If you could only have ONE gun to cover all of YOUR needs, what would it be?

I gotta second the drilling for versatility. Probably a pair of 12's over an '06. You could even shoot .224's out of sabots in the '06 tube.

Can't believe I am the first to mention this, but if I could only have one gun, it would be a Thompson Contender/Encore with both stocks and a pile of barrels. Rifle, Pistol, anything from .22-45/70. Able to kill anything from a field mouse to an elephant.

45wheelgun, you beat me to it.

Amen :D

870 with plenty of bbls. and accessories. Goes from concealable (Pistol grip under a trench coat) to Deer gun/Bear protection. (not to mention BG's. ;) )

In a perfect world...

I'd probably take an MP5/10.

Why?

As an LEO it'd provide me a platform capable of taking longer, more accurate shots than my sidearm... but would be a compromise from carrying around a rifle or carbine. The 10mm caliber would also produce the best ballistics out of a weapon of such size - even at longer distances.

Select fire - adapts to the situation.

Cartridge - probably the best pistol caliber cartridge around.

Also - it is capable of many other roles... it can adequately take game the size of a deer humanely. It'd be great for recreational shooting *burp* and it is HK reliable.

Out of my firearms? I'd take probably my 11-87 with the buck barrel and the bird barrel. That right there is just about everything I need. If it's out of all the guns out there. Oh boy, i'll have fun deciding which one.

One gun?

To arrive at an answer I have to decide what guns are for. Guns can be used for the following:

- Hunting
- Leisure (target shooting, etc.)
- Personal protection
- Protection of home
- Protection of liberty

If I can have only one gun, I would want one that can perform most or all these tasks in a satisfactory manner:

handgun
Hunting – poor
Leisure – good
Personal protection – good
Protection of home - fair
Protection of liberty - poor

shotgun
Hunting – good
Leisure – fair
Personal protection – poor
Protection of home - good
Protection of liberty - poor

rifle
Hunting – good
Leisure – good
Personal protection – poor
Protection of home - good
Protection of liberty - good

In light of the above, if I can have only one gun, it would be a rifle.

I now have to decide what type of rifle, and what caliber. This really isn't as important as most people think. But if I had to decide on a type, it would be a bolt action, since it has the strongest and most reliable type of action. As far as caliber goes, I would want something common and powerful. I can only think of one that meets this criteria: 7.62 x 51 NATO (.308).

So there you have it... if I can have only one gun, it would be a bolt action rifle in .308. :)

for me it would be a Colt Government. I'm odd, I prefer a sidearm instead of a long gun, and I prefer 1911's to other handguns. So Colt it is.

Plus concealing a lever action rifle or a pump shotgun would suck ;)

10" M4.

Hmm. Tough Call for me. My 2 finalists would be my CZ97B or Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag.

Both big enough that CCW is almost out, but still doable. Redhawk could be used for hunting. the .45 would be a better choice for HD and CCW. Both are fun at the range.
Redhawk has 'First Gun' and 'Fun Gun' Bonus Points. .45 has cheaper ammo components on it's side. the 97B is more accurate too, at least for me.

These threads are always hard. I am going to interpret this as One Gun per House sort of deal, and that reloading supplies and things are still available, as well as other people still owning guns too.

In that case....I think I'd go with the Redhawk .44 Magnum.

CrossFire MK or Derringer in .410

CrossFire MK: combination gun 12gauge with four shot tube mag and a .223 with a five shot detach mag below the 12 gauge barrel. That or a Derringer in .410.

.357, yes. Revolver, no

Ducktapehero beat me to it :)

A .357 lever gun, especially a carbine, is versatile enough to cover, hunting, self-defence, and even unrest/SHTF if necessary. A carbine in 16" is somewhat concealable (with a long coat). The 357, out of a 16" or longer barrel, reaches velocities close to a 30-30. I'm not sure I'd choose the Rossi I have, though. A Winchester, or maybe a Marlin, if I wanted to scope it.

I wouldn't feel uncomfortable with a shotgun, either. Obviously, though, a rack of more specialized firearms is better. :D

First I thought that "one gun" had to be my Glock 17L. I could use it for personal protection (albeit it's a bit on the large side) and home defense, while with 33rd mags and the shoulder stock attached it turns into a nice MP5k substutute.

Then I read Molon Labe's reasoning and have to agree that it's got to be a rifle. In my case I'll opt for my HK SL8.
