Okay, you live in a place where they no longer allow carrying or poessessing a firearm. (I know, it is only a scenario, but I'd really like to know..)

If you couldn't have a firearm to protect your home, what would be your choice of a non-firearm weapon to defend your home and family?

Having trained in the unarmed martial arts, I guess I'd have to choose a pair of kukri's with a Tomahawk back up for CQB. My choice for a longer range weapon, would be a bow.

What would you choose?

A machete, a hatchet, a mace (the beating kind), a Gurka knife, or a chopping cleaver. One of those Cold Steel boar spears would be nice as well. What is the spirit of the bayonet, to KILL KILL KILL with cold blue steel. At least thats what drill sargent said  .

if a gun is absolutely out, machetti or hatchet is good.

a ball peen hammer with a leather wrist strap has been my companion on walks at night when i cant carry somthing better.

spear is good too. rather short with a long leaf shaped blade you can slash with like the zulu ones.

oh, and the quote 'come on you apes, you wanta live forever' was unknown platoon sergeant,1918.

least thats what it says first page of heinlein's book.

You did say specifically to protect my home, so that gives me a number of options that would not be available in other scenarios.

Before even thinking about a weapon, I want to take a number of factors into account. These include (but are not limited to):

1. Make it as difficult as possible for an intruder to get into my home in the first place. Planting thorny vegetation under/in front of windows, having tough, secure doors and locks, a well-lighted exterior with minimal dark areas through which someone can sneak, etc. all come into play here.

2. It's very important to minimize close-contact fighting between an intruder and myself and/or my family. Distance is your friend - at contact range, all an intruder has to do is make a lucky swipe with a knife or club, and someone will be badly hurt (or down and unable to protect others). Therefore, the interior design of the home should keep intruders away from myself and my family when we are most vulnerable (i.e. asleep). The sleeping areas should be secured from the rest of the house with gates, doors, or something similar, to prevent easy access, or to require an intruder to make a loud noise in getting through the obstacles, so as to provide warning.

Now, after that lot's been dealt with, we can get to weapons. I want weapons that will keep the intruder at a distance from me. A Cold Steel assegai or boar spear (centre and right, respectively, in the picture below), with a long shaft, would make an excellent choice in a corridor or narrow approach route, as I can keep the intruder several feet away from me.

Something like a Japanese sword would help for closer work - it's still long enough to keep a distance between an opponent and myself. For last-ditch work, a kukri, machete or something similar would be better than a short folding knife or hunting blade.

I'd also look hard at options such as a crossbow, sling, bolo, etc. - anything I could effectively use within the confined spaces of a home that could disable an intruder before he got to me.

I'd also make sure to train with my wife (and any kids old enough to be reliable in a crunch) to tag-team any intruder. While one of us keeps him busy and facing a threat, the other can stab, thrust, etc. from the side, or circle around behind him: or one can occupy him while the other uses a distance weapon to shoot or throw things at him. If there are multiple intruders, again, using the layout of the house to force them to attack one at a time, or no more than two at a time, acts as a force multiplier for us, and a force divider for them. One could throw some caltrops on the floor in the corridor to hurt their feet as they approach - although this might hinder one's pursuit of them as they leave! :D

There are all sorts of ideas and options to be explored.

Double bit axe or hatchet, A double bit axe, sharpened to a high degree, when used with one hand on the base of the handle and the other midway along the shaft will easilly split ribs, disembowl etc. You are also a lot less likely to raise red flags in LEO's mind than using exotic weapons

All of the above are good choices. A Louisville Slugger aint bad either if you have room to swing it.

Sounds good if you are assuming the attacker doesn't have a gun. I guess there is not much else good otherwise.
I would think a small cross bow would be good for short distances.
I like the spear in hallways. Need to practice with it enough to make sure some big guy can't just grab it away from you though.
If all sides have non-firearms weapons, you might consider a small shield as well. Can use it as a club if necessary.

I might have to take some Kendo classes or something like that myself.

Unfortunately, since the desire to take away guns stems from a basal desire to keep us wimpy, other weapons are usually banned as well... :fire:

This has gone on from time immemorial and I always remember the story of how Okinawa karate started..

Yeah, look at some of the talk in Britain.

One other thing to consider along those same lines. A valuable weapon may be a weapon that the attacker does not recognize as a weapon or a threat. Big mag-lights are good for this. A cane with a blade in it comes to mind.

A Katana for outside and a Wak for the inside, but better know how to use them or lose a leg.

# 1- light weight chain saw . A stihl or husky. People seem to be scared of them for some reason.

A dog. A true guard dog, one that will attack relentlessly on command. Other that, a can of oven cleaner, a t-ball bat, a little 2-3" dagger.

Charby

What was I thinking?! A chain saw- NO, NO ,NO ! What you want is a Paslode cordless framing nailer. Works on a fuel cell/battery, and will sink a 3" framing nail into a two X six. Semi auto, about 100 "round" capacity.

A big ABC fire extuighisher.
Axe handle.
Axe (if you're stronger).
Machete.

I'ld stick to things that are foe garden use. That's better in a gun phobic area. If you are in another country, do not take along. Buy in a local store!

I really love the chainsaw, but it might be a bit slow to start. It's sound will do more scare than a pump gun though.

It's a shame that gas chainsaws aren't very easy to start... although I'm sure I could get an electric one and a decently long extension cord.

I'd still have to prefer the bat though, or a katana.

Don't be seduced by the mysterious East.

In your home, without room for full power and full length slashes, you'd probably be better off with a good old Spanish-steel military rapier. Not the too thin modern fencing toy, nor the overly long duelists weapon, but rather a good 3 feet of double-edged, sharply pointed thrusting rapier with the ability to take off an arm if you have the room to swing it.

In a hallway or restricted quarters it owns the fight from contact distance to 10 feet out with a full extension lunge, throw in a main gauche dagger and you'll go through home invaders like cordwood.

:D

Watched 'Gladiator' the other night, and seem to remember this rotating crossbow with 4 bolts. :D

How about throwing a live snake on them?

Cutlass and dirk, boarding axe if needed. All held behind stout walls patrolled by a big ugly dog that likes to bark.

I wasn't that good at archery as a kid.

Oh yeah, baby! - I'd imagine firing one of those baby's up would have much of the same bowl voiding effect that racking a shotty's slide does... Probably moreso.

Polished practice in the martial arts is something they cannot take away or ban.

First, I suggest having a partner to help keep an eye on things at night.

This is my overwatch...Reno

Then I would personally prefer a kukri, Tomahawk or something similar. I would want something light enough to be quickly handled yet heavy enough to inflict substantial trauma.

I can understand a lot of people would rather have some sort of spear or long weapon to maintain distance. I am just afraid the fight would end up in a hallway or other confined space (Murphy's Law applies) and if the BG could advance inside the head of your spear it seems like it would be difficult to regain the advantage.
