I just over paid for primers

LGS around here is finally in stock after almost a year. At $90/1K so $60 would be a welcome price. Thankfully I saw it coming early so I grabbed a bunch of every type I use before the panic took over, so I'm good for a while yet.
It was tempting to sell some when they were going for $300 but I refuse to be a part of the problem and a shyster.

$60 isn’t bad. My LGS (in Tennessee) had single (100 ct) trays for $7.50 each, limit 2. I’m a regular so they said I could get more, but didn’t want to be greedy so got 4…I’m low on SPP so an extra 400 was welcome for $30. Expect that things will settle in around $50 or so after the madness wanes. I’d have jumped on $60/1000 for SPP or SRP.

The LGS just sent out an alert that they got in LRP and SPP. CCI
I’m out of SPP so I bought 1000 for $60.00
It’s cheaper than any I’ve seen locally and actually the only SPP I’ve seen locally.
I do feel like I caved and over paid a bit.

Feel fortunate at that price
Our LGS started at $64. Went in the other day $99 a brick for any primer. Didn’t buy any. I saw one person pick one brick up. But I’m afraid as they say “ The new normal “ ughhhhh

9mm loaded rounds are going for more than double price right now, $21.95 per 50 last I looked. I wouldn’t feel bad about 1000 primers for $60. And I wouldn’t be surprised if things get worse with some governments/areas forcing more lock downs due to variant delta, capa, beta, etc. And more supply chain problems can pop up at any time. I ordered powder from MidwayUSA and it took almost 2 weeks because of a shortage of hazmat drivers. I’m hopeful we’re in the clear but NOTHING will surprise me at this point. So a few primers at “ok” pricing is no big deal and might be a smart move.
Yes right now Arkansas is supposedly leading the pack in delta/Covid cases. Not trying to justify my purchase but I am somewhat nervous as to where we’re headed again.

I know this is old news to some, but for those who may not know how primers are made....

Here's a brief glimpse that starts at 3:48 and honestly I don't know why primers are (were) so cheap. Not complaining mind you, but unless something has changed they require hands on work and attention to detail to make. I cannot seem to find the full video, it showed a more in depth look at making primers than this abbreviated version.

I found out in that video the difference between standard primers and bench rest primers is just the person making them, as bench rest primers are made and inspected by a more meticulous and long term eagle eye employee. If I remember correctly they are also done in isolation to eliminate distraction, and because even wet the slurry is still explosive, just not as sensitive....

I saw primers yesterday in a local shop , folks were paying $ 100 per 1K . Three guys in line, all had primers in their hands . 3K limit , two of the three guys had their limit . Heard one say to another..." I bought the gun to shoot, not letting a few bucks stop me from doing it" .

We’ve been ok through this mess. I had plenty of ammo and components and really haven’t shot much either.
This last winter I happened on to a good deal on a progressive. Since then I’ve slowly been gathering what I need to load 9mm. I had a hard time getting shell plates but thanks to a couple good guys on this forum I found them at normal pricing.
I’m still lacking dies, powder and bullets. mom gonna order Lee 4die carbide dies soon.
the lgs has a decent stock of bullets but no powder yet.

We are already well off of the bottom, with prices of 9mm going back up. I screenshoted $19.95 per 50 on June 30th. We are now at $22.95 per box as of this morning. (All brass cased).

Can you go back and get another 1000 primers at $60? You might have found the low.

I can not. He held that one box for me. they were all gone by the time I got there. There were a few LRP left but I figure they’re gone now.

In today’s market $60 isn’t too bad. At least you were able to find some. Primers are non existent in my area. I stopped at a gun shop 2 hours south of me on my way home. They had three boxes of CCI large rifle bench rest primers at $140 per 1000.

Last SPP I found (laid my paws on) were about that with tax two months ago, Limit 500. Haven't seen any since...sounds like good news...

I do not think you overpaid for primers. Here my work buddies, guys in the league and myself are still ecstatic every time we get to pay $110 with ship and hazmat for a Limit 1 order of 1000 primers off MWUSA. And they haven't even been the Winchesters I prefer

Just paid $80/1000 at LGS for Federal SPP. Thats half of what I'd seen recently for Magtech at another shop. At $60 I'd have probably bought 2k as was getting down to my last sleeve on the shelf. Before this whole thing started, I was loading 9mm at about $0.10/rd with plated, or about $0.06 with cast. Now, plated is costing $0.25 to load, still better that paying $0.65 or better per round for factory

You did fine ,i would even dare to say that you scored a deal.I my neck of the woods primers are non existent .My buddy and i a few weeks ago went to every gun shop in our area looking , no primers at all .It has been like this for months.I was looking through some gun stuff i got from my father after he passed and was thrilled to find x4 100ct of cci LR primers made my week!

Definitely overpaid just like almost everyone else buying primers right now, but if you need them you need them. Things will catch up in a few months and prices will go back closer to $40-45 per 1k.

60 per 1k at the Lgs sounds pretty good in this climate. I gave up looking for months and now I have a little optimism. Glad to hear people are finding them on the shelf!

I bought a 1000 over time at CAL Ranch, (1 box of 100 per day), for an effective price of $60 per thousand. Considering I haven't seen primers on the shelf anywhere for the last 12 months, I am quite happy. Heck, I finally got to USE my press again. I rather badly overestimated how long my 'stash" would last...

Nature Boy brings up good points . We were paying 50 dollars per1k before for benchrest primers . I think if they stay around $ 75 people will be plenty happy . And like he says two people can barely go out for a good meal for the price of1k of primers .
