I've been accused of posting the dumbest thread ever (which I honestly didn't think was that stupid). This, however, COULD possibly be THE ONE, so let's just to get that out of the way. Please, I don't need anyone TELLING me this is the stupidest thread ever. You can think whatever you want...
If you came across a billion dollars, what do you think it would cost to buy one of every production gun model currently available to the general public in the United States and what do you think the cost would be? How many models would you have to store? I'm not talking about collector pieces (which is the direction I would probably go) but the sky is the limit to that, so in order to put a finite number to it, I would limit it to just current production guns.
Just glancing at S&W, 204 pistol models @ avg. $750 each, 116 revolver models @ avg. $1,000 each, and 43 rifle models @ avg. $1,000 each puts the price tag for S&W at about $324,000.
Extrapolate that out for the top 10 manufacturers brings the price tag up to $3,240,000.
The next 10 manufacturers, maybe producing half of the top 10 adds another $1,620,000.
Add another $1,000,000 for some gucci guns, (should cover it, assuming 100 to 200 guns running around $5,000 to $10,000 each.)
Maybe about 5,500 guns? Accessories for each, maybe averaging $500 each for another $2,750,000.
Then storage. My current safe would more comfortably hold about 12 guns and is about 6 sq ft of floor space. Allowing room to stand back and admire them, add another 9 sq ft of space. So, 12 guns, 15 sq. ft. of space, or 1.25 sq ft of storage per gun. I'm rich, so let's give them 1.5 sq ft. 5,500 guns would need 8,250 sq ft of storage. Let's give them a nice building at $300 per sq ft. - another $2,500,000.
So, I'm at a total of a little over $11,000,000 capital outlay. Maintenance, let's throw in $500,000 per year. Maybe $100,000 in ammo per year.
If you shot your guns 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, you'd only be able to shoot for 2,920 hours. That's about 1/2 hour per gun. Of course, you don't have to shoot them. You could spend all your time sitting back in your leather wingback chair, feet kicked up on the ottoman, reading reloading manuals while sipping a fine single malt, and glancing up every once in a while to admire your full line of Hi-Points.
Do you think my monkey math is close? Would you do it to feed your "addiction"? Sorry, I meant to say "hobby". With a billion, money wouldn't mean much.
My Answer: Yeah, that would be clear "No" to one of everything. I probably wouldn't even look at collector guns very hard, I would feel bad shooting something pure collector value. At some point, I wouldn't see the point (see what I did there). BUT, I can guarantee you, the number of guns I own would probably triple from the number I currently own and some of the ones I currently own would get replaced. Maybe an inventory of about 100 would be nice. For me, 200 would definitely be pushing it.
