I believe that 99.9% of all LEO's on the road are fine upstanding Officers. It is that .1% of those that a person has to be aware of.
This sentence posted by one of our valued forum members, in a previous post about having to disarm during a traffic stop just rubs me wrong.
To me it is NOT being ungracious, or complaining to ask if an Officer is stepping over the boundaries during a traffic stop, for seemingly no reason.
Yes, there are more than a few cry-babies that whine when they are "Dressed Down" by a LEO, after they have broken the law, and then are disarmed, but, to me, this did not appear to be the case.

But the officer in that particular thread was NOT stepping over boundaries.
We posted the exact Arizona statute specifically covering that incident.
The statute applies to officers taking custody of the CCW Permitee's gun during a stop.
The OP showed the officer that he was a CCW Permittee, the officer took custody of the gun.
Exactly as the law allows.


ON THE OTHER HAND
We had several threads about an out-of-control officer caught on dashboard cam in Dayton Ohio.
THAT was definitely over the top. Out of line. Over the boundaries. No excuse.


In the recent thread where the officer was following Arizona law,
it is good advice that you behave courteously and graciously.
But that was only offered as good advice,
you should always respond in accordance with the situation.
Use best judgment.

I'll agree in part with billybob, though I think the number isn't really accurate. While I've known a lot of good cops, I'd say far more than .1% of them are thugs. Most of the mindless bullies I knew in high school ended up in law enforcement, probably because they didn't see any other way to maintain their lifestyle in any other business.
Those who couldn't cut it as a cop usually ended up as a jail guard or some other uniformed position. When I drove armored trucks, we had quite a few wannabe cops among us, and the way they talked amongst themselves, I'm *very* happy they didn't make the cut.
Heck, we even had one who bragged about shooting a bystander through his windshield, and how the union was getting his job back (he was on administrative leave).

My point is that Joe Citizen needs to obey graciously when He is in the wrong, and tactfully stand his ground, when He is correct.

Officer safety is the first thing taught at the academy. Nobody is going to win an argument with a LEO, whose first concern will be for his own safety. It was not necessary to disarm the driver, but the LEO has no way of knowing for sure.

i have no problem with officer safety.....

what gets me is the officer who treats EVERYONE (especially legall CCW-er) as though they had just robbed a bank, stabbed an old lady, and stole cookies from marines......in the name of "officer safety".

respect needs to be EARNED.......and when all people hear are stories of cops treating people like crap.....how exactly do you expect them to meet cops with open arms?

"bad cops" should be a FAR greater concern to their department then they are to the people........because that one "bad cop" has the ability to turn the public against the ENTIRE police force....making everyones jobs more difficult.


"bad cops" must be dealt with, and face more scorn and ridicule from those they work with....other wise they are just making a bad situation worse.

you want people to show police respect.........show them you are worthy of it......and show them whos best interest you really have at heart.
