:)As the title says I heard somthing that nearly made me hit the ground and die. The storie starts today about 5:00 pm when the boy got home from school. He had a storie he just had to tell me. So I sat down to listen to his tale. And was I ever informed on things. Take it back he and I were both informed. Apperantly he had a conversation with a freshman in his ROTC air rifle comp class and it revolved around guns and ammo. Any way I learned that the M-1 was made in a dark prision cell where all John Garand had was a dull rusty pocket knive, worn out files, bed frame for the stock and a sewer pipe for the barrel and the best part is he whittled 30-06 shells out of :what:scrape wood. The end of this story gose and the U.S. military like this design so much they let him out. I asked the boy if he asked the kid if he had ever stipped one apart. He did and the kid never has. And apperantly the 270 winchester will not kill a deer the 30-06 is the only thing that can. Another thing is that when I go bear hunting I need to use a sawed of 12 gauge with buck shot and that will kill any bear at :what:100 yards. Funny I did not know I was doing all this wrong. NOT! Just wanted to share this little bit of humor with everyone just to see the generaly reactiom.

The M1 Carbine was conceived of and invented by David Williams while serving a prison term for killing a federal officer during prohibition.

There was a movie made about it in the 1940's that starred Jimmy Stewart titled "Carbine Williams." The movie sometimes airs on the Turner Classic Movies channel and is worth watching.

Truck axle was the barrel in the movie I think. Not a bad movie when I saw it. Don't remember it that well.

So, regardless of whether or not it was John Garand (whom I don't believe ever served any prison time) or David Williams(whom I know nothing about) someone let a convict in prison design and build a firearm?

I think Williams designed only the short-stroke gas piston, though Winchester incorporated this idea into the M1 carbine.
