I wanted to say "Thank You" to everyone on this forum. I have asked some questions (rather dumb ones IMHO) and everyone has answered in a friendly way. It is nice to have a forum I can come to and learn all I can about the dark arts of Black Powder.

Now to everyone who just might be reading this: when you are considering buying a BP revolver, DO NOT be afraid to get a brass frame remington. People on several other forums will tell you that any gun that has a brass frame is junk. Here is my response: any gun you abuse and isn't cared for properly will end up being junk. That means don't hot rod your gun. If you take care of the gun, it will take care of you. Brass frames are a great economical way to get started into BP.

For self defense purposes, a brass frame gun will take care of business just as well as a steel gun. A $140 gun kills just as well as a $1,000 gun. IMHO, only those that stick their noses up at certain guns are snooty. :)

Okay, I'm done ranting. Just some info I wanted to share thus far.

First of all RC, you're welcome, and also thank you for recognizing the civility our BP forum displays to our members new and old. Rarely does a moderator have to intercede on this forum because of our civility and our tendency to stay on BP related subjects this is not universally so even on THR and I would suggest that the cause of our civility is that we are interested in advancing the popularity of our sport and the knowledge of the history of firearms.
I would suggest that the BP forum change the name of the forum to BP and Muzzleloading forum to better reflect the changes in the sport such as the introduction of blackpowder substitutes.
Lastly I see the blackpowder and muzzleloading sport as a wonderful mixture of history and experimentation with the added responsibility of one shot hunting.

Seem to be a lot fewer attitude problems on this board vs others. I think it's because everyone loves BP and refuses to be restricted to what BP they will own. Most wanna own them all. No Glcck/1911 wars, no Taurus/S&W wars, no Mossberg 500/Remington 870 just good chat and great info here. :D

Anyway, thanks for recognizing it. I don't know if I contributed, but you're welcome, anyway. :D

i totally agree about brass frames. i have a brass framed Remington and it's plenty strong! i love that pistol to death! the Remington design is nice and strong and can take frequent shooting. i found this forum to be a goldmine of information, there are so many people that have been shooting blackpowder for years, and so many wise people that share their wisdom and experience in this sport!

I used to have a brass framed 51' Navy back in the 80's, loved to shoot that thing along with my 60' Army & my NMA but a friend begged me for it so I let him have it.

+1 on Rogue Coder's comments about civility on THR and willingness to enjoy all things shooting. I don't really do message boards because I normally feel dumber after I log off. THR is an exception. I have offered more than my fair share of dumb questions with little advice to return (at least not yet :p).

I agree with all the above !! Especially for those who pick a brass frame revolver as a "starter" pistol. There aren't many sports that will let you get a reasonably priced tool that will perform as well as an expensive one to learn whether you like the game or not. Also brass WAS a well used metal in the firearm buisness back in the day.

Brassers are "Slick"

I agree!
Brass is naturally a bearing surface and things like the hammer operate really smooth on Brass Framed guns! My Traditions "Navy" .44 (?) is a real smooth cocker! Smooth as glass!
They are an economical starter gun too. This really helps promote the hobby for the newcomers.
Heck, I'd like to buy another Remington myself, this time with the Brass Frame cause it looks cool! Yea I know to load 15-18 grains of propellant with some filler. It's just a plinker as I have Steel Framed guns to get serious with...

Better grouping than my first run. At 15 yards, out of 12 shots, 7 hit the target. I am thinking that first, this IS my first pistol and second I was using Hogdgon "RS Select", which I know is an FFG powder.

Why? I didn't have any and my father-in-law gave me nearly a WHOLE 1lb can of it he had. It was their 50th anniversary stuff. How is that important? That was in 1996. He hadn't opened that 1lb can for 15 years and gave it to me.

Anyway, I plan on at the first of the month getting 2 boxes of rounds and 2 cans of Winchester #11 magnum primers and spending quite a bit of time at the range. I am dead serious on target practice and training with this pistol, the same way I was with my Winchester Model 94.

I would suggest .454 balls and Pyro P or 777 to start with. Pyro is dirty, 777 is relatively clean. Real BP would be nice but its harder to get.
The .454 may be harder to start into the chambers, but, the surface area of the ball that is in contact with the chamber walls will be greater, better snugger fit.

You seem like you are already addicted, wait til you realise that you have far too many Remmies and Colts, then you will start looking for Leach and Rigdon, Griswold and Gunnison, etc.. etc.. there are a lot out there to collect.
First warning, there is no such thing as a .44 Navy (.44 was army, .36 navy)

This IS BPAA, ya know, black powder addicts anonymous. :D We don't try to break your adiction, though. We try to encourage it. :D

I'm still waiting on my latest, a 5.5" '58 Remmy from Cabelas. It's been on backorder for over a month. When it finally gets here, it's going to be like Christmas! :D I'm sorta like a kid going "is it time to open the presents, yet?"

How much did a 4lb pack cost and where did you order it? Around here, 1lb of FFF is $20 off the shelf. I've been HIGHLY tempted to "roll my own", but am contemplating on if I can do it safely.

"my name is Levi and I am a BP addict"

people claim i don't party, well that's not true. i party with black powder and lead!!

on a side note this is my latest gun, a brass framed 1858 Remington.

1858Remmy.jpg

if pyrodex is too expensive i recommend Jim Shockey's Gold. it's pretty good powder IMHO and i shoot it in my Remington and my rifle. it's cheap too! i like it. nice low ignition temperature, i can use it in the pan of my flintlock and it lights most the time. i plan to get real black powder sometime. that should work a lot better i think.

It's not that I can't afford the powder. It's explaining the cost of powder to my other half. I am using a pound of Hogdgon "RS Select" that was given to me by my father-in-law. I suspect that no matter where, BP will always run about $20 per lb on average.

I completelly agree with you on first post.People on this forum are very hospitable. For one question that I put on thr,ppl made fun of me on other forums.
And for that brass frames,I had accident with it one time, and damaged my hand badly. But it was old rusty used ASM replica...But now I start thinking of buying one brass frame, because they are cheap, and they look SOOOOOOOO cool :D
