If you could only have ONE firearm, what would it be?

A 16" battelship gun. If the target is too close, just the muzzle blast from a "blank" would kill it.

No, really, a Cobb MCR. With wells and uppers for a varity of calibers.

One Gun

For home defense....my Mossberg 500 Tactical with copper jacketed sabot slugs or good 00 buck shot......for out and about "on the town", my dearly beloved Sig P220 with Tritium Night Sights.....

Shotguns are just SO versatile. Often times when I get out of my cruiser I have the choice of my AR-15, my Shotgun, or just my sidearm. My logic? Shotgun every time. Why? Because I'm still going to retain my sidearm as a "backup", the shotgun can be loaded with just SO many different types of rounds (rubber ball, flash-bang, buck, bird, slug, etc.) I shoot a ton of injured deer/moose and the shotgun works EVERY time (very humane), can be good out past 150/200 yds. with the right ammo, can support a light/laser/combo, red dot or low magnification optics, etc., etc., etc. Don't get me wrong, I love ALL my guns for varied reasons.....but for the "all around" award, my shotgun wins every time!!!

Well, i'll change my choice. An Ar15 with a .308 scoped upper, .223 24" barrel upper with a scope and bipod, and a midlength .223 upper with an eotech and BUIS. Satisfies all roles for me.
I'm pretty sure that a .308 upper won't fit on a .223 lower because of the magazine size, among other things. Plus, an AR10 lower is just beefier. So really, you have to settle on one caliber or the other.

I assume that we have to answer the question from our personal inventories? If so, it would be a tossup between my Model 29 .44 magnum, or my scoped AR Varmint rifle supplemented with my holo-sighted A4 upper. Either choice would do just fine for a broad variety of situations.

My 12 Ga shotty. The most likely cause for this scenario is a total breakdown in the fabric of our society. For those who seek to attack the unarmed, they'll pass me by. For those who will attack any and all, why would I care if they see it? As far as "up close and personal", if every stranger is a threat, no one except close friends will get close to me.

Remember, the OP only limited the number of guns, not the amount or variety of ammo. In that case, no other platform matches the shotty for utility.

Just reading this question gives me the shakes, but I'll play. Like many others have already said, I'd have to go with a 12 ga. pump shotgun. Imagining some insane future law that only allowed each citizen to own only one "firearm" ultimately I'd probably go with either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870p, with multiple barrels, stocks, and loads to choose from to configure the gun differently as the situation demands:

  • 18.5" barrel for homeland defense
  • 28" barrel with screw in chokes for bird and small game hunting
  • 24" rifled slug barrel with a good scope for large game hunting
  • Pistol grip or collapsible AR type stock for tactical situations
  • drop comb stock for bird and small game hunting
  • high comb stock for rifled slug barrel with optics use.

While the shotty is not ideal for every situation, in the right configuration you can make do pretty well. It would probably reside bedside wearing the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip or AR type collapsible stock configuration most of the time, until the situation called for a reconfiguration.

Well, I would have to know WHY I could only have ONE gun.

I noticed a lot of posts advocating the 12 gauge. Yup, lot's of versatality and plentiful stocks in stores. BUT, I don't want to carry any significant amount of ammunition if I have to walk. For those advocating it, consider carrying 200 rounds of ammunition.

The big question is WHY one gun. If I had to imagine a situation where I could ONLY have one gun, I would imagine a situation where I had to be mobile, and that would encompass a long arm and a sidearm. The "What two guns would you take in an emergency?" question seems more specific.

So, if you could only have ONE gun, and you didn't get to have a room full of ammunition to fall back on, what would it be?

Personally, if I can only have one, mobility would be an issue and a .22LR would certainly rank high in versatility, ability to scrounge ammunition, and ability to carry a reasonable amount of ammunition.

I think I might go with a g20. I don't have bears where I live, I could fire 10mm light(.40S&W ballistics) for self-defense, and pick up a .22 conversion kit for practice.
(Unless CCW was banned in the hypothetical, then I'd have to go with something else.)

Col. Wesson took every species of north American game with a N-Frame .357 Magnum.

I figure it's good for two legged critters as well.

Mine is a 28-2.

Only ONE gun?!!??

Only one gun huh? http://www.thehighroad.org/images/smilies/confused.gif A friend of mine and I have been playing this same game for a while. With no other info about situation and no limit on ammo I'd have to go with the 12 gauge shotgun, especially with the advances in ammo technologies.

However if I was in an urban survival situation I'd say the AK47, If I was in an suburban or wilderness situation I'd have to have an M-14.

If I'm limited to amount of ammo, I'd take my Ruger 10-22.

Yup, that's about it.

I do love my 357 combo CCW revolver and lever action though!! http://www.thehighroad.org/images/smilies/shocker.gif
