I'm double pocket carrying now...any reason why I shouldn't?

To make a long story short, I fell in love with pocket carry some time ago as it's a perfect solution for oppressive central Texas heat and my limited experiences trying to conceal a full-size handgun in 100 degree+ heat went nowhere. After pocket carrying a S&W 638 (j-frame .38 revolver) for over a year...I've slowly begun to fully trust that my Kahr PM9 (sub-compact 9mm) is dead nuts reliable and so I'm beginning to pocket carry it as well.

Several days ago I had an epiphany...why the hell not carry BOTH at the same time.

My Setup
-Right Pocket (strong side): Kahr PM9 in right handed Uncle Mike's pocket holster
-Left Pocket (weak side): Smith & Wesson 638 in left handed Uncle Mike's pocket holster
-Two seven round magazines in belt carriers
-iPhone on belt holster
-wallet in back pocket

Anyhow, aside from the loss of pocket space, are there any downsides to "double pocket carry" that I'm missing? I've been rolling this way for about a week now and I really like it. I feel very well armed and having the revolver for backup on my weak side seems like a good idea.

If you like it, it's legal in your state, and you still have a place for your normal junk, keys, pocket knife, etc, go for it! A BUG is always a good thing, in my book.
 
None that I can think of, although the New York reload seems to make the extra ammo redundant. Having said that, it's your gunfight...

Well, as far as the legality there's no prob in Texas with carrying 2 guns, just as long as they're properly concealed.

Don't carry a pocket knife though, I'm sorry to say. I'm sure the merits of to carry or not to carry a knife would be a whole other topic. My car has push button start so the keyfob stays deep in my left pocket until I get home anyway.

I'd think a second gun would trump a knife, but there are a lot of things that I knife can do that aren't SD related that would make it useful too.

Seriously though, a small-to-medium locking folder with a clip could go in your waistband appendix carry-style and you'd never know it's there, FWIW.

Very true. But seeing some guys' carry setups (3 guns, od spray, knife and flashlight) I don't want to get into Batman utility belt territory either. Maybe a small folding knife at the bottom of a pants pocket under holster...or might that constrain my draw?
 
Nothing wrong that I can see with double pocket carry (I've considered it myself, but declined only because it wouldn't leave enough room for my other stuff). I am firmly of the school of thought that a pocket carried handgun should NOT share that pocket with anything else.

In our HCP classes, we advocate pocket carry as a very viable, low profile option with the major downside being inability to draw from pocket carry if your strong side arm was disabled. Your double pocket carry setup makes that downside a moot point. :)

Biker's probably on to something that a fully stoked J-frame would probably negate the necessity of a reload for the Kahr.

Maybe swap one of those reload magazines, and the space it occupies, for the knife ?
 
^ Good thinking. I only carry the reloads when in a situation where I can go with an un-tucked shirt, which pretty much limits that to weekends. I guess 7 rounds of +p 9mm at my right hand and 5 rounds +p .38 special at my left hand is enough for most social encounters I'm likely to find myself in.

I carry my keyfob deep down in the pocket, below the holster. That's really the only thing in either right or left pocket besides the guns themselves. Because I only need to be within 6 feet of my car to unlock the doors and start it up, I almost always go about my entire day without touching my "car keys" until I get home for the night. Might the keyfob interfere with a draw?
 
Wallet in back pocket is a potential problem. Pickpockets like wallets in back pockets. The pickpocket won't know you are armed, and being armed won't help if he is proficient.

Someone who goes into the city a lot, uses mass transportation, or needs to do a lot of shopping has a different set of concerns.
 
As long as you don't go to New Mexico. Last time I passed through there, they only allowed concealed carry of one gun at the time. But it was OK with them to open carry the other one...

I would relocate one of the two to a ankle holster so I could have easier access to one while sitting/driving, but that is just me. For a reason why not to, the only ones I can think of would be strictly because of inconvenience and personal preference.

Why not three, one in each pocket and an ankle gun?:neener:

On that point I might tend to agree. If he gets to the point where he needs to reload, when carrying two fully loaded weapons ... he is probably in wayyyy over his head.

When there's not a gun there, I carry a Gerber Fast Draw spring-assisted pocket knife IWB at 3:30. I clip it to my trousers and wear a belt over it so only a litle bit of the thin metal clip is showing. It is so comfortable I forget it is there and no one has ever noticed it.

I don't carry it so much as a weapon as a tool that could be used as a weapon in an emergency. I firmly believe everyone should carry a knife for ulility and preparedness purposes, wether they're willing to use it as a weapon or not. Ditto flashlights, but that's a whole 'nother thread.
 
Ok I think you should do this. 2 Kahrs each in high ride OWB holsters on left and right.

1 small framed revolver on each ancle....








A knive in your back pocket, A backpack with a 500 S&W magnum long barrel, 2 full size Glock 40s, 5 mags for each gun, and I guess a few smoke grenades. :evil:

What about a mid-leg holster underneath your pants while wearing baggy cargo pants. Cut the pocket out so you can reach it and then you can carry your full-size gun. Get the double under the armpit holsters, pocket carry one, 2 ankle holsters, and a mid-back holster. Of course you would not be able to sit down...Oh and the belt buckle derringer...You might get a little tired though, with carrying about 50 extra pounds on you.

AZ doesn't care how many you carry, as long as they are legal, AND, we allow carry of anything on the National Registry. Soooo, if you have a Beretta 93R with three round burst with proper paperwork, you may carry that concealed on your AZ CCW permit. We also don't specify firearm, so if you want, while you have that tax stamped 93R under your left arm, get that Cobray Serbu super shorty 12 gauge under the right, a set of throwing knives and Viking war axe under a car coat, and still 100% legal. The jury might look at you funny, but you won't be breaking the law!
 
Accessing your pocket carried weapons in a FUT kind of fight is going to be difficult at best. Body shape will have an impact on your ability to belt-carry anything, but I never had an issue with a 1911 IWB, even in FL or in the S. TX heat/humidity/wind.

The anouncement that you're in a fight for your life could very well be when you're knocked on your back or have Home Slice McSaggingbritches stick his pistol in your "sensitive" parts. Both of those will require some old fashioned fighting before they require some new fangled gun fighting.
 
If you feel safer with two guns and can carry them without impeding your ability to conduct yourself normally on a daily basis, more power to you.

He doesn't (especially considering that long barreled revolver would be sticking out his fly). That's some crazy liberal soccer mom's idea of how people carry guns. I swear the first time that kid tries to bend over for any reason those half dozen guns he has tucked into his waistband are going to come out onto the floor...
 
No reason not to carry 2 pocket guns ... but the odds are one will do.

I carry enough in my pockets - keys / phone / change / wallet / pocket knife ... etc :banghead:

I conceal carry for my own & my family's protection - very high odds are I wont actually need to draw and fight (thank God).

If there were no end to my concern / worry about zombies & BG's :eek:

Then why not carry 4 guns - one in each of my four pockets.

And one on each ankle .

And one under each arm.

and and - well you get my point.

But I know a guy that carries 2 guns and a combat knife and is a judo black belt.

Is he safer than me ... probably so :eek:
