to the .38....
I usually carry a 5 shot(sp101)...but then I start watching TV and start thinking I need more rounds:scrutiny:
so far I haven't needed any(thank God).
Like I say at IDPA when I shoot my Rossi 2" ...."anybody can shoot a 4" gun,it takes a REAL man to shoot a snubby.";)

Anyway, Walt Rauch...about the only good thing left in HANDGUNS was talking about how we, as gun toters, talk .45, shoot 9mm, and carry a .38 snubby.

Walt carried and shot them all. Years ago, at Target World, he would show up for an evening IPSC match and shoot the same gun that he carried all day and that changed from match to match. His attitude, as I remember it, was that you should be able to shoot any gun you pick up, not just your super-duper, golly-gee-whizbang, fully tricked out race gun held in a levatation holster (actually, those days predated levatation holsters).

My BUG/snubby is a 2" Model 10. Main carry pieces are still "snubbies" - 3" K-frames, either a LS-65 or a 66-2.

A lot of shooters I know personally choose hardware based upon their activities/plans. I'm afraid I fall into the same group. Going to a bad neighborhood for work reasons...Glock 19 and multiple spare mags. Walking across the street to McDonald's to grab some lunch, the snubbie. It's convenient, easy to carry, comfortable, and can do the job if you practice enough with it.

For Sure; Carry an SP 2.25" DAO in 357. Most of the time with a Colt CCO running a close second. The CCO goes a couple ounces heavier than the SP but it carries 3 more rounds of 45. Both are carried IWB 9 months out of the year.:)
