I remember reading (Shooting Times, IIRC) about a man who was shot in the head with a .25 handgun. The bullet didn't penetrate the skull. It just zipped around the guy's skull underneath the skin. He was ok. Just had a really bad headache.

My Grandmother that was shot right between the eyebrows with a .22. She blew the bullet out of her nose some 20 years later.

Me, I'll pick something with a little more steam.

Actually, I could have gone all day without that mental image.

A good friend of mine was shot through the neck with a .25 during an
altercation at the local juke joint. The bullet went through from the side
without hitting anything vital. He has a small scar on the entrance side,
a very slightly larger scar on the exit side. He didn't know he had been
shot until he hit the guy and saw the gun hit the floor.

I owned a .25 long enough to put 2 boxes of shells through it. I've owned
an IJ TP-22 in .22 for years. Why would anyone choose a .25 over a .22?
Ammo cost alone would make me choose a .22. I own quite
a few large bore handguns, but sometimes you just want something to
drop in your back pocket.

I don't think my buddy would have faired as well if it had been a .22
hollow point that went through his neck. He would have at least heard it.

Obviously, I'd prefer a larger caliber. If you saw my friend (250 lb), you
would too. An eyeball is an awful small target.

Reliability of centerfire over rimfire. That IS why JMB invented the .25ACP, wasn't it? When you get that small, you just can't make rimfire as reliable. And when you're talking about a last-ditch BUG, when someone is on top of you, a "snap" instead of a "bang" means you've had it. The advantage of something like the little Beretta .25 is that you can reliably empty it of all nine rounds very, very quickly, giving you more chance to hit something important. It's not something you fire once.

You are aware that there have been Speer Gold Dot .25ACP hollowpoints for quite some time, aren't you? There's also Hornady Custom JHP, MagSafe +P , and Winchester Expanding Point.

If you're going to go that small, depending on penetration, I would think any of those would do more damage than a .22.

No reason not to be.
True story..
Local shyster represents slam hound in divorce action. Took his fee out in trade, got tired of the slut ,then decided to sue the husband for the fees. Husband warned him to back off. Shyster persisted. Shyster wound up with two .25ACP in the upper thorax and one in the beezer. Local prosecutor knows who was involved but the husband was at work, with witnesses, when the shyster was processed.
Never underestimate .25 ACP or an angry husband with friends.
