I love airsoft

I have two Airsoft AEGs (full-auto electric guns) - a FN P90 and a short barreled HK G3. I shoot them in the basement every now and then using a net "bullet trap".

It's kinda fun to have something you can shoot naked while you drink your first cup of coffee in the morning!

That's one of those rare statements that is both TMI and a damn good idea, both at the same time LOL

Just for example...
0.2g White BBs-It takes about 1 year for these bio bbs to completely dissolve. http://www.flyntairsoft.com/bi50ai0whbbs.html

Guests to our home get to try out an airsoft. The target is a metal squirrel on the post below the bird feeder that makes a satisfying ring when hit. When the "1911" is initially presented, the expressions are often priceless, but the shooting is always enjoyed.

The biodegradable BBs aren't that much more expensive , only ~25% more than normal ones. I don't know much about AEGs(automatics), as I only have a couple co2 pistols and a few spring powered rifles and a shotgun. The funnest airsoft gun I've shot(a couple AEGs included) is the UTG multi-shot shotgun.

so whats a good airsoft 1911 so I can practice idpa/platematch/uspsa shooting in my upstaris?!?!?

Arnie's Airsoft used to be a good site for researching airsoft stuff - I think they're still around, but I haven't been there in a few years. Another site I remember as (IIRC) Redwolf Airsoft...

Actually, for airsoft 1911s I would highly recommend the WE 1911 singlestack tactical. A true player's gun. Very hefty weight and heavy recoil (both good things in airsoft!). Oh yeah, and Novak style 3-dot sights. http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_25_130&products_id=2114

I've played with the Western Arms guns a few times but they are so expensive, they are PLASTIC, and the mags run $50 a pop. Only if you're a collector. But they are the ultimate in detail and class.

My personal favorite: http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_25_63&products_id=187 . I always use mine to scare the newbies. The ROF is nightmare-inducing.

What FPS and ammo density are recommended? The heavier ammo is more accurate, but is there a downside?

heavy ammo is slightly more resistant to drifting off due to wind, and in upgraded guns allows you to shoot farther out. Unless your gun is upgraded with a stiffer spring or bore up kit, you likely won't see any improvement by going from .20 to .25/.28, and may actually see a decrease in range. Most if not all stock AEGs are made to be used with .20g BBs, but many will actually do just great with .25s (or .23s, if you can find em)

I have a couple of SIG P229 gas guns and use them a lot more than I first thought I would. Great year round practice in the house, both targets and the kids, and in/outdoors with force on force with the kids. The guns fit all my holsters and spare mags in their own carriers, so its pretty realistic except for the "boom". The gun cycles and reacts just like the real thing for the most part. They are more than accurate enough out to surprising ranges. I can shoot 30 yards across my back yards and put 6-7 out of 10 into the one inch holes on my burn barrel with my electric MP5.( I just wish they made that in a gas gun.) I can easily make good hits on people with the P299's at the same distance and further.

You can easily make a backstop/trap out of a sheet of insulation (the blue foam stuff) for in the house. I just cut out the "kill zone" from head to COM on an average target, so the pellets pass through. If you miss the kill zone, the pellets will stick in the foam. I stapled a towel to the back and left the bottom open. A small tray at the bottom collects the pellets.

Looks like this.....

It amazes me how much some of these airsoft guns cost, as well as how much people will put into their gear. It isn't uncommon to see someone show up at a skirmish wearing $2000+ worth of gear, from boots to foam-filled suppressor. And these airsoft smiths can make a good wage tuning and customizing other people's guns. So a private machine shop for an airsofter doesn't sound crazy to me.

I think airsoft is great in that it teaches the social skill of teamwork and communication (if you screw up you die!) as well as honing your shooting skills under "stress". Sure, it may not feel like being in a real firefight, and the techniques may not be the same, but it comes close at times.

I've always wanted an airsoft Galil, but they cost as must as a real one! :what:

I recommend .20g for indoor use and .25g for outdoor use. The .25s have less wind deflection and better stability at farther ranges for more accuracy, but at the cost of slighty less initial velocity.
