I have gone rimfire crazy

I doubt very much that we will see decent .22lr ammo at $.04/rd again.

In fact I am stocked for life. A good thing since now that the US treasury is cranking out trillions rampant inflation that is worse than the '70s is darkening the horizon.

Plenty of cows and hogs on the farm. In fact some of them are being euthanized. The reason the meat racks at the stores are bare is a supply chain issue. My point is that our "system" is not nearly as robust as we might hope.
Welcome to the new abnormal.
Pessimistic people always look at the bleak side of life. When things are bad, they look for the worst. When things are really bad, they see the end of the world as we know it. When they hit rock bottom, they give up.
When things are bad, I look at how things can get better. When things get really bad, I do my best to help things get better. If I were to hit rock bottom, they can’t get worse, they can only get better.
Maybe we won’t see $.04 a round for 22 ammo for some time, but I just did a quick check and you can get 22 ammo right now for $.048 a round.

But then the pessimistic people will say, “ OMG! That’s almost a penny more a round.” But then for some, an extra $4 for 500 rounds is the end of the world.

When I pack for a big climb I always throw in a rain jacket no matter how blue the sky is.

It is not being "pessimistic". It is being wise and prepared.

If my predictions don't come true I am not hurt, and if they do I am ready.

But I am less of a rimfire fan than I used to be, although one of the ranges at my ranch is specifically devoted to it.

So what is the cleanest brand or in the case Of Winchester .22 LR the cleaner SKU? I had a S&W 22A and the only thing I didn't like about it is that the firing pin spring would get fouled up and would have to keep very clean. I even took it apart at the range to clean that part.

I was using Winchester bulk .22 ammo. Either 500 round pack(Walmart) or the standard 50 round box.

Speaking of rimfire cartridges... Considering that some rely on .22 LR pistols for protection, which top shelf ammo are considered the best for ensuring that the gun goes bang when trigger is pulled?

Well, I think the best readily available ammo is CCI. The upper line stuff. Mini Mags, Velocitors, Stingers. For personal defense, I'd go with the Velocitors. They've shown good penetration in meat for me. Still, we're talking about rimfire. I was shooting through a box of CCI Mini Mag 40gr solids yesterday and one failed to go off. The second time in my life that has happened with a CCI rimfire round. The point is that it does happen and more often than it does with all centerfire cartridges. It is for this reason alone that anyone that knows anything about guns might go for a .25 auto instead of .22. Not because it's a better round (it isn't) but because of the reliability.

With my dad, he uses a .22 because he can't use any other handgun. I just built him an AR22. He keeps that stoked with 25 rounds of Velocitors. I've also been "training him." When it goes click when it should have gone bang, I have him reaching up to the charging handling and racking it. Don't look at it, don't think, just chamber another round.

i’ve always been rimfire crazy i suppose. as i age rimfire shooting has become even more pleasant. i do still regularly shoot 38sp and 380acp too, as these two calibers are my centerfire ccw handguns, but if i’m looking for uncomplicated fun i shoot 22lr, usually out of a ruger sr22. in fact the one handgun that i generally travel with now is a ruger sr22. i get way more pleasure out of a brick of 22lr, than i do from a 50 round box of any centerfire. for a rifle i love to shoot a scoped marlin bolt action 17hmr, a real zinger of a piece. for those of us of a certain age, we grew up shooting 22lr in nra clubs, boy scouts, ffa, 4h, the woods behind the house culling the herds of fallen pinecones... shooting 22lr was simply a rite of passage into adulthood, like wrenching on a car, that was part of america’s golden age.

Hell, I have one safe devoted to 22s and can’t fit all of them in it.

You store them like that to keep oil from running from the receiver's into the wood?

I saw this post the other day and it caught my eye that all your rifles were upside down and just happened to read somewhere that it's good practice to keep from spoiling your wood. Was just curious if that why you store em like that....

I guess I’ve gone crazy to. I just picked up a Ruger MK iv and a 10/22 today. With those and my others my grandson and I plan on having a blast this summer.

Nope. They are stored upright and inverted. Helps to get more in the safe.
When storing guns with wood stocks, you should make sure that you wipe them down and not leave a lot of oil in the action.

I have found across the board that CCI makes the best and most consistent .22LR ammo. Reliable, accurate, and clean shooting (especially with MiniMags and Standard Velocity), I have gotten the best bang for the buck with CCI in all of my guns.

Same here. CCI Stingers and Mini Mags, I cant recall a bad round out of thousands of rounds shot. They have gotten expensive, I still have some I bought like 12 years ago that I think I paid around $6 per 100rd box.

I just got in another case of Aguila 40gr lead round nose, standard velocity. $23 a brick plus shipping. This stuff shoots good. I also just picked up several boxes of Federal Blue Box from Academy for like $23 a box. My dad is old school and likes the thought of hollow points. For me, I'll plink with my dad at whatever distance he wants to, but when I go out and shoot, I tend to do 100 yards, or more if I can, and high velocity just won't do for that.

So what are the folks here opinion on solid 40 grain high velocity .22 LR?
