The Thompson was a little more expensive than most of the common fare but you got a good trigger, walnut, and accuracy without having to do anything to it. Plan on keeping this one.

Nylon 66? Who makes those now? I don't think even CBC in Brazil does anymore. I have had four or five over the years and never found one accurate enough to mention. yep, nearly always went bang. But would hate to depend on one to feed my family as it doesn't mater if it goes bang and the bullet goes somewhere other than where you want it to. Scoping that sheet metal cover seems something of a lost cause. I did it a few times. Great for an afternoon of shooting, but seldom holds zero when riding around in the trunk of a car or behind the pickup seat. Its a tube feeder so sort of clumbsy to load even with store bought tubes (there is a guy over on RFC's trading post offering some nice once right now) or old aluminum arrows..

550 and a floating chamber? Plan on finding someone's buried cache of 1960's "here comes da bomb!" shorts and longs? A lot of the Savage Stevens model 6 series will shoot s,l, lr and not have a floating chamber to gum up.

Yep there are a lot of fancier guns than the 10/22, some more accurate out of the box. Any that use a more bomb proof magazine? Nope. Any with the sort of support for basic parts, custom parts and accessories? Nope.

I like "the horde" of .22 semi auto rifles I have owned in the past and now owned. But honestly?

Then you need a Marlin 70: same as a 60 but detachable mag....I was going to vote for the 70, but then I remembered the best .22 I ever owned- an Armi Jager .22 AR lookalike clone. Italian made, superbly accurate and reliable. It finally broke the firing pin, but I ground down a hardened nail to replace it; worked like a charm.

Sold it to feed the kids back in ought-8, but if I could find another, ya that was the best.

Otherwise, Marlin 70.

Marlin 39 will shoot a shorts, longs and long rifles but it's not a semi auto or it might have been my top choice.

I'm gonna stick with my old 550-1 because of it's reliability, SLLR ability without a hitch, and also the amazing accuracy for an old inexpensive rifle. I also like the feel it has at my shoulder. There's better, prettier, and more costly, but I just happen to be really fond of this one for some reason.

I have my son's Marlin M60 (junk), my daughter's 10/22 (fat and stubby) and my wife's Marlin M81 bolt action (now there's a shooter). But you said only one. That will be my M290.

For a stock gun, it would be the Thompson/Center R55 Benchmark. Just put a scope on it and you are in business. This one has been threaded for a suppressor, so it is not entirely stock:



For non-stock, it would be one of the 10/22 family with a Volquartsen barrel and Magpul X22 stock, improved trigger unit etc. This is one such rifle which has a receiver milled by South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies here in the UK:



It's a shame the R55 is no longer produced, since it is a great rifle.

I just looked at one of those yesterday. I really liked it, but wasn’t ready to drop the $499 they wanted for it.

If it was clean it was steal. I have sold 95%98% gun without a scope for $600.

The Weatherby would be my pick backed up by a Browning SA-22.

Which butt stock angle do you prefer? The Carbine or the Rifle?

I think I prefer the rifle just a wee bit over the carbine,,,
I must scrunch up just a wee bit with the carbine,,,
The rifle hits the sweet spot of my shoulder.

I would say that you should find and fondl,,, eerrr,,, shoulder the 512 rifle,,,
You may or may not like it but you'll never know until you try one.

I think you'll be pleased with the way it feels,,,
I'm certain you'll be elated with the performance.

As far as semiautos go, it would be a Ruger 10-22. Take down preferred. Period.
Runner-up semiauto for a back packing application would be a Henry AR7.


However, my small game rifle is a Browning T-Bolt.

Yep I got one of each, the SA 22 is just plain sweet but the 10/22 is like a small block Chevy, more parts and accessories than you can shake a stick at.

Walther PPK/s. I know you specified rifle, but it's easier for me to have the Walther in a pocket or shoulder holster when working on the farm than a rifle in my hands.

My 22 rifle? A Winchester 69A bolt gun. Allowsme to use any length .22 from CB's to Stingers
