I've been accused of posting the dumbest thread ever (which I honestly didn't think was that stupid). This, however, COULD possibly be THE ONE, so let's just to get that out of the way. Please, I don't need anyone TELLING me this is the stupidest thread ever. You can think whatever you want...

If you came across a billion dollars, what do you think it would cost to buy one of every production gun model currently available to the general public in the United States and what do you think the cost would be? How many models would you have to store? I'm not talking about collector pieces (which is the direction I would probably go) but the sky is the limit to that, so in order to put a finite number to it, I would limit it to just current production guns.

Just glancing at S&W, 204 pistol models @ avg. $750 each, 116 revolver models @ avg. $1,000 each, and 43 rifle models @ avg. $1,000 each puts the price tag for S&W at about $324,000.

Extrapolate that out for the top 10 manufacturers brings the price tag up to $3,240,000.

The next 10 manufacturers, maybe producing half of the top 10 adds another $1,620,000.

Add another $1,000,000 for some gucci guns, (should cover it, assuming 100 to 200 guns running around $5,000 to $10,000 each.)

Maybe about 5,500 guns? Accessories for each, maybe averaging $500 each for another $2,750,000.

Then storage. My current safe would more comfortably hold about 12 guns and is about 6 sq ft of floor space. Allowing room to stand back and admire them, add another 9 sq ft of space. So, 12 guns, 15 sq. ft. of space, or 1.25 sq ft of storage per gun. I'm rich, so let's give them 1.5 sq ft. 5,500 guns would need 8,250 sq ft of storage. Let's give them a nice building at $300 per sq ft. - another $2,500,000.

So, I'm at a total of a little over $11,000,000 capital outlay. Maintenance, let's throw in $500,000 per year. Maybe $100,000 in ammo per year.

If you shot your guns 8 hours a day, 365 days a year, you'd only be able to shoot for 2,920 hours. That's about 1/2 hour per gun. Of course, you don't have to shoot them. You could spend all your time sitting back in your leather wingback chair, feet kicked up on the ottoman, reading reloading manuals while sipping a fine single malt, and glancing up every once in a while to admire your full line of Hi-Points.

Do you think my monkey math is close? Would you do it to feed your "addiction"? Sorry, I meant to say "hobby". With a billion, money wouldn't mean much.

My Answer: Yeah, that would be clear "No" to one of everything. I probably wouldn't even look at collector guns very hard, I would feel bad shooting something pure collector value. At some point, I wouldn't see the point (see what I did there;)). BUT, I can guarantee you, the number of guns I own would probably triple from the number I currently own and some of the ones I currently own would get replaced. Maybe an inventory of about 100 would be nice. For me, 200 would definitely be pushing it.

Start with a large custom home with a high quality large gun vault room in the basement with custom display racks. Next to the vault, an indoor 50 yard range with quality air handling system and provisions for lead recovery from the backstop.
Add a home security system.
Now you can proceed with the dream inventory.

1Billion is gun????? lol
In your post about buying low cost guns, I got to thinking how much would it cost to buy one of everything. Not necessarily spending a billion on guns. That would just be crazy!:)

If you had a billion dollars, I think you could buy one of everything, and it would just be a drop in the bucket.

Why mess with the little stuff? If I had a billion dollars to blow on "guns", I would immediately buy land in Texas or another plains type state for a huge range and immediate acquire multiple howitzers, multiple tanks, a big stockpile of live artillery rounds, a Dillon M134 Mini Gun, an M2 and other assorted FA toys. Probably a nice retired military chopper I could mount the mini gun on for hog eradication holidays, eradicating hogs from the chopper looks pretty damn fun.

Would have to acquire some RPGs with a good amount of live HE rounds. Then at least half of whatever was left after the buying spree into acquiring enough ammo to feed all of those beasts for the rest of my life. Big storage facility and hire a few experts to maintain, repair and rebuild all of these for me. At least a few million into an ammo reloading facility, plus a warehouse of reloading components. Done.

I'm not talking about collector pieces (which is the direction I would probably go) but the sky is the limit to that, so in order to put a finite number to it, I would limit it to just current production guns.
There are precious few current production guns that I would want. Those few, I can easily afford now.

By necessity, then, an unlimited gun budget would go into older collection pieces. And even then, there's a practical limit to how much you can sink into it. I think that after a million dollars you would exhaust all realistic possibilities.

Then you would have to worry about how to store, display, and eventually dispose of all these pieces. You'd probably have to hire a full-time curator to help you keep them in order.

ok, I’ll play alone… I’ll buy $1 Billion in Ruger Stock, be a majority share holder and get them to bring back the .44 mag carbine

Looks like you would be able to do it. Currently their market capitalization is $959,000,000. You would have a measly $41,000,000 left to survive on, assuming the company had no profitability after you bought them.

That would be one very expensive .44 Mag Carbine. AND you'd still be able to buy 5,499 more guns and build your gun building AND still have $11,000,000 to survive on.:)

Screw the collectibles, I want shooters! Belt feds with semi loads of ammo would be a start.
Who would clean the guns afterwards? Or would you hire a whole crew of employees to do that?

Did you ever go to the Knob Creek Range event? The firing line with all the belt feds firing at once was physically painful to be near, even wearing ear protection.

There's a contradiction between spending money on guns (collecting), and high-volume shooting. When I was in the Pole Barn at Knob Creek, trying to make deals, I had to take breaks while the shooting was going on. Highly annoying, to say the least.

Realistically, if I had a billion dollars, I would buy ever senator and assemblyman in California to restore the same gun rights that America does. I'd just take a million or so for myself and toys and the rest
would go to hopefully frustrate and infuriate Gav Boy and AG Rob Bonta. Our state government here is easily in the top three most corrupt in the union so buying the politicians that come up with these insane
laws would be easy and quick.

I agree, the vast majority of current production guns are not on my list and if I had unlimited resources, I wouldn't waste my time or space with them, even if I could. My current list is very short, however, with essentially unlimited funds, my list does magically get bigger.:). However, my list is still relatively short and as you say, by necessity, it would have to get into collection pieces. But for me, collection pieces would be ones that I would feel OK with using. Someone else can have the unfired collector piece. I'll take the same model that's been fired. And then I'd get into a few machine guns.

I enjoy looking and planning and saving for the guns that are on my list. If I could easily afford them without negatively impacting my family vacations, I would have bought them years ago.

I billion would never be enough to buy a state full of representatives. I would hire someone to shoot for me. With that kind of money, who would have time to shoot.

could 1 Billion buy a Davie Crochet?

In this game - nope. Not currently in production and generally available to the public. And I don't know how you would use that for hunting deer. You would lose way too much meat - but whatever meat you could salvage would definitely be cooked. Using it on your own private land would significantly reduce available land for your use unless you had yellow booties.

in all seriousness, I bet that thing cost way more that $1Billion to develop and maintain

Yep! $1Billion to the 2nd Amendment Foundation! let them hire all the Lawyers to make a difference for DECADES

With that kind of money, I would be shooting a lot more than I do now. But I'd also be doing a lot of other things than I do now.

I suppose the body has a limit in how much of certain guns you can shoot. I know my shoulder feels it after a day with my 7mm RM. I would hire or pay someone to do some of the detailed maintenance for sure.
