I think that the average joe trying to do an illegal conversion rarely if ever shoots his contraband. I know some folks can get out to land that NO ONE is close enough to hear gunfire, but most are within earshot of someone. I have never shot my mgs out in the woods without an official responding to an "automatic gunfire" call. I think that the vast majority of the full auto shooting you see on the 'toob is being done by legal owners. There are THOUSANDS of us out there that own legal transferable NFA.
Never heard of an additional $50 for a background check. Thats one of the things done, when you file, by the ATF/FBI. Maybe its a silly state specific thing but doesnt happen here in Mn. You can get into an mg fairly cheap (3 or 4 k seams cheap for a mg when folks spend 500 bucks on a glock)
Anyone who hasnt screwed up and has the wherewithall to, find a CLEO who will sign, or, create an entity that circumnavigates that requirement can own an mg. EVERYONE should. Excersise a right or lose it.
