and I think it is, why have there not been more variations on this theme. With the exception of the Marlin Papoose I do not know of any other. I was working on a friend of mines AR-7, and was thinking that a breakdown bolt action would be just the ticket, and would avoid the jamming problems that seem to plauge the design. So are there any other breakdown .22's out there?

True, but the Henry is just a copy of the AR-7. I would like to see the breakdown, screw-on barrel concept tried with other action styles.

Is that a breakdown 10-22? Who makes the stock?

Feather's AT-22 is a breakdown. Works fairly well and fits in a standard briefcase. :)

so far, no one...

I am waiting for the packer Stock to arrive to make it. I started a thread over at rimfirecentral.com and Harry Tuttle was cool enough to photoshop me a pic based on my drawings.
I just could NOT get the idea out of my head. So i bit the bullet and am going to sacrifice the packer to the rpoject.
I hope to post pics of the completed gadget really soon.
I'll post a link to the thread in a sec.

Also, I tried to download a free trial of photoshop but there wasn't one that ws compatible with my lowly Windows 98 Operating system.
I tried.
But I may be hitting HT up again sometime in the future!

I read, long ago, the original Air Force survival rifle version of the AR-7 was a bolt action in .22 Hornet.

Yes, it was. They also had some .22LR versions too.

Unfortunately, the 22 Hornet version had a 14" barrel, making it illegal outside the military.
I don't know the specs on the 22LR.

Not illegal, just subject to a $200 tax. Shorts barrelled rifles are NFA toys, but completely legal after paying the tax.

Browning 22 auto is a break down.
Norinco TD 22 is a less expensive copy.
The Savage 24 22LR/20GA is a better deal yet as a survival weapon.

Who said the AR-7 was a good idea ? :p

Sound idea, light weight, collapsible .22 survival rifle, but poor execution.

Seems to me that a bolt-action .22 would be more appropriate for a survival hunting rifle...you won't necessarily need instant follow up shots on small game, and a bolt action has less things to break and take care of over a long period of time.

22rf Breakdown..

Marlin 39A..Take-down capability..proven design..clean from the breech

Rossi pump action..same as above, but smaller and lighter

Use 22 Short subsonic ammo..quieter than my 17 cal RWS air rifle.

salty.

the only ar-7 i've played with was a jam-o-matic POS.

I had one, made by Charter Arms, back in the 1980s. The first time I shot it the action (recoil) springs got tangled and messed up. It never was very reliable. A bolt action AR-7 .22LR would, as you say, make more sense.

I wouldn't mind having another one though, to tinker with.
